The Minnesota Wild traded former first-round draft choice Benoit Pouliot to Montreal for left wing Guillaume Latendresse on Monday. The 23-year-old Pouliot has been one of a handful of first-round disappointments for the Wild in recent years after being taken fourth overall in 2005. Defenseman A.J. Thelen, drafted in 2004, never played for the team and 2006 pick James Sheppard, a center, has not developed as quickly as the team had hoped.

The Minnesota Wild traded former fourth overall pick Benoit Pouliot to the Montreal Canadiens for 22 year-old Guillaume Latendresse Monday afternoon. Both players had struggled to acclimate to their NHL clubs after promising junior careers. Pouliot spent the majority of his professional career moving back and forth between Minnesota and the Wild's AHL affiliate in Houston. Pouliot had career highs in both games played, 37, and points, 11, in 2008-09 but never lived up to the billing of a fourth overall choice. Latendresse spent significantly more time in the NHL than Pouliot and scored 29, 27, and 26 points in his past three seasons. Latendresse is known as a player who is not afraid to play physically in the offensive zone, but his defense may be suspect. In case you haven't heard, Guillaume Latendresse has been traded to the Minnesota Wild. It has been a rough season for Latendresse, who has scored two goals and added an assist. Also, he didn't seem to be meshing with linemate Maxim Lapierre like he did last year. Also, the role of "Gui" on the team was very unclear. Was he supposed to be a scorer on the second line, or a grinder on the third line? These things were never apparent, and Latendresse's play too a hit because of that. Does this move come as a surprise? Definitely. Latendresse was supposed to be the next French-Canadian hero for the Habs, or at least that is the image that fan hype created for him. Advertised as a budding power forward who could score, the former second round pick in 2005 never met those expectations, although unfair. There are no sure things in the game of hockey...see Daigle, Alexandre. But there are some things worth taking a chance on, like in the case of the once again waived Andrew Ebbett. Ebbett didn`t really turn heads in Chicago, scoring just one goal in 10 games, but he wasn`t given much of an opportunity either as he was delegated to the fourth line most nights. While conditioning and drive may be questioned, his ability is not, as Ebbett is a gifted center that's play-making abilities rival that of Marc Savard. Which makes the Leafs' decision to pass on him once again on the waiver wire all that more puzzling. He may have been the perfect fit for Phil Kessel. The fact is the kid racked up 8 goals and 24 assists while taking a regular shift in 48 games last season for the Anaheim Ducks. And the thought throughout the league is that he is capable of more if he had the opportunity to play quality minutes with a top calibre goal scoring winger. Confidence is the heart and soul to any professional athlete; i'ts what makes them believe they can be the best, or the worst. Since his arrival in Minnesota, Martin Havlat has yet to show his true offensive fire-power we were hoping to see from his days in Chicago. Throughout the first 20 games, we have seen Havlat hesitant, on edge and definitely lacking confidence in his own game and the numbers prove it. With only two goals and six assists and a team worst -13 on the season, this is not the Martin Havlat the Wild signed nor the explosive forward the fans want to see. Watching every game film from this season compared to last season's overall play, a few conclusions can be made. 1. Low Confidence Havlat isn't confident not only in the team's changing game-play but also his own. After 20 of 82 games, the Minnesota Wild are in trouble. The team sits last in their division and 14th out of 15 teams in the Western Conference with seven wins and 16 points. The franchise will be broken up into forwards, defensemen, goalies, player development, coaching, and front office management and analyzed and assigned a letter grade at this point in the season. Forwards D+ Todd Richards' new system is very dependent on forwards getting deep into the zone and pressuring opposing teams into mistakes. There have been few occasions this season where Wild forwards have been able to effective accomplish this effectively. Richards' style is not the issue, the Wild seem to be able to effectively play this way against tired or flat opponents. There are signs of hope, but when the only positives are coming when opponents aren't at their best, it's generally a sign of a lack of talent. Coach Bruce Boudreau said Milan Jurcina will miss tonight's game against Minnesota and probably Saturday's game in New Jersey with a pulled muscle in his lower body. Boudreau also said Jeff Schultz will be a healthy scratch, so that means Tyler Sloan will return to the lineup. David Steckel's status, meantime, remains up in the air. Tampa Bay-Minnesota: Lightning Strikes Twice in the Third Period to Win Again

The Minnesota Wild came into to Tampa desperate to get onto the winning track that their players and fans alike expect from them. Through two periods of play, that seemed like a very good possibility for Minnesota, but there are three periods in hockey and The Lightning would strike twice to force an overtime and an eventual shootout. The first period saw Minnesota grab the 1-0 lead late in the period as Beniot Pouliot snuck a backhander past Anterro Nittymaki. The second period was dominated on the shot cart by Minnesota. The Wild out shot the Lightning 11-4 in the second frame, while Kim Jhonsson grew Minnesota's lead to two goals early in the second while in the power play. But as Minnesota's power play netted them a goal, it also cost them a goal as Steven Stamkos only five minutes later scored on Niklas Backstrom short handed to bring the Wild lead back to one.
