Rogers praised for response to benching

Coach Jim Zorn praised cornerback Carlos Rogers for responding well in practice this week after having been benched early in the Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos, but Zorn would not commit to Rogers starting opposite top cornerback DeAngelo Hall on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium. "He could" start, Zorn said. "But right now, we've got a little mix going and we like what we're seeing out there. I like what I'm seeing in Carlos and how he's responding to the situation. "Sometimes it happens where you've just got to bide your time and wait for your next opportunity. I know with Carlos it'll come. And I think he knows it'll come as well." Secondary coach Jerry Gray has been similarly impressed with Rogers's approach this week. "He's responded great. He understands what he has to do and it's nothing new," Gray said. "The

Bugel: Rinehart 'deserved a chance'

Benched after briefly starting at right guard earlier in the season, second-year guard Chad Rinehart remained focused and continued to work hard, and offensive line coach Joe Bugel noticed. Bugel convinced Coach Jim Zorn that Rinehart should be given another opportunity to work with the first team, and the former third-round draft pick responded well during the Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos at FedEx Field. Rinehart is scheduled to make his first career start (fourth overall) Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium, and he has earned it, Bugel said. "I felt during that time where he wasn't a starter, watching him on the scout team servicing the defense, he was doing a heck of a job," Bugel said. "He was staying extra practice, getting in some work, and it came to the time where the kid deserved a chance. You know what I mean?

Haynesworth a game-time decision for Sunday

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) will be listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice at Redskins Park. "Albert was on the treadmill today working," Zorn said. "It'll be a game-time decision whether he can go or not. I'm going to lean more toward having him up [active], seeing what he can do. "I'm an optimistic person and I'm definitely going to wish that for myself with Albert because we'd love to have him on the field. But it will be a game-time situation."

Orton sits out practice; game-time call for Broncos

Kyle Orton missed a third consecutive practice Friday with a sprained left ankle.

Coach Josh McDaniels says the Denver Broncos quarterback's availability for Sunday's pivotal contest with San Diego will come down to a game-time decision.

Backup Chris Simms again took first-team practice repetitions, as he has all week in the absence of Orton, who was injured during last week's 27-17 loss at Washington.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos, Josh McDaniels, San Diego Chargers, Chris Simms, Washington Redskins

Week 11: Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys begin a two-game homestand when they host the Redskins on Sunday.
The Redskins come into Dallas riding high off their win against the Denver Broncos. Quarterback Jason Campbell is having a rough season as he's 168 for 254 for 1,870 yards with 10 TD's and eight interceptions. He's also been sacked 28 times this season. Campbell has been throwing the ball well but no one is catching it.
Receiver Santana Moss is still producing with 35 receptions for 508 yards and two TDs, but second year receivers Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas haven't produced as they've been expected to. Kelly and Thomas have played in every game this season but have just nine receptions each and have 203 yards combined. Running backs Ladell Betts and Mike Sellers have more receptions then Kelly and Thomas.
The running game has also been mediocre for the Redskins. Clinton Portis is the leading back for the Redskins, but missed last week's game against the Broncos with a concussion and is out for this game.
Defense prepares for Cowboys' attack

The Redskins gave up 40- and 75-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter of their Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos. Obviously, the defense must do a better job Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium. "Well the big plays come from [Dallas quarterback] Tony Romo," secondary coach Jerry Gray said. "He scrambles a lot, and does a lot of things to get guys open, and receivers are always working down the field. You see Miles Austin, all of the sudden he comes up with a 200-yard game because he works after the catch. It's not just, 'I'm going to beat you.' He actually works to get open, and he does a great job. That's really what you want to do when you've got a wide receiver like that." The Redskins' defense ranks No. 1 against the pass, giving up an average of 162.7 yards and

Washington Redskins: Time To Bench Clinton Portis?

In the wake of Ladell Betts' 114-yard performance against Denver, this question has arisen: Has he surpassed Clinton Portis as the team's best running back?

While it may be too early to give a definitive answer to that question, the results speak for themselves (for at least one game). The Washington Redskins put on their best offensive performance of the year versus the Broncos.

Jason Campbell was not prolific, but he was efficient enough in the passing game to allow Washington to win. Denver was not able to apply constant pressure, because the Skins' running game was churning out yards.

For the first time in 2009, the Redskins had a 100+ yard rusher.

Anyone who has watched Washington play this year would have to admit that Clinton Portis has been hesitant at times. He has also appeared slower, and unable to break off the long runs like he once did earlier in his career.

Ladell Betts, on the other hand, looked fresh against the Broncos. He ran with power, forced missed ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Clinton Portis, Denver Broncos, Ladell Betts, Jason Campbell

This year, Romo will see a new pass rush

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has taken a lot of heat for his poor performance late in the season and during the playoffs. But Romo sure knows how to extend plays, Coach Jim Zorn said. "It is just awful to have to cover longer than you really want to," Zorn said. "We've got to try to get to him and make him be concerned about" the pass rush. poll by twiigs.com The Redskins (3-6) are last in the NFC East and the Cowboys (6-3) are atop the division. For the Redskins to pull closer to the Cowboys, they must corral Romo in the pocket and end passing plays quickly. "When he extends, when he moves around, when he flinches the ball, it causes the secondary, the linebackers, to hesitate, to go, to move," Zorn said. "And then if he can pull it down and have time to hit somebody else,

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis will miss his second straight game as he recovers from a concussion.

Coach Jim Zorn on Thursday ruled Portis out for Sunday's game at Dallas.

Portis has not been able to practice since he was injured in a helmet-to-helmet hit against Atlanta.

Ladell Betts is set to start for Portis for the second consecutive week.

Zorn says defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth remains a game-time decision with a sprained left ankle.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Clinton Portis, Jim Zorn, Washington Redskins, Ladell Betts, Albert Haynesworth, Dallas Cowboys

Portis ruled out; Haynesworth a gameday decision

Running back Clinton Portis (concussion) was officially ruled out of Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, but he might accompany the team on the trip, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice. "Clinton is going to continue to be monitored, he's going to continue to be checked, but we're not going to play him this week," Zorn said. Portis suffered a concussion early in a 31-17 loss in Week 9 to the Atlanta Falcons and sat out Washington's 27-17 victory in Week 10 over the Denver Broncos. Portis's vision "is just a little bit blurry," Zorn said. "It's just foggy enough for me to not trust. I want to see him practice.

Sellers prefers to let actions speak for him

After word emerged about the locker-room altercation earlier this season between running back Clinton Portis and fullback Mike Sellers, some Redskins fans criticized Sellers's blocking on Internet message boards and sports-talk radio shows. During a 16-13 victory in Week 4 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Portis went to coaches in an effort to have Sellers demoted for what Portis deemed to be poor blocking. Apparently in siding with Portis, fans criticized Sellers for the team's unproductive running game to start the season, believing Portis would have been more effective if Sellers had blocked better. But many in the organization told me Sellers's blocking was not what had derailed the running game. Portis was not in top form to start the season and his lackadaisical attitude toward practice did not help. After watching Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright gain chunks of yards since Portis has been sidelined with a concussion, I

Fletcher, defense work to stop Romo, big plays

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo often has succeeded at eluding pass rushers in the pocket. His ability to move well and give receivers more time to break free from coverage has resulted in many big plays for the Cowboys in Romo's four seasons as a starter. "He is a tough quarterback. He has great pocket awareness," middle linebacker London Fletcher said. "He has a great ability to extend plays, to buy time. He knows how to get everything out of a play. He's good at that." Although Romo struggled against pressure in the Cowboys' 17-7 loss in Week 10 to the Green Bay Packers, he is capable of making things happen even against an effective pass rush, players said. And the Cowboys have made players capable of helping Romo produce long gains. Also, the Redskins gave up 40- and 75-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter of their 27-17 victory

Leon predicts speedy recovery

An upbeat Leon Washington, four weeks removed from his gruesome leg injury, said today that he’s ahead of schedule and hopes to rejoin his teammates next March for the start of the off-season conditioning program.

“My goal is, which I’m very optimistic about, is to get back in March for initial training,” said Washington, speaking to the New York media for the first time since his injury in Oakland. “I want to be moving around pretty good. I want to be able to work out with the guys … I’m very optimistic about that. I have faith about it. I look forward to it. The way I’m moving right now, I’m right on target.”

Washington suffered a rare injury _ a double open fracture in his right leg. He broke the tibia and fibular bones, which pierced the skin. For the interview, he sat in a chair, with his lower leg encased in a walking boot. He’s getting around on crutches.

Washington, in the final year of his contract, said he has ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Jets, Washington Redskins, Leon Washington

Orakpo, defense learn from Cowboys' game

The Green Bay Packers had five sacks and pressured quarterback Tony Romo throughout their 17-7 victory last week over the Dallas Cowboys. Redskins defensive end Andre Carter has eight sacks, rookie defensive end/strong-side linebacker Brian Orakpo has seven and Cowboys starting right tackle Marc Colombo is sidelined for the remainder of the season because of a broken left fibula. Romo has been sacked 22 times overall, third-year tackle Doug Free will make his first career start Sunday against the Redskins at Cowboys Stadium and Washington's improved pass rush has provided reason for optimism in a battle of NFC East rivals, players said. "We feel like our pass rush has been definitely a strength for us this season, especially lately," middle linebacker London Fletcher said. "Andre and Brian have been able to create a lot of pressure on the quarterback and also been able to get some sacks. The back end,

In what has been a down decade and half for Redskins fans, I thought it would be appropriate to reflect on the history of the organization. With three Vince Lombardi trophies proudly displayed at Redskins Park in Ashburn, Virginia, this once proud organization needs to reflect back to a time that left us in a state of sheer unadulterated euphoria (as the late Jack Kent Cooke once emphatically described his emotions toward this team’s success). Over the next ten slides I will provide my 10 "Greatest Moments in Redskins History" and would welcome your suggestions to add to the list.
Haynesworth, Gurode say incident is history

When the Redskins signed Albert Haynesworth, you knew there'd be a whole new wrinkle to Dallas Week, thanks to that 2006 incident in which Haynesworth, playing for Tennessee, stomped on Andre Gurode. Haynesworth discussed that incident as well as others involving anger management with Jason Reid and, last winter, told him: "There was nothing I could do but just take responsibility for it, take a look at myself and just try to be" a better person, Haynesworth said. "Talking about it [with a counselor] really gave me a chance to open up. I look back at it and . . . it's almost like I wasn't the one doing it. It was all in, like, slow motion. I don't even remember a lot of what happened. But it was me. I did it, and it's hard to accept that you did something like that. It was just a really hard

For Betts, what happens after contact is key

Ladell Betts is a "low-maintainence" back. He practices hard, eagerly approaches whatever running play is called and always runs hard. "We didn't change the run game necessarily to accommodate Ladell [Betts]. We ran our stuff," Coach Jim Zorn said. "And what he did was push up into the hole, and ran through and fought for yardage." And he gained yards after being hit, which is key for a successful rushing attack, Zorn said. "Some of the 114-yard game he had -- I don't know how many yards were after contact -- but he had some after-contact yards," Zorn said. "That's a huge issue for him, and he worked it and so did Rock [Cartwright]. They worked extra to get that extra yardage, and that kept those chains moving for us." With the Redskins (3-6) facing the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys (6-3), they must continue to keep the running game going,

Byron Westbrook concerned for brother's health

Redskins cornerback Byron Westbrook said he is concerned for the career of his older brother Brian, the star running back for the Philadelphia Eagles who suffered his second concussion of the season Sunday. Brian Westbrook suffered his first concussion Oct. 26 against Washington at FedEx Field, and Byron Westbrook stood over him as doctors evaluated the situation. Brian sat out for two weeks and returned Sunday against San Diego, but he suffered another concussion. Now, the rest of his season -- and perhaps his career -- are in jeopardy. "Outside of football, I just want to make sure he's healthy," Brian Westbrook said. "That's still my big brother, and I still care for him and all. I want to make sure that he's fine with the fact that he might need to sit out a couple games, and hopefully that he doesn't end his career on something like this. It's

Zorn says Portis 'very doubtful' to play

Coach Jim Zorn stopped short of ruling Clinton Portis out for Sunday's game at Dallas, but he said the Redskins' star running back is "very doubtful" to play. "But I don't want to count him out," Zorn said Wednesday after practice. Portis wasn't present at practice and is at risk of missing his second game since suffering a concussion - the second of his career -- on Nov. 8 in Atlanta. Zorn said Portis worked out early Wednesday morning -- to get "a little sweat going," Zorn said -- and Portis experienced some blurriness. Portis attended the weekly team meeting but left Redskins Park to visit a Washington doctor and missed the running backs' position meeting. Zorn laid out a timeline that makes it seem very doubtful Portis will be ready for action against the Cowboys. Even if he stops experiencing symptoms, coaches want to wait a full 24 hours and retest

Campbell: A big game in Big D

Quarterback Jason Campbell had one of the best games in his career last season while leading the Redskins to a 26-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium. Campbell completed 20 of 31 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He had a 108.4 passer rating while leading the Redskins to only their second victory in the last 13 games in Texas. The Redskins on Sunday make their first appearance and the new Cowboys Stadium, and Campbell is eager to face the NFC East leaders again. "It's a big game," Campbell said. "First and foremost, it's an NFC game. We're on the road, we're already behind in the conference. For us, each game is a playoff game for us, from this point on to the rest of the season. So every game is magnitude at the highest level you can get." Although the Cowboys (6-3) are

Hunter the punter is man of the moment

Obviously, punter Hunter Smith doesn't play one of the league's glamour positions, but he's becoming quite the special-teams star in his 11th NFL season. Smith was selected the NFC special teams player of the week after throwing a 35-yard touchdown pass to fullback Mike Sellers off a faked field goal in a 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos. Guess who's pumped up? "It's absolutely an honor," said Smith, who was encircled by reporters and television cameras while standing in front of his locker. "My position doesn't get a tremendous amount of accolades, recognition or really anything like that. ... The whole thing is just a real nice surprise. It's very different. I'm not real sure what to do with all that's come from it. It's nice." Smith, who rushed for a touchdown in the season-opening loss to the New York Giants, is the first specialist in NFL history to rush

Rogers says he doesn't expect to be on bench

Benched after giving up a long touchdown pass early in the Redskins' game against Denver, cornerback Carlos Rogers hopes to play Sunday in Cowboys Stadium, Rogers said before practice today at Redskins Park. "I don't think I'll just be strictly benched," he said. "May come off the bench. Not saying that's what the case is; I don't know. I don't expect to be on the bench." In the first quarter of Washington's 27-17 victory over the Broncos at FedEx Field, Denver quarterback Kyle Orton and wide receiver Brandon Marshall combined on 40- and 75-yard touchdown passes. Marshall, who was wide open by several yards on both scoring plays, beat Rogers on a double-move for the first touchdown.

Why Clinton Portis Shouldn't Rush Back

Clinton Portis is a competitor and probably wants to get back out on the field as quickly as possible—especially after watching Ladell Betts run all over the Denver Broncos this past Sunday.
However, I would caution him not to.
A concussion is nothing to sneeze at, and unless Portis would want to have his career cut short like Steve Young or Troy Aikman, he shouldn't rush back.
Aside from not having a premature exit from the league, the Redskins aren't going anywhere this season. To even sniff the playoffs they'd have to run the table, and with two games against Dallas and one left with the Giants, Eagles, and Chargers, I just don't see a 7-0 stretch on the horizon. I could be wrong though. It has happened before. Remember the Steelers and their wild card berth?
Furthermore, Betts is running the ball well. He's exploding through holes and running like it's his last chance in the league.
It may sound weird, but I'd tell Portis to take the rest of the season off. Show up for practice for ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Clinton Portis, Washington Redskins

State of Washington Bans Sport of Football (Satire)

In a move that some have felt is a long time coming, Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire has announced an official ban on the sport of football.
Citing the violent nature of the sport, Gregoire said that she,"Did not feel that the sport of football accurately represented the peaceful citizens of Washington State." Despite having a strong history, dating back to the 1890's, there has been a strong behind-the-scenes movement to destroy support for the sport. Gregoire elaborated by commenting,"It has been a long process that has gone on through a couple of decades. The first seeds were planted when the governors office convinced the regents at the University of Washington to hire athletic director Barbara Hedges, who fully supported the more graceful sports our Colleges have to offer." Hedges work in this endeavor is roundly praised by proponents of the ban. "Forcing successful football coach Don James to quit? BRILLIANT! The hires after that were not immediately obvious to the outside ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins

Smith is NFC special teams player of week

Redskins punter/touchdown passer and scorer Hunter Smith has been named NFC special teams player of the week, the NFL has announced. Smith, in case you've forgotten, threw the first pass of his career and hit Mike Sellers for a 35-yard TD on a fake field-goal attempt (he is the holder for Shaun Suisham) in the Redskins' 27-17 victory over Denver on Sunday. He also scored on an 8-yard TD run against the Giants in the season opener and is the first special-teams player in NFL history to rush and pass for a TD in a single season. Smith punted four times for a 38-yard net average against the Broncos. He previously was named AFC special teams player of the week when he played for Indianapolis in 2005.

Mother (at least Haynesworth's) knows best

Albert Haynesworth's mother, Linda, has held many jobs and at the moment is a semi-retired truck driver. She said she has no plans to become a motivational speaker, but she apparently had a positive affect on the Redskins last week. Linda gave a pep talk to members of the organization, including Coach Jim Zorn, encouraging them to be positive and "just go out have fun." She told them if they did, "it'll be okay." Well, the Redskins ended a losing streak at four games with a 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos at FedEx Field. Not surprisingly, Linda was pleased. "Very pleased," she said. "Those guys had so much pressure on them. That's why you need to have a short-term memory. You have to just go out there and have fun. "If you make a mistake, you just move on. Don't worry about what other people are saying. Just go

The Case for Ladell Betts Getting More Playing Time

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Clinton Portis, but after watching the Washington Redskins defeat the Denver Broncos, I came to a conclusion.
Ladell Betts runs the ball like it's his last game in the National Football League.
Because he isn't the starter and has seemed to get few touches over the past two seasons, Betts tries to get the most out of every yard. He made several plays, including the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, because of his second and third efforts.
Despite being two years older and having the same number of years in the league as Portis, Betts has take far less a beating. At this point in both of their careers, Betts's legs just seem to be fresher.
Compound that and the fact that Clinton tip-toes and puts so much of his weight forward while running through holes that the slightest nudge seems to send him tumbling to the ground.
Betts, on the other hand, runs more squarely and explodes through the hole. He is able to break tackles and bounce of hits that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Ladell Betts, Clinton Portis, Washington Redskins

Here's What Happened / Here's What I Think

The end of a long losing streak, the best offensive performance of the season and another bad experience for cornerback Carlos Rogers -- the Redskins sure keep things interesting. It all has me fired up for another installment of Here's What Happened/Here's What I Think. Here's what happened: During his regular weekly spot today on ESPN 980's "The John Thompson Show," top running back Clinton Portis - who sat out Sunday's 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos after suffering a concussion a week earlier - said he's going to "play it safe, and I've got to do what's best for me." Portis also revealed his vision still is "blurry" and his head feels "heavy" at times. Here's what I think: Portis sure didn't sound like a guy who plans to be in the lineup Sunday against Dallas at the new Cowboys Stadium. Philadelphia Eagles all-pro running back Brian Westbrook has

Zorn, Portis on the RB issue and other matters

Clinton Portis addressed his health and the Redskins' running back situation on ESPN980's "John Thompson Show" this afternoon and, as usual, Dan Steinberg was listening. He has the whole report at DC SportsBog, but here's a recap. Portis said he doesn't find the situation at all awkward and thinks the ideal solution would be for him and Ladell Betts to supply a 1-2 punch. "It don't put me in an awkward situation at all," Portis said, when asked about Betts's breakout week, "Because I think I'll put myself up against anybody in the NFL [on] any day of the week. I think Ladell is a great guy, I think he's a great player, I think he's a great teammate for what he gives on the field. You never hear anything from him, he just goes out and [plays] hard and gives you everything he's got, so he deserves an opportunity.
