Is Vernon Gholston Actually Injured?

Scandal, pure speculation, and just something to mull over with your Monday morning coffee.
Is Vernon Gholston actually injured?
Over the past week or so, I have quietly been thinking this to myself. Only when I branched out and shared this idea did I realize that I was not alone in my superstition of the Jets franchise and the mysterious injury that Gholston acquired prior to the Jacksonville game.
If we think back to the Miami game (shudders), we will remember that Rex Ryan took a lot of heat post-performance for selecting Gholston ahead of a special teams player that maybe could've prevented one or both of the Ted Ginn touchdowns.
Prior to the game against Jacksonville, in talking with some Jaguars fans, I made the comment that I would not be surprised if some "injury" occurred to Gholston that would take the selection headache out of Ryan's hands.
The very next day we hear that Gholston had sustained a hamstring injury and that he was out for the game against Jacksonville, sustained ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Vernon Gholston, New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, Rex Ryan

Rex: Gholston out, Leonhard questionable

Hey guys, Rex Ryan just finished what may be his shortest press conference in his tenure as head coach. It wasn't because he was in a bad mood or anything. I think the media is all out of questions to ask him. Anyways, Ryan said LB Vernon Gholston (hamstring) is out. S Jim Leonhard (thumb) is questionable and may be a game-time decision on whether he can play with a cast on his broken thumb.

DE Shaun Ellis (knee) and WR Brad Smith (quad) and LB Bryan Thomas (toe) are all probable for the Patriots game.

Hey guys, filling in for Rich today. LB Vernon Gholston (hamstring) was on the side during the media portion of practice this morning. S Jim Leonhard, though, was practicing with a cast on his thumb. So we'll see what Rex Ryan says about the possibility of him playing on Sunday. I'll hit you guys up later.

Leonhard, Gholston sit

The Jets returned to work today, preparing for Sunday's must-win game (where have we heard that before?) at the Patriots.

Only two players missed practice: S Jim Leonhard (thumb surgery) and LB Vernon Gholston (hamstring). As Rex Ryan noted Monday, Leonhard is unlikely to play Sunday. From what I've been told, they may not know for sure how long he will be sidelined until late this week. Eric Smith will start in New England.

Smith, if you recall, played an integral role in the Week 2 upset of the Patriots. Used as an extra defensive back in sub packages, Smith blitzed Tom Brady a total of 17 times. All told, the Jets blitzed 33 times out of 47 pass plays, pressuring and/or hitting Brady 21 times.

It was the Jets' most dominant defensive performance of the season, but let's not forget, Brady still was rusty on his surgically repaired knee and WR Wes Welker didn't play.

Here's a refresher on the Jets' defensive strategy from that game, 16-9 win:

3-man rushes - 3 (2-for-3, 21 yards) ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Jets, Vernon Gholston, Jim Leonhard, Eric Smith

Gholston misses practice for third straight day

Hey guys, filling in for Rich, who will be on Daily News Live shortly on SNY. Rex Ryan just gave us the injury list update.

LB Vernon Gholston (hamstring) is very doubtful to play on Sunday. He did not practice for the third straight day.

WR Brad Smith (quad) and DL Shaun Ellis (knee) are listed as probable and are expected to play. Smith may even take over kick-returning duties for Justin Miller as well.

CB Lito Sheppard (quad) is also probable but will not start. CB Dwight Lowery will start instead. Ryan expects pretty much everyone but Gholston to be ready for Sunday.

* * *

Ryan says the team had an outstanding practice and that the Jets are "close." But he told the Jets he doesn't want to hear any excuses for why the team hasn't won more games.

"You can't have a good practice or a good game and then all of the sudden one or two plays, 'but if this doesn't happen or if that happen, we'd be 7-1 or whatever,'" Ryan said. "Fact is, those things have happened. We are tired of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Jets, Vernon Gholston

Vernon Gholston Was Mangini's Choice

Many Jets fans questioned the selection of Vernon Gholston ahead of Marques Murrell for the home tie against the Miami Dolphins. Well if we are being honest I didn't hear many objections until after the loss.
The logic of the questions was valid, why select a player who does very little on defence ahead of a player who does very little on defence but a lot on special teams. It made little sense before the game and even less sense after we saw Tedd Ginn return two kicks for touchdowns.
So now on top of being the most used target in Cleveland, the decision to draft Gholston seems to fall on the stone faced coach of the Browns, and former coach of the New York Jets, Eric Mangini.
I was always confident that Gholston would at some point turn the corner and show why he was drafted sixth overall in the 2008 draft. I thought that the scouts couldn't be as wrong as they were when they have picked up players like Revis/Harris and found later round stand outs like Washington and Cotchery.
Well it seems ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Jets, Vernon Gholston, Eric Mangini, Cleveland Browns

Gholston sits in practice

The Jets conducted their third post-bye practice today -- the first open to the media -- and guess who wasn't practicing? OLB Vernon Gholston was out for an undisclosed reason, presumably an injury. During the 40-minute window open to the media, Gholston spent his time on the stationary bike.

Interesting timing. The Jets are going to be facing some tough roster decisions this week, figuring out which players to dress. Considering the special-teams debacle against the Dolphins, a game in which they deactivated top special teamers Ahmad Carroll and Marrques Murrell, the Jets figure to place added emphasis on the kicking game for Sunday against the Jaguars.

Gholston isn't one of their top special teamers. That, coupled with his small role on defense, makes him a "bubble" guy. But now that he's injured ...

Say what you want about Gholston, but he has been a durable player in his short career. If I'm not mistaken, this could be his first injury.

Meanwhile, the Quadriceps Twins, WR Brad Smith ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Jets, Vernon Gholston, Miami Dolphins, Ahmad Carroll

So it has come to this for Vernon Gholston, the sixth pick of the 2008 draft: He's extra baggage. Opinions in the draft room were mixed on Gholston, but the Jets picked him because then-coach Eric Mangini lobbied hard.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Jets, Eric Mangini, Vernon Gholston
