What Is the Tipping Point for the Edmonton Falcons... Er... Oilers?

News came in today that the Los Angeles Kings, hit with a mere 39 man games lost to injury this season, called up Brayden Schenn on an emergency basis after Andrei Loktionov injured his shoulder in the Wednesday match against the Oilers. Now I understand it's a matter of perspective, but with the Oilers losing 146 man games to injury this season, it's interesting that the Oilers wouldn't have tried anything similar by giving some guys one-game tryouts with the kind of injuries we have seen. If anybody qualified for this kind of thing, I would think it would be the Oilers. Think of all the unsigned prospects in the Oilers system that we can finally test out with such an opportunity. Sure, there was the Torrie Jung emergency scare against the Blackhawks. But with three days between the Kings game and the time the San Jose Sharks came to town, the Oilers had more options than more Falcons callups. We could pull Linus Omark over for a one-game tryout. The Oilers won the game against the Coyotes 4-0. It was an important game for the team to win considering what's facing them in their schedule over the next two weeks. Edmonton played almost two good periods of hockey and honestly played well enough to win, but they chose to let their goalie Jeff Deslauriers bail them out in the third period to "earn" his shutout. As Pat Quinn put it, the Oilers got "fat and happy," and I'm not sure there is a better way to describe the shape of the Oilers franchise (no pun intended). Since the Oilers made that magical run to the Stanley Cup in '06, they've been living off the residuals. The city fell back in love with a team that gave them hope for a winner, and from that moment on, it's been almost impossible to fully understand the continued and loyal foolish optimism. Are The Edmonton Oilers a Team With No Direction?

Dustin Penner has easily been the Edmonton Oilers best hockey player this season. With now 13 goals and 25 points and a plus/minus +11 in 23 games, Penner has been the only shining spot in an otherwise poor season for the Oilers to date. Hemsky, Visnovksy, and Ladislav Smid have also been good for Edmonton, but none (with the exception of Penner) have had a point in the season go by without some harsh criticism. In fact, it wasn't just days ago that Associate Coach Tom Renney was seen giving the gears to Ales Hemsky for his lack of effort in both games and practices, relying on skill alone to help work the Oilers out of this slump. Both Renney and Pat Quinn understand, that while skill is great and not all players possess it, skill isn't enough to win those battles, wars and ultimately hockey games that the Oilers so badly need to win. Angles Galore Out Of Wednesdays Win For The Oilers: Some Good, Some Bad.

After Wednesday's come-from-behind win over the Colorado Avs, a blogger like myself had a plethora of story lines to select from. Should I talk about Jeff Deslauriers finally getting some game action, only to start out poorly, worry the entire coaching staff, then make up for it towards the latter half of the game? It would have been scary if the Oilers felt they had to play Khabibulin more than they're already playing him. Maybe how Tom Gilbert, who has had a rough season to start, was so bad in the first half of the game and directly responsible for the Avs first two goals, that it forced head coach Pat Quinn to bench him. Gilbert received a total of 7:41 seconds of ice time throughout the night. Message sent loud and clear I would guess. I noticed too that Ethan Moreau, Zack Stortini, and Andrew Cogliano weren't seen or heard from much. I thought Cogs played well when he was on the ice, but Quinn didn't use any of the three that often (I suppose one should account for the 17 penalty ...

Sticking to the Program: Edmonton Oilers Come from Behind Against Avs

In the middle of the week when all the sports media could talk about was how much the they had been losing as of late, the Edmonton Oilers ground out a gritty, come-from-behind win against the Northwest-division leaders, the Colorado Avalanche. This young Oilers team, undersized in comparison to the Avs and without J.F. Jacques and Ryan Stone in the lineup, showed that it could stand up to the likes of the Scott Hannans and Brett Clarks. At times during this game it was frustrating to watch some of the defensive gaffs and missed assignments. But so quickly did the tempo of the game change once the Oilers had some wind at their back - home town momentum - that it really made for an emotional roller-coaster-ride. The Oilers need to get over the age hill and fast. The fact that the team is so young still may contribute to all the highs and lows over the course of a game. Wow: what a string of injuries. In addition to the already long string of injuries on the Oilers roster, today there was news that both Fernando Pisani and Patrick O'Sullivan have sustained injuries. Though the contribution from Springfield Falcons' call-ups have been amiable so far, one wonders how much longer the Oilers will have to keep going to the well before it's dry. Will we have to start calling up Thunder players from Stockton? It's interesting to see that the Oilers have so much depth and that they're still losing close games despite this. However, the key is that they're still losing. This is a sickening amount of man games lost to injury so far this season and I'm hard-pressed to find a team that has been hit worse. Another problem is that so many injuries also inhibits GM Steve Tambellini's ability to assess his team and solve problems of holes on the roster.
