Joined in Progress? Avalanche Lose Out to Red Wings Before Season Even Begins

The national broadcast schedule is out and the Avalanche will be featured 13 times . Unlucky 13. The ol' one-three. Yep, let's try and focus on an ill-conceived superstition rather than the fact that, once again, the Avalanche's season-opener will be joined in progress. That's right, the start to a season's worth of Avalanche-watching will be led off with gaggles of Avalanche fans crossing their fingers that the Red Wings-Leafs game won't go to overtime. Then there will be some cursory analysis of the Wings-Leafs game while those same fans simultaneously scream "CUT TO THE F'N GAME!" at their television screens. And, finally, a harsh camera-cut to action already in progress. Maybe it's silly "pie-in-the-sky" thinking, but I love the buildup before the first game of the season. I love seeing some pre-game warmup shots; some early analysis; watching the goaltender waiting at the door, head down while getting psyched up; then watching him charge down the gate to christen a new season. But, again, my ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings

To Sweden, with Love: An Apprecation of Swedish Players in the NHL

No I'm not over six feet tall, blond, or have blue eyes. I wasn't born in Sweden—in fact, I've never been there. But yet I find myself attracted to the imports that grace the National Hockey League. This may shock you—I'm actually Canadian!
We're supposed to love our players and always remind other hockey-playing nations that we are the greatest. I like to think—no, wait, I know I do my part. That being said, over the last decade or more I can't help notice the Swedes are Europe's "Canucks."
The Swedes have won their share of International titles—including Gold at the last Olympics. But this article is not based on that country's success. It about the overall observations I've made with all the individuals in the NHL.
First and foremost, they are humble. Even the superstars. A trait similar to Canadian superstar hockey players—imagine that!
Players like Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson, and Nick Lidstrom are captains of their respective teams—an honour ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Detroit Red Wings

Who Is Andreas Jamtin? A Look Into the Newest New York Ranger

If you've been looking at the Rangers roster in recent weeks (www.newyorkrangers.com), then you've seen players like Greg Moore and Lauri Korpikoski erased from it, while Andreas Jamtin has been added. Who is this kid?
As I'm sure you all know, Jamtin was a free agent playing in Europe that the Rangers signed during the summer. Reading some scouting reports on him, he's said to be "like Tomas Holmstrom, but a better skater." Wow. That sounds almost too good to be true!
A few years back, Jamtin was a late draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings. So were the aforementioned Holmstrom, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Nick Lidstrom, etc. To be honest, he was part of quite possibly the best European scouting system in the NHL.
I'm not sure why the Red Wings let him go, but I will tell you this. A few years back, Jamtin was demoted from his Swedish team due to bad conduct. Is this kid a malcontent? Is he the Swedish version of Sean Avery? ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Tomas Holmstrom

Detroit Red Wings: Fantasy Prospect Report

The Detroit Red Wings have a reputation among hockey fans and National Hockey League insiders as being one of the best franchises at identifying and developing talent selected after the first round of the annual NHL entry draft.
Much of this perception was based on the later round selections of forwards Henrik Zetterberg (7th round, 1999) and Pavel Datsyuk (6th round, 1998). Both players rank high in any list of the biggest draft day steals.

Whether perception is actually reality, though, is a different question.

Despite their reputation, the Wings have not had a lot of success getting their recent draft picks into their NHL line-up. In fact, excluding forward Johan Franzen (a third round selection in 2004), the 36 players the Red Wings have selected in the 2003-2007 drafts have only played a total of 36 National Hockey League games.

Still, one of the great luxuries of being an elite NHL franchise is the ability to be patient, and there are still some prospects in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Detroit Red Wings

Toronto Maple Leafs: Projected Lineup for 2008-09 NHL Season

With all the minor moves that the Maple Leafs made and the couple major moves, they just may have a shot at the playoffs. If not this season, then they should next season, when they have a permanent GM in place and possibly will have completed their rebuilding stage. This is what I think the Maple Leafs will look like when the start the season in Detroit on October 9:

Henrik Zetterberg: Future Hall of Famer, No. 6

In this ten part series, I will be dissecting ten different careers thus far. The series is fully called “Players Ages 28 and Younger who will end up in the Hall of Fame.” Feel free to argue a selection or the rankings at the end of the series.
Henrik Zetterberg was a long shot when he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the seventh round (210th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Though impressed with his skill, Mike Ilitch and the Detroit management figured he would be more of a fourth-line winger who would most likely have to play a few years in the minors before making it big time in the NHL. But, much to their surprise, the Njurunda, Sweden native proved to be a third-line player filled with determination and will.
Zetterberg earned praise from veterans like Leafs captain Mats Sundin, who said the talented young winger reminded him of Peter Forsberg. Zetts has overcome the odds and emerged as an asset to the organization.
In no time at all, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Henrik Zetterberg, Detroit Red Wings
