It's been a couple of weeks since we've seen this: Alex Ovechkin practicing on the top line. There's no official word on whether the two-time MVP will return for tomorrow's game at Madison Square Garden, but this is the first time since Ovechkin was hurt on Nov. 1 that he's been assigned to a line in practice. Coach Bruce Boudreau, meantime, has shuffled his forward combos this morning at Prudential Center. Ovechkin-Backstrom-Clark. Laich-Morrison-Semin Fleischmann-Perreault-Bradley Laing-Steckel-Fehr. No sign of Boyd Gordon (back) or Milan Jurcina (lower body). I'll have more later.

Alex Ovechkin will miss his sixth straight game tonight, Coach Bruce Boudreau confirmed moments ago. And although the team still hasn't announced when he'll return, all indications are that No. 8 will be back in the lineup Tuesday at Madison Square Garden (after getting tomorrow off and a full practice Monday). "He's out, but he's very close to playing," Boudreau said. "He's not ready." Boudreau wouldn't say what his lineup will look like minus Ovechkin and Mike Knuble against the Devils at Prudential Center, but we'll get a clue during warmups. Alex Ovechkin skated hard at the end of the morning skate with the assistant coaches, which usually is a sure sign he won't be in the lineup tonight. But Ovechkin insisted that a decision on his status against the Devils has not been made --yet. "Well, you never know [but] I didn't talk to Bruce," Ovechkin said, referring, of course, to Coach Bruce Boudreau. "He just tell me be ready. So I [take] morning skate, and I'll go right now eat and sleep. And maybe I'm going to play today." Whether he plays tonight or not, it's clear that he looks ready to go. Alex Ovechkin will take the morning skate, then is expected to take the pre-game warm-up tonight at Prudential Center. If all goes well, the two-time MVP and team officials will then decide whether he'll return from a five-game absence and face the Devils. The Caps are 4-1-0 without Ovechkin, but they could certainly use the boost tonight with Mike Knuble out because of a broken finger. Perhaps Ovechkin will shed some more light on the subject after the skate. So stay tuned. Update:At one point during the morning skate, Ovechkin looked up at reporters and yelled playfully, "I'm playing tonight." But he has remained on the ice for some extra skating with the assistant coaches -- an activity usually reserved for players who will be scratches.
