Caps 7, Panthers 4

Who needs Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green when you've got Mathieu Perreault and Quintin Laing? With two of the league's most talented players sidelined with injuries, secondary scoring came from all sorts of sources tonight as the Caps routed the Panthers, 7-4, with a five-goal third period. Mike Knuble had two goals and two assists. Tomas Fleischmann had a pair of goals. And, of course, Perreault and Laing chipped in, too, as the Caps proved for the second straight night that they can, in fact, generate offense without Ovechkin in the lineup. Check out my game story here and my notebook here and then come on back for some notes and quotes that didn't make the cut:

Ovechkin on IR; Green, Schultz game-time decisions

A few quick updates: The Caps have placed Alex Ovechkin, who is still nursing a strain near his left shoulder, on injured reserve to make room for Eric Fehr on the roster. Ovechkin could, however, still return Wednesday against the Isles. Mike Green and Jeff Schultz, who both left last night's game with injuries, will be game-time decisions tonight against Florida at Verizon Center. Also, Shaone Morrisonn seems to have avoided a suspension for boarding Kenndal McArdle late in the third period against the Panthers. Coach Bruce Boudreau said that Morrisonn was put on probation at the end of last season and couldn't receive a major penalty in the Capitals' first 15 or 20 games -- he wasn't sure which -- but the league hasn't taken any disciplinary action yet. More to come in a bit from Mark Giannotto, who's stepping in for Tarik today (who's currently changing planes in

Ovechkin update: No better, no worse

After returning to practice Thursday, Alex Ovechkin did not taking the pre-game skate at BankAtlantic Center this morning. That doesn't necessarily mean he's had a setback, but when asked how he's feeling today, he said only, "Same." Ovechkin is expected to miss at least the next two games with a strain near his left shoulder. "It's getting better every day," Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "But [in terms] of percentages or degrees, I don't know. He might be one percent better. It's going to take time. He wants to play, but if he takes a major hit on it, and he's not 100-percent, he could be behind the eight ball for three weeks or four weeks. We don't want that." In their first game without Ovechkin on Wednesday, a 3-2 loss in New Jersey, the Caps did little to dispel the notion that they are significantly limited minus two-time MVP. That

(Jim McIsaac/Getty Images) Alex Ovechkin skated at practice yesterday (video here), but he said an injury near his left shoulder will likely keep him out of back-to-back games against the Florida Panthers. "It's still a little sore," Ovechkin said of his shoulder. "I feel a little bit better, but there is still a little bit [of] pain. From last night to today, I feel much better. "I don't want to disturb my injury," he added. "Without my stick, it's better." Click here to read the rest of the story, which delves deeper into the Caps' penalty woes.
Ovechkin likely out this weekend

Alex Ovechkin said his injury -- it's obvious now that it's a strain near his left shoulder -- continues to improve by leaps and bounds. But it has not improved enough to allow him to play in this weekend's back-to-back series with the Panthers, he said, after returning to practice this afternoon in Sunrise, Fla. "It's still a little sore," Ovechkin said. "I feel a little bit better, but there is still a little bit pain. From last night to today, I feel much better. It's not disturb me." I've got to find my hotel now, but I'll have more on Ovechkin, the Caps' penalty woes and other items of interest on the blog later and in the paper tomorrow.

Ovechkin returns to the ice

The Caps are on the ice here at BankAtlantic Center, and for for the first time since Sunday, Alex Ovechkin is among them. He's wearing a different colored jersey and is not assigned to a line, though, so it's obvious that he's not ready to go. Yet. Ovechkin seems to be moving easily, but his passes and shots appear to be at about 50 percent. He also seems to be in good spirits -- the two-time MVP just scored a goal and tried to celebrate, but he couldn't raise his left arm very high. After about 10 minutes, Ovechkin put his stick on the bench and now appears as though he's just going to skate. I'll get an update on his status later.

Ovechkin feeling 'a lot' better

Alex Ovechkin didn't take the morning skate and will miss his first game of the season tonight in New Jersey. But two-time MVP had some encouraging news for Coach Bruce Boudreau when the two spoke at Prudential Center earlier. "He said he's feeling better today, a lot better today," Boudreau said. "I was excited about that. I don't know how much better 'a lot better' is. But he's telling me he felt a lot better today. That's a positive sign. I think he's getting bored not practicing." Ovechkin suffered what's believed to be a strained left shoulder in Sunday's overtime loss to Columbus. He's officially listed as week to week with an upper-body injury.

Alexander the exception: Salary cap hockey picks, November 4

Even if he's not 100 percent, Alex Ovechkin might be fantasy hockey's top player.
The hockey world was abuzz this week as Alexander Ovechkin suffered an upper-body injury. Whenever the league's most prolific goal scorer gets hurt, people take notice. First deeming the injury something Ovechkin could deal with, the Capitals now have listed him as week-to-week, leaving many fantasy owners scrambling to make changes.

Ovechkin, to his credit, is talking about getting back on the ice. Normally you would disregard that type of talk. You shouldn't buy an injured player again until he is sufficiently healed and has proven it by getting a few games under his belt. Until that occurs, there are usually less risky options who are just as good.
But Ovechkin is the exception. He's so good that waiting to make sure he's fully recovered isn't an option. Even if he is suffering lingering effects from the injury, the rest of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

Backstrom: 'We have to keep going'

There's no question from anyone at KCI that the Capitals will miss Alex Ovechkin's presence, but they also agree that it's far from a death knell for a team loaded with talent. And the Capitals are anxious to remind everyone they can not just survive, but win, without the two-time Hart Trophy winner. "It's going to be a challenge," Nicklas Backstrom said. "We have to show we can play without him. He's a great player and I think he doesn't want to be out, but. ... we have to keep going." The most visible loss will be Ovechkin's goal-a-game average and offensive presence. But the Capitals know they don't necessarily need to score an extra goal a game to make up for the 24-year-old's absence, and that making a concerted effort to rededicate themselves defensively can have the same effect. "It's probably a long time coming," Mike Knuble said of

Hitchcock: Blue Jackets targeted Ovechkin

Yesterday, Caps Coach Bruce Boudreau said he thought the Columbus Blue Jackets were targeting Alex Ovechkin in Sunday night's game, ultimately leading to the star winger suffering an upper-body strain. "I think the game plan was, every time Alex touches the puck, that somebody run or hit him," Boudreau said. "That's what it looked like to me." Courtesy of the Columbus Dispatch's Tom Reed, here's Jackets Coach Ken Hitchcock's rather candid response: "That would be correct," Hitchcock said. "That's the name of the game. Why, is that against the rules now?" Hitchcock made it clear he thought it "unfortunate" that Ovechkin suffered an upper-body injury in the second period of the Jackets' 5-4 overtime win. The league's two-time MVP is "week-to-week" according to the Capitals with what's believed to be a shoulder injury. It remains unclear when Ovechkin suffered the injury. Boudreau believes it was in a scrum near the

Ovechkin: 'No better, no worse'

Alex Ovechkin spoke to the media this morning for the first time since Sunday night, when he suffered an upper-body strain against Columbus. The two-time reigning MVP is listed as week to week and expected to miss at least tomorrow night's game against New Jersey. On if he'll be ready to play in the back-to-back games against Florida this weekend: "I'm going to try, but you never know how it's going to be. It's still the same. No better, no worse; still the same." Whether this is a long-term injury: "I don't know, we'll see how it goes. Probably going to be quicker." If it's better to be hurt now, rather than closer to the playoffs: "You never want to get hurt, get some injury. Especially right now, when you're in good shape and feel pretty good about yourself. You get hurt and you take some [time] off and don't

Capitals' Ovechkin could be sidelined 2 weeks

The coach of the Washington Capitals says he hopes Alex Ovechkin won't be sidelined more than two weeks with an upper-body strain.

Coach Bruce Boudreau spoke after Tuesday's practice. The NHL's two-time MVP did not take part but was more optimistic, saying maybe he'll come back this weekend.

On Monday, the team said Ovechkin was week-to-week after he was hurt in Sunday's overtime loss to Columbus. Ovechkin had an MRI and was expected to travel with the team while receiving treatment.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin, Bruce Boudreau

New line combos in Ovechkin's absence

Practice just started at KCI and Bruce Boudreau rolled out a few new line combinations as the Capitals prepare for tomorrow's game against New Jersey without Alex Ovechkin. Boyd Gordon, who has missed eight straight games, is the only other player not on the ice. Fleischmann-Backstrom-Knuble Laich-Morrison-Semin Fehr-Perreault-Clark Laing-Steckel-Bradley As most of you already saw, Mathieu Perreault was recalled and Keith Aucoin was reassigned to Hershey this morning. The move means that Aucoin won't have to clear waivers the next time he is recalled, because he has played in just eight NHL games so far this season. Once he plays in two more NHL contests though, he will have to pass through waivers if he is sent back down. More to come.

Morning roundup: Caps downgrade Ovechkin

(Greg Fiume/Getty Images) One day after suffering an upper-body injury, Alex Ovechkin had his status downgraded from day to day to week to week: "Ovechkin suffered an upper-body strain in Sunday evening's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets and his status is week-to-week," the team announced in a news release late Monday afternoon. Ovechkin, the league leader in goals and points with 14 and 23, respectively, is not expected to play Wednesday in New Jersey. The 24-year-old all-star is, however, going to travel with the Capitals on their upcoming road trip while he receives medical treatment. The team has not yet ruled him out of this weekend's back-to-back games against Florida. Click here to read the whole story, and then check out some morning links:

The Caps just sent out this release, changing Alex Ovechkin's status from "day to day" to a more ominous "week to week:" Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin suffered an upper-body strain in Sunday evening's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets and his status is week-to-week, the team determined Monday. Ovechkin, the NHL leader in points (23) and goals (14) and the league's Second Star of the Month for October, is expected to miss the fifth game of his five-year career on Wednesday at New Jersey. He has only missed two games due to injury in his first four seasons. "We have to buckle down," head coach Bruce Boudreau said earlier Monday. "A goal a game he scores, so we got to play better defense and cannot allow four or five goals a game.
