Craig Anderson stopped 30 shots for Colorado, which was 3-6-1 in its previous 10 games after a surprisingly strong start to the season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Colorado Avalanche, Philadelphia Flyers, Paul Stastny

Contenders Or Pretenders: Could The Real Flames Please Step Up

They have shown they can beat Montreal.
They have shown they can beat St.Louis.
They have shown they can beat Edmonton.
But now it is time that the 12-5-2 Calgary Flames showed they can beat a good hockey club.
One who is above them in the standings; which is something they have not done all year.
Otherwise all this Stanley Cup contenders, and top team in Canada talk is just the regular premature hype that has surrounded the Flames since their 2004 playoff run.
Tuesday's game against the Colorado Avalanche should have produced better results, considering the Av's came into the game division leaders and had already beaten the Flames at home this season.
Now factor into the equation that Calgary was the only Canadian club not to beat the Avalanche on their western swing and you may need to ask the question.
Did the Flames fall victim to believing their own hype?
Now they face a Chicago Blackhawks club with an identical record at 12-5-2, a team that put them out in the first-round of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche: David Jones Proving to Be Late Round Jem

Not many players drafted in the ninth round end up becoming top line forwards, but David Jones of the Avalanche is a rare exception.
In fact, Jones was almost never drafted; he was taken 288th overall out of 292 drafted players in the 2003 Entry Draft. But Avalanche brass saw something in him, and decided to use their late round Hail Mary pick on him.
Right now, he's making them look like geniuses.
Originally an injury call up late in the 2008 season, the 25-year-old Jones has managed to stick in the Avalanche line-up due to his large frame and straight away speed.
But he's beginning to show he also has some scoring touch, compiling seven goals (two short-handed) and 11 points through 18 games this season. He's recently been bumped up to the top line with Paul Stastny and Wojtek Wolski as a result of his strong play.
He's also been one of the Avalanche's biggest hitters, second most among Avalanche forwards. Even though he throws his body around, he's only racked up two penalty minutes all ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Colorado Avalanche

Angles Galore Out Of Wednesdays Win For The Oilers: Some Good, Some Bad.

After Wednesday's come-from-behind win over the Colorado Avs, a blogger like myself had a plethora of story lines to select from. Should I talk about Jeff Deslauriers finally getting some game action, only to start out poorly, worry the entire coaching staff, then make up for it towards the latter half of the game? It would have been scary if the Oilers felt they had to play Khabibulin more than they're already playing him. Maybe how Tom Gilbert, who has had a rough season to start, was so bad in the first half of the game and directly responsible for the Avs first two goals, that it forced head coach Pat Quinn to bench him. Gilbert received a total of 7:41 seconds of ice time throughout the night. Message sent loud and clear I would guess. I noticed too that Ethan Moreau, Zack Stortini, and Andrew Cogliano weren't seen or heard from much. I thought Cogs played well when he was on the ice, but Quinn didn't use any of the three that often (I suppose one should account for the 17 penalty ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Edmonton Oilers, Ales Hemsky, Gilbert Brule, Colorado Avalanche

Sticking to the Program: Edmonton Oilers Come from Behind Against Avs

In the middle of the week when all the sports media could talk about was how much the they had been losing as of late, the Edmonton Oilers ground out a gritty, come-from-behind win against the Northwest-division leaders, the Colorado Avalanche.
This young Oilers team, undersized in comparison to the Avs and without J.F. Jacques and Ryan Stone in the lineup, showed that it could stand up to the likes of the Scott Hannans and Brett Clarks.
At times during this game it was frustrating to watch some of the defensive gaffs and missed assignments. But so quickly did the tempo of the game change once the Oilers had some wind at their back - home town momentum - that it really made for an emotional roller-coaster-ride.
The Oilers need to get over the age hill and fast. The fact that the team is so young still may contribute to all the highs and lows over the course of a game. The abundance of young players on this team means that there are some really high peaks and some really low valleys.
Luckily ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche

Peter Forsberg Opts To Stay in Sweden

Just like that, the Peter Forsberg rumors come to an end.
Well, at least for this season.
Various sources report that the former Avalanche star is going to stay in Sweden to play for the financially troubled Modo of the Swedish Elite League. Rumors (there's that word again) are also floating around that former NHL star (and Forsberg's boyhood friend) Marcus Naslund will come out of retirement to also join Modo.
Both players played for Modo prior to being drafted, so it's likely they feel indebted and understand that they can, at the very least, help fill the stands and generate some buzz around the last place team.
