Carolina goaltender Cam Ward was helped off the ice in the first period of the Hurricanes' game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ward knelt for a couple of minutes on the ice before he was attended to by team trainers. As he was being helped off, drops of blood hit the ice. Ward stretched to make a save while the Blue Jackets' Rick Nash was skating through the crease at the 7:35 mark. It appeared Nash might have nicked Ward in the groin area with a skate.

Chief among the nearly 20 options are ideas for public-private partnerships that would provide the NHL team relief from its lease agreement at Nationwide Arena, although at the expense of taxpayers in some of the scenarios. The report, issued Thursday, was commissioned by the ColumbusChamber and written by Stephen Buser, an emeritus professor of finance at Ohio State University. Yesterday, Blue Jackets Coach Ken Hitchcock told reporters that he did indeed tell his players to target Alex Ovechkin -- "Run, chase, hunt down, hit, whatever word you want to use that would be correct," he said -- in their game against the Caps on Sunday. After the best start in franchise history, winning five of their first six games, the Jackets finished the month of October with an ugly six games stretch going 1-4-1. In those final six games, the Jackets gave up an average of 4.83 goals a game: not exactly a typical Hitchcock hockey team. Although recent play might not suggest it, the Jackets are prone to go on a roll in the month of November. One of the main factors that went into the Jackets ending the month as poorly as they did was due to the fact that they had to make two separate trips to the west coast and it caught up to them toward the end of the month. In the month of November, the Jackets only have to leave the Eastern Time Zone once.
