Kings-Caps: Los Angeles Rules Washington, 5-2

The Kings ruled the ice and shut down the Caps 5-2, and in the process stopped Ovechkin's goal scoring streak at five straight games.
The Kings are one of only three NHL teams against which Alex Ovechkin has not scored a goal. The Capitals face the other two—San Jose and Minnesota—in their next two games. Nicklas Backstrom lived up to his NHL Star of the Week hype and scored first for the Caps on a power-play goal. Backstrom has scored a goal in four of his past five games after a season-opening 14-game drought. The Caps' only other goal was made by Brooks Laich, his fifth of the season. Brent Johnson got a workout tonight as L.A. out-shot Washington 33-21. The Caps were missing key players including their leading scorer. Alexander Semin missed his third consecutive game because of an undisclosed upper body injury, Sergi Federov missed his seventh straight due to a sprained ankle, and Mike Green missed his first game after being checked hard into the boards by Anaheim's ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin

Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin: Which Is a More Valuable Asset?

I've debated or have at least mentioned in some previous posts who I believe to really be the better of the two between Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, but in case people haven't read those previous articles, here it goes again.
Alex Ovechkin is the more superior player between the two, and here is why.
First thing, if I asked you who is the better player between Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin, majority of people will say Ovechkin, but if I asked you who is better between Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, then there's a debate. But as of right now, and since midseason last year, Malkin is the superior player to Crosby.
I was glad to finally see someone in the NHL say something over the hype surrounding Sidney Crosby. Now, some people could argue that they're jealous, but believe me, in no way is Alexander Semin jealous of Sidney Crosby.
Don't get me wrong, it's great what the NHL has done is promoting Sidney Crosby and broadening the NHL. Yet, the NHL has so many stars to offer than just Sidney ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, Alexander Semin

Capitals-Ducks: Washington Defeats Not-So-Mighty Anaheim

Reigning NHL MVP and current NHL second star of the week, Alexander Ovechkin, extended his goal streak to five games and added three assists to help the Caps beat the Anaheim Ducks, 6-4.
Tomas Fleischmann and Mike Green scored less than two minutes apart early in the first period with the man advantage. Nicklas Backstrom, Matt Bradley, and David Steckel also scored, and Michael Nylander had two assists for the Capitals.
The Ducks have allowed more than one power-play goal in eight of their first 20 games. The Caps went three-for-eight on the power play while winning for the sixth time in seven games.
Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger's shoulder check smacked Mike Green into the end boards late in the first period. Green missed his next few shifts and did not return to the game. According to Washington Post Insider , Green was wearing a shoulder sling after the game and sounds like he will have it looked at in the morning. Apparently, Green was looking forward to this game because he is a big ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, Mike Green, Alexander Ovechkin

Game 16 Review: Jose, Jose, Jose....

 THE CAPS WIN!
The Washington Capitals handed the New Jersey Devils their fourth straight loss. The RED HOT Caps beat the Devils 3-1 with Jose Theodore protecting the net in his first start in nearly two weeks.
Jose had a great night and the only puck to get by him against his 32 saves was a late breakaway goal in the third period. Alexander Semin left the game late in the second period with an undisclosed injury. The team said his status is day-to-day.
 SCORING:
The Caps scored first and led all night. Brooks Laich scored his fourth goal with a power play tip-in goal in the first period assisted by Ovechkin and Green.
The last three goals of the night were the fifth goal of the season for each player. Thomas Fleischmann scored with a snap shot goal assisted by Kozlov and Green in the second period.
The other two goals came in the third period with the first of the two by the Devils with a wrist shot goal by Patrik Elias assisted by Gionta and Oduya. The Caps closed out the night ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Jose Theodore, Alexander Ovechkin, Patrik Elias

Backstrom First Star, Ovechkin Second

I'm told Nicklas Backstrom has been named the NHL's first star of the week. In four games, Backstrom had two goals and nine assists to help the Capitals go 3-0-1. Backstrom's linemate, Alex Ovechkin, meantime, was named second star of the week. He had five goals in four games. I'll link to the league's release when it comes out....Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Bäckström

Alexander Ovechkin Back in Form, Ottawa Senators Can't Weather the Storm

Injuries, injuries, injuries. They seem to just keep piling up on my fantasy hockey roster.
Paul Kariya didn't make his return this week like he was expected to. I've already lost Martin Brodeur and Sergei Gonchar. This is just salt in the wound.
What's worse is I may have lost my head-to-head this week because I played Brian Boucher today. He got the victory, but the five goals against don't help matters.
We'll see tomorrow.

 Hot
He's back, folks. Alexander Ovechkin has begun to play like he's supposed to. The Great Eight racked up 10 points in four games this week. More importantly, five goals were scored during that time. These are the numbers we're accustomed to seeing from him.
If Ovechkin is scoring, Nicklas Backstrom is racking up the assists. The Swede scored twice this week to go along with nine assists. His five-point effort in New Jersey was one to remember, too.
Simon Gagne just seems to play better and better as the season progresses. The 28-year-old has been ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Alexander Ovechkin, Ottawa Senators

Ovechkin's Late Heroics

It wasn't their best effort. In fact, as I wrote this in this morning's Post, the Caps probably didn't deserve anything from last night's 6-5 shootout loss in Newark. But Alex Ovechkin's goal (thanks to a ridiculous pass from Nicklas Backstrom) with about a second remaining is definitely worthy of its own post. If you haven't seen it yet, click on the video below. My favorite part is the reaction of the Devils on the...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals, Nicklas Bäckström, New Jersey Devils

The Capitals saw their five-game winning streak come to an end, but thanks to a last-second goal by Alex Ovechkin they were able to earn a point in their seventh-straight game. Washington only has one regulation loss in eight games this November and has claimed points in nine of its past 10 games. "We had no business getting a point there but you take them and you look for positives," Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "OK,...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin, Bruce Boudreau, New Jersey Devils

Led by their top line of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin, who were on the ice for each of the Capitals goals, Washington put together its most dominant performance of the season in a convincing 5-1 win over Carolina to claim sole ownership of the Southeast Division lead. Semin's two goals and three assists gave him the league scoring lead with 27 points, pushing him ahead of Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin. *For Carolina, the...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Washington Capitals, Alexander Semin, Carolina Hurricanes, Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Bäckström, Evgeni Malkin

Just how dominant was the Alexander Ovechkin-Nicklas Backstrom-Alexander Semin line tonight? Well, they were on the ice for all five goals in the Caps' 5-1 victory over the 'Canes, which gave Washington sole possession of first place in the Southeast Division. Consider these stats: Semin -- 2 goals, 3 assists, plus-4, 2 shots on goal. (Now that's efficient). Ovechkin -- 1 goal, 2 assists, plus-4, 5 shots on goal.
Capitals-Hurricanes: Washington Dominates Division Rival

The Washington Capitals dominated the Carolina Hurricanes, their Southeast Division rival, in every facet of the game—finally putting together another "60 minute game", as Caps' coach Bruce Boudreau is often fond of saying.
League leading scorer Alexander Semin had a five-point night (two goals, three assists), and the line of Semin, Ovechkin, and Backstrom were on the ice for all five goals. The Caps (9-4-2-20) pushed past the Hurricanes 5-1 for first place in the division, and now lead the Southeast by two points. The first-line trio was unstoppable, as Ovechkin had a goal and two assists and center Nicklas Backstrom netted his first goal of the season and added three helpers in his breakout game. There was a negative, however, amidst all the offensive fireworks. Goalie Brent Johnson, last week's No. 3 star of the week in the NHL, left after the first period with a hip injury. He injured his hip making a stop in the final seconds of the period, killing off a Carolina five-on-three power ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin

Alex Ovechkin, Capitals Start Hot, Beat Olaf Kolzig, Lightning 4-2

Brent Johnson made 34 saves, Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist, and the Washington Capitals defeated Olaf Kolzig and the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 before an announced 17,932 at Verizon Center. Washington is now 6-0-1 at home in the 2008-09 campaign.
Kolzig received a warm reception from the fans during the player introductions, the National Anthem, and in a video tribute in the first television timeout. But, his former teammates treated him rudely, scoring on their first two shots of the game, though neither could really be attributed to the veteran goalie.
"After the game, I told the guys, 'Why try when you are down 3-0? Why do it then?"' Lightning coach Barry Melrose said "It was very disappointing to play like that in front of Olie in Washington."
"Probably the biggest game he's played in years and they show up and do that for him. Those guys should all be hiding their eyes when they walk by Olie Kolzig tonight."
Tampa Bay played poorly in the first period and the Caps were definitely ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin, Olaf Kolzig

Caps spoil Kolzig's return to Washington (AP)

Olie Kolzig got a warm welcome from the crowd in his return to Washington. His former teammates weren't so accommodating. Tom Poti, Mike Green and Eric Fehr scored in the first period, Alex Ovechkin added his first goal in 10 games and the Washington Capitals beat Kolzig and the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 on Monday night.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Washington Capitals, Tom Poti, Mike Green, Eric Fehr, Alexander Ovechkin, Tampa Bay Lightning

Eye for an Eye: NHL Needs Harsher Suspensions

Picture this if you will:
Alexander Ovechkin is on a tear in his division, and his team has two regular season games left. The Capitals are playing another conference team that they will be meeting in the first round of the playoffs.
Ovechkin hops onto the ice in the third period with his team up by four goals.
Seconds later a late season call-up jumps onto the ice. We'll call this player "Meat-head."
The play begins and transitions into the Capital's defensive zone.
Ovechkin thunders into the corner to retrieve a puck. Meanwhile his right-side vision is partially screened by one of his own players.
Unknown to Ovechkin, "Meat-head" is flying in towards him at a wicked speed, using Alex's teammate as a screen.
Seconds later, Ovechkin is laying flat-out on the ice enjoying a dream about some Swedish babe he got lucky with during a canoe trip two summers ago.
Ten minutes later, he's startled awake by two loud clapping hands and the words "Alex, can you hear me?"
The next day the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Gary Bettman, Alexander Ovechkin

Alexander Semin Walking the Walk and Now Talking the Talk

The Washington Capitals still have an Alexander the Great. Instead of Ovechkin, the last name reads Semin currently. He emerged into the NHL scene during the 2003-2004 season, scoring 10 goals and assisting on 12 in 52 games played.
I didn't notice Semin that year. It was the last year before the lockout and Ovechkin wasn't on the roster yet. In other words, the Capitals were the lowest of the low, and attention was hard to come by for them.
The talented young Russian could have played in the post-lockout season, but there were some road bumps.
There was some confusion about Semin's obligations to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. It requires all Russian men to serve two years, but it allows soldiers who are hockey players to play for professional hockey teams in Russia during their period of service.
However, they are not allowed to play for teams in other countries. Translation: No NHL action for Semin just yet. The 24-year-old played his second year with Lada during the 2005-2006 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Alexander Semin, Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin
