The Morning Skate: Oilers slow while Avalanche roll

                    Ron Smith, Sporting News

What to expect in the NHL today.
Hot and cold
After a 6-2-1 start that surprised even the most optimistic fans in Edmonton, the Oilers have fallen on hard times—a tumble precipitated in equal parts by injuries, a three-week flu bug and listless play, both offensively and defensively. The Oilers have lost six of their last seven games—scoring only five goals in those six losses while being shut out three times—and play 11 of their next 16 games on the road. The one bright spot is the play of veteran Nikolai Khabibulin, who has posted a .910 save percentage despite being peppered by more shots than all but one goalie in the league. And it won't get any easier tonight when the Oilers play a red-hot Colorado team that has a hot goaltender of its own in Craig Anderson along with the best record in the Western Conference and a 6-0-0 mark on home ice. What a difference a year makes! The Avs will ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Atlanta Thrashers

Edmonton-Tampa Bay: Depth Trade Shaping Up?

There's a rumour out there that the Oilers are scouting the Tampa Bay Lightning, that came to me by way of reading a post over at The Copper & Blue .
Barring suggestions of Olympic scouting (Stamkos?), there are a few interesting trade possibilities for the Oilers.
Many are suggesting the deal would be for Ryan Malone or Steve Downie , two players who would look great in Oilers uniforms.
I think it may be more of a depth move, however. Downie would fit in with Quinn's vision of using guys like Brule, Jacques and Stone as "crusty" line compliments, but he seems to be the kind of player that the Lightning need. Same thing with Malone, who is enjoying a great season so far.
In my estimation, any move with the lightning would be a setup move.
Why?
Firstly, the Oilers have no cap space to work with.
Secondly, most of the Lightning impact players verge on untouchable status.
Thus, it is now that I bring your attention to other players of note on the Lightning roster in Jeff ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Jeff Halpern, Paul Ranger, Antero Niittymaki

There are always cheesy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Edmonton Oilers

Eugene Melnyk Files Grievance Over Dany Heatley Dispute

According to an article from Sun Media's Bruce Garrioch, Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Ottawa Senators, has filed a grievance with the NHL over this summer's highly publicized dispute with winger Dany Heatley.
Melnyk is hoping to get back the $4 million bonus he paid to Heatley this summer.
The Senators contend that the Heatley camp did, in fact, give them permission to speak with the Edmonton Oilers and that the Penner, Cogliano and Smid package offered by the Oilers should have been a done deal.
As we all know, Heatley used his no-trade clause to reject the deal to Edmonton and ultimately got his way and was shipped off to sunny California.
The process could take as long as two years to be resolved but Melnyk is stubborn enough that he's willing to fight this to the end.
For a wealthy man like Melnyk I'm sure this isn't really about the money. This is a matter of principle to Melnyk and the Senators organization who feel they were wronged by Heatley this summer.
Deputy Commissioner Bill ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Dany Heatley, Ottawa Senators, Eugene Melnyk, Edmonton Oilers

Robert Nilsson for Todd Marchant? Would You Make That Trade?

Rumors have circulated that Anaheim might be looking for a bit more scoring punch to help kick-start the struggling Ducks. The player who's been rumored as trade material is veteran centre Todd Marchant.
Whether there is truth to this or not, I do not know, but it would be an interesting conversation in the Oilers management meetings to say the least.
Robert Nilsson isn't doing the Oilers any good. What he brings is an incredible skill level that hasn't quite reached its peak in the NHL.
A change of scenery could be exactly what Nilsson needs. If Anaheim is looking for some scoring touch, is Nilsson someone they'd consider taking a chance on? Good question.
Todd Marchant could do the Oilers a world of good. He's older, but still has the wheels. He's an ex-Oiler with a great track record in the city, plus he brings elements to the team it's missing in spades right now.
Marchant can win you faceoffs. In fact, he'd rank amongst the top faceoff guys in Edmonton, second only to Shawn Horcoff in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Edmonton Oilers, Todd Marchant, Anaheim Ducks
