Semyon Varlamov will start in goal tonight for the Caps, who are looking to win their sixth straight game overall and 12th in a row over the Bolts. Mike Smith, meantime, is expected to get the nod for Tampa Bay. Alex Ovechkin is back from a two-game suspension and defenseman Shaone Morrisonn will return from a two-week layoff because of a concussion. Karl Alzner has been reassigned and Matt Bradley has returned to Arlington for family reasons. The rest of the lineup should look like this: Forwards Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin Fleischmann-Morrison-Fehr Laich-Perreault-Clark Sloan-Steckel-Giroux Defense Schultz-Green Morrisonn-Poti Erskine-Pothier Goalies Varlamov Theodore I'll have a little more after the game.

Tampa Bay Lightning Finally Snap Skid Amid Vinny Rumors (Again)

Mike Smith had perhaps his best game as goaltender of the Tampa Bay Lightning while the slumbering Bolts offense finally rumbled to life in Tampa Bay's 4-0 blanking of the New York Islanders.
The Bolts dominated as the rumor mill begins to churn once again with the rumor that seemingly never dies—Vincent Lecavalier to Montreal. More on that in a second.
First let's talk about Smith, who was Jekyll last night instead of Mr. Hyde. Smith stood on his head, making save after brilliant save against the Isles.
"Personally, I've been working really hard lately and I haven't been rewarded for it. I've played some good hockey, but pucks have gone in the net and ultimately we've been losing hockey games that we need to win," Smith said. "I think more importantly it's big for our team. We've been sliding a little bit right now in the standings and it's important to stay close to the pack at this time of year and not separate yourself too far."
"Mike Smith was excellent," coach Rick Tocchet said. "He ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Tampa Bay Lightning, Mike Smith, Vincent Lecavalier, New York Islanders

Tampa Bay Lightning First Quarter Report

The Tampa Bay Lightning concluded a solid first quarter of the 2009-10 NHL season with a winning record and some confidence. There have been playmakers, some solid goal tending, and something the team lacked last season: defense. If the playoffs were to begin today, your Tampa Bay Lightning would be among the elite eight in the Eastern Conference. In fact, three Southeast Division teams would be there, including Washington as the No. 1 seed. The Southeast is tied with the Northeast for most division participants in the top eight of the Eastern conference, making it one of the toughest divisions this side of the Mississippi. So what about this Jekyl and Hyde Bolts team? There are times when they're on the ice that harkens back to the days when Lord Stanley had to wear sunscreen. Then there are games where they look like Barry Melrose has risen from the NHL coaching grave to haunt this team. Let's look back at the first quarter of the season and highlight some impressive moments. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Tampa Bay Lightning, Mike Smith, Antero Niittymaki, Vincent Lecavalier
