What Do Kessel, Wilson, Gustavsson, and Back to Back Wins Have in Common?

Yeah...I don't know either!
I'm just kidding, this weekend promises to be a great weekend in Leaf land! Playing two games in two nights is always a test for any team, however, Friday's game is against a dismal Hurricane team that has only one more win than the Leafs (that was before Stall was hurt). Next up are the Detroit Red Wings . Who are obviously a little tired and beat up, after playing nine preseason games in 12 nights, traveling to Sweden, and going on a five game road trip for 11 days.
"I knew all this before it started, but what do you do? Do you tell them it's going to be tough? Who cares?" said Coach Babcock in a recent interview.
Phil Kessel will start his second game in a Leafs jersey, and after putting a career high 10 shot on net vs the Lightning , there is a lot of reason for optimism. Although now, former line mate, Matt Stajan is quick to admit there is a lot of pressure to perform it the Big Smoke, he says it won't come from the team.
Hopefully he doesn't ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Phil Kessel, Jeff Finger, Toronto Maple Leafs, Jason Blake, Garnet Exelby

Speed Won't Kill Leafs, But It Might Not Help Either

Ron Wilson has tried just about every coaching technique at his disposal to get the Leafs going.
His latest plan? Speed.
Wilson inserted John Mitchell into Toronto's "top" line, putting the fast Mitchell between the quick Jason Blake and the speedy Phil Kessel.
Speed is an important strategy in hockey, but also one of the more misunderstood ones.
Speed for the sake of speed doesn't mean anything in and of itself. Games are won on the number of goals scored. There are no points awarded for the fastest forward on the ice.
So let's look ahead to Wilson's new speed line. He has his top line on the ice and they've caught an opposing team in a change. There's a three-on-one for Toronto crossing into the offensive zone.
The lone opposing defenseman sees three Leafs flying down the ice at him: Kessel, who finished last season with 36 goals, but is just returning from an injury; Blake, who has one goal on the season; and Mitchell, who also has no goals on the season. Who does Wilson think the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Phil Kessel, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ron Wilson, Jason Blake

2009/2010 Toronto Maple Leafs No. 2: Black October

A vortex of broken goaltenders and misplaced blame imploded spectacularly Monday night, equalizing the black hole that was the Toronto Maple Leafs' win column and sending palpable shockwaves through the hockey universe. Having increased their point total 300 percent, a veritable scramble for group identification swept across the continent, either to voice their undying support for their beloved franchise or to scathingly remind the masses that other NHL teams win all the time. But already the collective breath had been exhaled, as Leafs fans looked at each other or within themselves as though Brian Burke had spoken directly to their hearts: “It's over, now forget it already.”

It will never be debated that, although statistically not the most terrible stretch in team history, MLSE is unlikely to commemorate a plaque to the Toronto Maple Leafs of October 2009. Even should the Maple Leafs win their remaining three games this month, the resulting four-game winning streak hardly compares to the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs, Jason Blake
