Bugel: Rinehart 'deserved a chance'

The Cowboys begin a two-game homestand when they host the Redskins on Sunday. The Redskins come into Dallas riding high off their win against the Denver Broncos. Quarterback Jason Campbell is having a rough season as he's 168 for 254 for 1,870 yards with 10 TD's and eight interceptions. He's also been sacked 28 times this season. Campbell has been throwing the ball well but no one is catching it. Receiver Santana Moss is still producing with 35 receptions for 508 yards and two TDs, but second year receivers Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas haven't produced as they've been expected to. Kelly and Thomas have played in every game this season but have just nine receptions each and have 203 yards combined. After word emerged about the locker-room altercation earlier this season between running back Clinton Portis and fullback Mike Sellers, some Redskins fans criticized Sellers's blocking on Internet message boards and sports-talk radio shows. "We didn't change the run game necessarily to accommodate Ladell [Betts]. We ran our stuff," Coach Jim Zorn said. "And what he did was push up into the hole, and ran through and fought for yardage." Rogers says he doesn't expect to be on bench

Benched after giving up a long touchdown pass early in the Redskins' game against Denver, cornerback Carlos Rogers hopes to play Sunday in Cowboys Stadium, Rogers said before practice today at Redskins Park. "I don't think I'll just be strictly benched," he said. "May come off the bench. Not saying that's what the case is; I don't know. I don't expect to be on the bench." In the first quarter of Washington's 27-17 victory over the Broncos at FedEx Field, Denver quarterback Kyle Orton and wide receiver Brandon Marshall combined on 40- and 75-yard touchdown passes. Marshall, who was wide open by several yards on both scoring plays, beat Rogers on a double-move for the first touchdown.

Why Clinton Portis Shouldn't Rush Back

Clinton Portis is a competitor and probably wants to get back out on the field as quickly as possible—especially after watching Ladell Betts run all over the Denver Broncos this past Sunday. However, I would caution him not to. A concussion is nothing to sneeze at, and unless Portis would want to have his career cut short like Steve Young or Troy Aikman, he shouldn't rush back. Aside from not having a premature exit from the league, the Redskins aren't going anywhere this season. To even sniff the playoffs they'd have to run the table, and with two games against Dallas and one left with the Giants, Eagles, and Chargers, I just don't see a 7-0 stretch on the horizon. I could be wrong though. It has happened before. Remember the Steelers and their wild card berth? Furthermore, Betts is running the ball well. State of Washington Bans Sport of Football (Satire)

In a move that some have felt is a long time coming, Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire has announced an official ban on the sport of football. Citing the violent nature of the sport, Gregoire said that she,"Did not feel that the sport of football accurately represented the peaceful citizens of Washington State." Despite having a strong history, dating back to the 1890's, there has been a strong behind-the-scenes movement to destroy support for the sport. Gregoire elaborated by commenting,"It has been a long process that has gone on through a couple of decades. The first seeds were planted when the governors office convinced the regents at the University of Washington to hire athletic director Barbara Hedges, who fully supported the more graceful sports our Colleges have to offer." Smith is NFC special teams player of week

Redskins punter/touchdown passer and scorer Hunter Smith has been named NFC special teams player of the week, the NFL has announced. Smith, in case you've forgotten, threw the first pass of his career and hit Mike Sellers for a 35-yard TD on a fake field-goal attempt (he is the holder for Shaun Suisham) in the Redskins' 27-17 victory over Denver on Sunday. He also scored on an 8-yard TD run against the Giants in the season opener and is the first special-teams player in NFL history to rush and pass for a TD in a single season. Smith punted four times for a 38-yard net average against the Broncos. He previously was named AFC special teams player of the week when he played for Indianapolis in 2005.

Mother (at least Haynesworth's) knows best

Albert Haynesworth's mother, Linda, has held many jobs and at the moment is a semi-retired truck driver. She said she has no plans to become a motivational speaker, but she apparently had a positive affect on the Redskins last week. Linda gave a pep talk to members of the organization, including Coach Jim Zorn, encouraging them to be positive and "just go out have fun." She told them if they did, "it'll be okay." Well, the Redskins ended a losing streak at four games with a 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos at FedEx Field. Not surprisingly, Linda was pleased. "Very pleased," she said. The Case for Ladell Betts Getting More Playing Time

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Clinton Portis, but after watching the Washington Redskins defeat the Denver Broncos, I came to a conclusion. Ladell Betts runs the ball like it's his last game in the National Football League. Because he isn't the starter and has seemed to get few touches over the past two seasons, Betts tries to get the most out of every yard. He made several plays, including the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, because of his second and third efforts. Despite being two years older and having the same number of years in the league as Portis, Betts has take far less a beating. At this point in both of their careers, Betts's legs just seem to be fresher. Compound that and the fact that Clinton tip-toes and puts so much of his weight forward while running through holes that the slightest nudge seems to send him tumbling to the ground. Betts, on the other hand, runs more squarely and explodes through the hole. He is able to break tackles and bounce of hits that ...

Zorn, Portis on the RB issue and other matters

Clinton Portis addressed his health and the Redskins' running back situation on ESPN980's "John Thompson Show" this afternoon and, as usual, Dan Steinberg was listening. He has the whole report at DC SportsBog, but here's a recap. Portis said he doesn't find the situation at all awkward and thinks the ideal solution would be for him and Ladell Betts to supply a 1-2 punch. "It don't put me in an awkward situation at all," Portis said, when asked about Betts's breakout week, "Because I think I'll put myself up against anybody in the NFL [on] any day of the week. I think Ladell is a great guy, I think he's a great player, I think he's a great teammate for what he gives on the field. You never hear anything from him, he just goes out and [plays] hard and gives you everything he's got, so he deserves an opportunity.
