Wheeler, Thomas give Bruins shootout win (AP)

Blake Wheeler scored in the shootout and Tim Thomas stopped all three Montreal attempts to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win over the Canadiens, who retired Patrick Roy's No. 33 jersey in a pre-game ceremony, on Saturday night. Wheeler beat Carey Price on Boston's first attempt when he appeared to lose control of the puck as he deked while driving in and momentum kept the puck traveling between the...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Tim Thomas, Patrick Roy, Carey Price

Bruins Continue Hot Streak, Tame Panthers 4-2

The Boston Bruins continued to assert their dominance in the NHL's Eastern Conference last night, defeating the Florida Panthers 4-2 in a game that was never even close.
On "Slap Shot Night," a promotion that featured numerous Slap Shot-related giveaways, including Hanson Brothers glasses, and appearances from Steve Carlson (who played Steve Hanson in the movie) and Paul D'Amato (Tim "Dr. Hook" McCracken of the Syracuse Bulldogs), the Bruins exemplified old-time hockey in the rout.
Phil Kessel scored on a breakaway less than three minutes into the game, and the team never looked back. Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, and Marc Savard also scored for the Bruins, giving the team a 4-1 lead going into the third.
At that point, a David Booth goal early in the first period - which originally bounced out of the net and was originally ruled no goal - was the only blemish on the scoreboard. Ville Peltonen added his first of the season with under four minutes remaining, but by then it was far too late to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers, Patrice Bergeron, Marc Savard, David Booth, Tim Thomas

Marc Savard's Transformation From Journeyman To Complete Player

Marc Savard has quietly become one of the most complete centers in the NHL. Everyone knew about his scoring and passing ability, but what is becoming more obvious this year is his ability to change and become better defensively.
Before coming to Boston, Savard played for three different teams over an up and down nine year career (New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers). He has never once had a plus/minus higher than +7 in a season. His only other plus season was in his second year with the Bruins and he was only a +3. Other than that, Savard has been a minus player including his first year with the Bruins when he was a -19 (a career low).
This season, Savard is already a +12. He leads the team in points with 27 and assists with 19. Despite the great numbers, it is obvious Savvy buys into Claude Julien's system. He is often the first forward back into the defensive zone and he has even seen some penalty killing time.
It is clear that Savvy finally gets it. He understands that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Marc Savard, Boston Bruins, Claude Julien

Boston Bruins the Hottest Team in the NHL— Are You Serious?

As a die-hard Bruins' fan, I was simply hoping for continued improvement and maybe clinching as high as the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. I felt they got better with the Michael Ryder addition and with Patrice Bergeron coming back from injury.
Did I expect this?
Absolutely not.
Tim Thomas is the best goaltender in the NHL right now and this team is playing better than anyone in the league. They have all bought into Claude Julien's system and they are all willing to stick up for one another.
Often called one of the most boring teams to watch last season, they are the exact opposite this season. Anyone on this team can score goals. Marc Savard might be the best passer in the game. Did I mention a beast of a man named Milan Lucic is close to the top of the league in hits, can score, pass, and fight (ask Mike Komisarek about his fighting ability)?
This team is absolutely on fire. After a slow start, they are 11-1-1 in their last 13 games. Are you kidding me? That is absolutely ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens

Boston Bruins Thrilled: Tim Thomas Is Once Again Proving Critics Wrong

After a 28-win season, where he made the All-Star Game, Tim Thomas is once again having to prove critics wrong. And he's doing a great job of it. Voters again decided to leave the 34 year-old Thomas off of this season's All-Star Ballot, despite a great start to the 2008-2009 campaign. How did he respond? He is currently the NHL's best overall goaltender with a record of 8-2-3 record, a sparkling .944 save percentage, and an equally great 1.80 GAA. So why, I ask you does Thomas get left out of the picture year after year?
We all know he doesn't mind, and he's just "happy to be here," as he keeps saying, and he has historically played better when under the radar. So maybe he's better off just playing his game, and putting up Vezina Trophy quality numbers while nobody pays attention.
Us Bruins fans know exactly what Tim Thomas is capable of.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Tim Thomas, Boston Bruins, All-Star Game

Habs-Bruins: The Pregame Update

It's a typical Saturday morning. Leaves are getting raked and yards cleaned up for impending winter. Kids are driven to their sports teams or hanging out with friends, perhaps supplies for Thanksgiving dinner or early Christmas presents are being bought. Just another typical weekend.
But in two cities, there is something else going on, something darker. Tension and anticipation are mixed as true fans count the hours before the puck drops.
Must be a Montreal/Boston hockey game. You can smell it in the air. It is said that "Time heals all wounds," but not in his case. These teams hate each other.
Not to the degree of their respective fans, but the hate is there nonetheless.
Tonight's matchup can be boiled down to two basic elements: Pride and Pressure.
The Bruins are dealing with more pride than pressure, as they want to show that the last game was no fluke, that last season was last season, that there is a new order of all things Bruins.
If they lose this game, they are still near the top ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins

Boston Bruins: Is the Tunnel Getting Shorter, or is the Light Just Brighter?

It's been such a long time...
Cam Neely did it. He sunk the hook in and set it deep. He set the standard for what I expected of the Bruins.
Too young to remember with any clarity the glory days of the late 60's to mid 80's, I'd missed the bus on the Orr/Espo reign and its transition to the Lunch-pail gang. I came in, compared to many of the fans I knew, late in the game.
I remember no Stanley Cups toted around by members of the spoken B's, no parades, and no beer splattered on public officials on still chilly spring days.
All I remember was hope; motivating, encouraging, frustrating, maddening hope.
Then came the famous press conference where Neely tearfully announced he was retiring. Still only in his early thirties, the physical abuse he endured for so long had taken its toll. Cam could no longer be rebuilt.
I cried with him, as did most Bruins fans. We knew it was coming but that maddening hope constantly whispered in our ear, "It's Neely, he'll come back, he ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins

Finally! The Boston Bruins Are Getting Respect

The Boston Bruins are the first sports team I can honestly say I loved. Since I was six years old, I can remember watching them play on Channel 38 and NESN, watching the games with my Dad while guys like Bourque, Neely, Moog, Heinz, Donato, and Oates patrolled the Ice at the old Garden.
Then in the mid-'90s, after the Bruins suffered some playoff losses and moved to the Fleet Center it stopped being all about winning to the team. The three headed monster of Harry Sinden, Mike O'Connell, and Jeremy Jacobs did all they could do to ruin this team, focusing on the bottom line and decimating the roster until well into the new millennium.
Guys like Joe Thornton, Michael Nylander, Sergei Gonchar, Byron Dafoe, Bill Guerin, Sergei Samsonov, Kyle McLaren, Hal Gill, and PJ Stock were all mysteriously traded or released, frustrating the fan base and disconnecting them with the team.
There were several times when me and my Dad were fed up with the organization, but never gave up on ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins

The Resurrection Of The Boston Bruins

A week ago, I did a double-take when reading the score of the game between the Bruins and the Canadiens.
Could it be true? Did my eyes deceive me? Did the Bruins really beat the Habs 6-1?
And then it hit me- These aren't the '07-'08 Bruins. Nor are they the '06-'07 or '05-'06 version.
We are witnessing the resurrection of the Black and Gold. They now have the pieces to be good this year and many years to come. For the first time in recent memory, they have no glaring weakness. They have the pieces, and they're putting them together.
Any discussion about the Bruins offense must involve Marc Savard, who has been phenomenal thus far. With 25 points, he's the Bruins assist and point leader and on pace for a 108 point season. But he isn't the only player pulling his weight. The young forwards for the Bruins have exceeded expectations as well. Six of the Bruins top ten scorers are age 25 or under.
Tim Thomas is playing absolutely spectacular right now, and Manny Fernandez ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins

Sabres Abandon System, Collapse in Boston

The Boston Bruins defeated the Buffalo Sabres in a 7-4 rout in Boston last night. It is no secret the Sabres are struggling as of late. They have lost three straight games by allowing at least five goals against and have only won three in their last 10 games.
It was not so long ago when Buffalo recorded back to back shutouts and sat atop the Northeast Division. Now those high hopes linger just a smidge and the players are left sitting in the locker-room scratching their heads...
What is going on?
It is evident to those who follow the Sabres to know that they have completely abandoned the defensive system that lead to their early season success.
The Sabres started the '08-'09 campaign with a new mindset. Defense first, offense second. They dumped and chased, played sound defensively, out worked their opponent and made very little mistakes with the puck. Totally opposite to what the team has been accustomed to in years previous, which has been run and gun, and giving up odd man rushes a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins

Bruins-Sabres: Boston, Down Early, Rips Off Five Unanswered Goals to Win

Well, what can I say about this game?
Both goalies played terribly. Lucky enough for the Bruins, Miller played a little worse than Manny Fernandez.
Seven Bruins players had multiple points in this shooting gallery. Chuck Kobasew and Zedeno Chara each had two goals, and Marc Savard had a goal and three assists.
After falling behind 4-2 in the first, the Bruins scored five unanswered goals—and Marc Savard figured in on four of them.
The Bruins (12-3-4, 28 pts, first place in the Northeast Division) really capitalized on neutral-zone turnovers in this game, which led to several three-on-twos and two-on-ones.
The big difference in this game was the the Bruins capitalized on their chances and Buffalo didn't.
Sabres goalie Ryan Miller played about as poorly as a goalie can play. He couldn't stop anything. After a dreadful first period, in which he made 10 saves on 14 shots, he came back in the second and picked right back up where he left off, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Marc Savard

Both goalies played terribly. Lucky enough for the Bruins, Ryan Miller played a little worse than Manny Fernandez, who overcame a 4-3 deficit after one period to shut out the visitors the rest of the way in a 7-4 Bruins victory Wednesday.
Seven Bruins players had multiple points in this shootout. Chuck Kobasew and Zdeno Chara each had two goals and Marc Savard had a goal and three assists.

Buffalo-Boston: Sabres' Downward Spiral Continues

At media interviews held yesterday in Buffalo, head coach Lindy Ruff said he was going to shake up this team a bit: changing defensive pairings, swapping players on the top three lines, as well as giving a fourth line more playing time to play more physical against the Boston Bruins. "Last game Milan Lucic outhit our entire team," muttered Ruff.
A change was in order, according to the coach, as well as their pitiful record over the last 10 games.
The only problem with this well thought-out plan was the fact that I am sure Lindy Ruff never dreamed his team would actually play worse and give up seven goals in the process.
Buffalo came out on fire tonight, lighting the lamp four times alone in the first period. Boston was having no shortage of goal scoring themselves as they were able to net three goals in the first. Both teams had very quality scoring chances and capitalized on their opportunities.
Neither goalie was particularly sharp in the first period, but things would settle down...or ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Buffalo Sabres, Lindy Ruff, Boston Bruins

Well look who’s on top now, the Boston Bruins. For the second consecutive season in the Northeast division, a surprise team has flown off to a hot start and placed themselves at the top of the division, overtaking the Montreal Canadiens—the favorites in the Northeast heading into this season—for first place in the division and second place in the conference. But how have the Bruins done it? Going up against skill teams like the Canadiens, high-scoring teams like the Buffalo Sabres, and hard-working teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Bruins haven’t had an easy task throughout the first two months of the season, but they’ve adapted to whatever style they’ve been faced with. For the most part, there isn’t really an overly-impressive aspect of this team. While they do have the number-nine ranked powerplay in the league (20.3%), their penalty killing is pretty average—actually exactly middle-of-the-road—coming in at fifteenth at 81.8%. Wait, a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins Don't Care If You Watch...But You Really Should

Where we come from, we love hockey, and for the die hard-in this area, our love for hockey ranks probably a seven to maybe an eight on the Toronto/Buffalo scale. Lets face it—when you live in the Boston area these days there are plenty of distractions in the local sporting world.
Nonetheless, many of us know the feeling of waking up before sunrise to go to hockey practice, we remember what mom and dad really looked like before they had their coffee, and we remember what it was like to look in the local paper at the NHL standings. We knew where to find hockey cards, we knew which of our friends had a relative that played with Craig Janney or the Thayer Academy boys, and we knew what our own prized possessions were.
For me it was a game used Reggie Lemelin stick and an autographed Bobby Orr book, "Orr on Ice," which my mother got before I was born, when she had Bruins season tickets. My close friend boasted several, SEVERAL autographed pictures of Ray Borque that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins

Fun Facts About the NHL Playoffs

  Longest Moment
One of the most exciting things about Stanley Cup playoff hockey is sudden-death overtime. When the next goal decides the winner, games can go on for hours and hours.
The longest NHL playoff game happened on March 24, 1936, between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Maroons. The game finished at 2:30 in the morning, when Martin "Mud" Bruteneau scored the winning goal for the Maroons after 116 minutes and 30 seconds of extra time—that's nearly six periods of O.T.
The final score was 1-0.

  Darkest Moment
During the second period of Game Four of the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Edmonton Oilers, the lights went out at the Boston Garden.
A 4,000-volt switch overloaded and the brain-dead maintenance workers at the arena weren't able to turn the lights back on. The Stanley Cup playoff game was cancelled and replayed two nights later in Edmonton—where arena staff were able to keep the power on for the entire game.

Bruins Start Season on a Better Note

The Boston Bruins’ motto for the 2008-09 season is “We Want It As Bad As You.” Only 17 games into the NHL 2009 Season, and the Bruins are already showing they mean it.
The B’s tout the second-best record in the Eastern Conference coming into the week, and they have earned it. With wins over rival teams Buffalo and Montreal, it appears as though the Bruins are going in a different direction—one that has led them to numerous first round playoff exits in recent years.
“We’re feeling good, we’re having a lot of fun and obviously that Dallas game, you know, we’re a team to be reckoned with,” said Bruins center Marc Savard, who leads the team in points with 19. “We believe in our room, and that’s all that really matters.”
The Bruins have worked well as a team, with younger players stepping up into roles, and older players knowing theirs. The youth movement has quite possibly been the biggest surprise of all, with players ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Boston Bruins
