Redskins/Jets: A Learning Experience

With the NFL preseason reaching it's mid-point, teams and players are being scrutinized more intensely than ever. On Saturday, the Washington Redskins defeated the New York Jets, 13-10, in the Redskins third preseason game, only the second for the Jets. There has been much made of what was statistically a poor performance from Redskins starting quarterback Jason Campbell and a spotty, at best, performance of the Redskins defense as a whole. Campbell completed only four passes in 10 attempts for 28 yards. But what may not be so obvious are the good decisions he made that led to those numbers. During the game and during a more detailed viewing later, it was apparent that Campbell was hesitant to make throws that he initially "read" as the "correct" throw to make. What was not so apparent was why. According to Redskins head coach Jim Zorn (also the team's play caller and architect of this version of the "West Coast Offense"), unfamiliarity played a large role in that hesitation. Is Colt Brennan the Future for the Washington Redskins

Since the start of preseason, I have tried (for the most part) to stay out of the Colt Brennan discussion. However, I can't resist any longer. It's hard to really pass judgment on a guy that has only played in three NFL preseason games, so I'm going try and avoid labeling him. So many people I have talked to are ready to crown him as the savior of DC, and it's way too early to even discuss him taking the No. 2 role. So basically, I just have to point out several things. From what I have seen thus far, Brennan is very raw. I think he has talent and a great arm, but come on people, let's face it, some of the throws he makes would never fly against first-team defenses. Now, I know he's a third stringer playing against third stringers, and it's good to see him dominate his peers. Unfortunately, many of his peers will be looking for work in a month, so his present success is rendered irrelevant. Should we care that he was burning Joe Schmo last week? No! Washington Redskins' Colt Brennan Gets Birthday Present From New York Jets

Saturday was the Washington Redskins' sixth round draft pick Colt Brennan's birthday. And the Jets gave him quite the present. What was it? First, they created the perfect scenario for him by being unable to complete enough passes and convert enough first downs to extend the Jets' lead beyond reach in the fourth quarter. With the game within reach, Brennan responded. Brennan first entered the game at the start of the fourth quarter. The Jets lead was one point, 7-6. Brennan's first drive was uneventful, three and out. Jets quarterback Brett Ratliff (signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jets last season) promptly marched his team downfield and added to their lead, setting up a Mike Nugent field goal. Brennan's second possession was only slightly more eventful than the first, but still ended with a punt. Rookie WR Malcolm Kelly was back on the field for the first time in three weeks or so, coming back from knee surgery. As suspected, the oft-injured linebacker was let go. He broke his hand early in camp and after hearing the news yesterday that Wallace would miss three more weeks with a dislocated shoudler, well, you could already smell the injury settlement. Broadway Brett Throws a TD in His First Game with New York Jets

The Brett Favre era continues, but in a different shade of green as the Jets faced off in preseason game Week Two against the Washington Redskins. Brett started off his first drive faced with a fourth and one and elected to go for it after talking with his offensive coordinator. And, it worked. By the time Favre was done with the first quarter, he threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Dustin Keller and it was his second series of the ball game. Favre said that “it worked out better than [he] thought it would, not that [he] thought it would go badly.” Favre would finish his say with 46 yards passing on five out of six throws. Backup QB Kellen Clemens went 5-for-12 with 63 yards passing, while third string QB Brett Ratliff was 13-for-19 with 146 yards on the day. The only other score came from two Mike Nugent field goals. Brett Favre Takes First Sack; Turns to Dust (Humor)

Today we mourn the loss of Brett Favre. He was 38 years old, and had just come out of retirement from professional football. Favre was playing a preseason game with the New York Jets against the Washington Redskins. The "Iron Man" of football took a sack on his first drive, and then turned to dust. He took the hit and tragically exploded. His wife was seen collecting the dust and putting it in a jar along with Favre's un-filed retirement papers and his round trip plane ticket(s) from Hattiesburg, MS to Green Bay, WI after the game. Our prayers go out to the Favre family on their undecided fate without Brett.

Thoughts and observations after reviewing the tape of last night’s game against the Redskins: • Brett Favre did what he had to do. Just like he said after the game, the balls he completed were plays that should’ve been completed. He did a nice job of handling the complexities of the offense. In 14 plays, there were five different personnel packages, with motion and/or shifts on six of the plays. Couldn’t help but notice that he used almost the entire play clock on several plays. In fact, his 19-yard pass to Jerricho Cotchery shouldn’t have counted. The play clock reached :00 a fraction before the ball was snapped. On his 4-yard TD pass to Dustin Keller, Favre looked first to Bubba Franks, who couldn’t get off the line. He quickly got off Franks and went to Keller. • Other than his fourth-down conversion, Thomas Jones was conspicuously quiet. That makes two games in a row. His totals: 6 carries for 18 yards. On Saturday night, the Brett Favre saga finally ended when the Hall of Fame bound QB made his New York Jets debut against the Washington Redskins at Giants Stadium. Favre, who was recently acquired by the team from Green Bay, received a standing ovation as he came out to take his first snap. His first start was short lived as he finished 5 of 6 with 48 yards and a TD. In his quick outing, he managed to move gang green down the field, effectively showing off his brilliance with every pass. While there were no vintage Favre bombs down the field. Jet fans can expect to see that rocket power as his snaps become less limited. The team would carry the 7-0 lead into the second quarter until the Redskins got on the board with a 30-yard field goal. Don't Drive Up Here (At Least Not Through Delaware)

Uggh, crazy long drive up here. Took 4-plus hours, leaving from my parent's house in Bmore. I can usually make that in 2 1/2. Delaware just killed everything. Crazy-long backups. But on the bright side I listened to WFAN (660) most of the way up and felt wamr and fuzzy all over listening to the good people of the NY Metropolitan area call in droves to rip the Yankees. Carlos Rogers was supposed to be out of football for over a year. Not so fast my friends! Rogers is returning tonight against the Jets only nine months after suffering a gruesome knee injury midway through last season. Rogers has been rehabbing furiously to get back in time for the start of the regular season. His comeback has moved along rapidly as he began participation in practice a few weeks ago and is now ready for some game action. Coaches were apprehensive of Rogers playing on the Meadowlands field turf surface, but now it appears that he is a go for tonight's game. Rogers, a 2005 first round draft pick, was coming into his own last season before injuring himself in a 52-7 loss to New England. He is expected to be one of the Skins' starting CBs this season and it's great to see him prepared to return. Another injured Redskins player is also set to see limited action tonight.
