That was one of the reasons Gainey ship...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Montreal Canadiens, Guillaume Latendresse

With Guillaume Latendresse Gone, What Will Montreal Media Do Without Poster Boy?

posted by Rocket All Habs There is no denying that Guillaume Latendresse has enjoyed an extraordinary amount of media attention well in excess of what a player with his skills and his numbers would normally deserve. So, who is this player who received so much ink and broadcast time? Is he really one of the greats in Canadiens history? Are the rest of us just not seeing it? Latendresse has 48 goals and 37 assists for 85 points in 232 NHL games. Latendresse is one behind Charlie Sands and one ahead of Bert Corbeau on the Canadiens' all-time point list. Who? Sands was a diminutive center who wore No. 9 for the Habs from 1939-1943. Sands was the last player to wear the number before Rocket Richard arrived in 1943. Sands was born in Fort William, Ontario and was a solid two-way player—sorry, those words would never be used to describe Latendresse. Sands' 86 points were scored in just 159 games. Corbeau was a defenseman from Penetaguishene, Ontario who tallied 84 points in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Montreal Canadiens, Guillaume Latendresse

For Montreal Canadian Latendresse: The Fairy Tale has Ended

posted by Rocket All Habs It was the fall of 2008, and the Montreal Canadiens' training camp was all abuzz about the pre-season performance of a young power forward. He seemed to have all the tools: a unique blend of size, power, speed, and intensity. "He's been a nice surprise since the beginning of camp in the sense that he's adapted to every position and to every role we've assigned him," said coach Guy Carbonneau. This player was smart, gritty, initiated contact, and had a terrific shot. “He really understands the game, too. Sure he makes mistakes, but that’s normal at his age. We will definitely have a tough decision to make,” concluded Carbonneau. The coach was speaking about Max Pacioretty. The 19 year old Pacioretty was bringing an element to the Canadiens line-up that had not been seen for some time. It was truly an 'Emperor-has-no-clothes' moment. You see, we had been told that we already had a power forward, Guillaume Latendresse. It must be true because Gui had told us ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Montreal Canadiens, Guillaume Latendresse

The Minnesota Wild traded former first-round draft choice Benoit Pouliot to Montreal for left wing Guillaume Latendresse on Monday.

The 23-year-old Pouliot has been one of a handful of first-round disappointments for the Wild in recent years after being taken fourth overall in 2005. Defenseman A.J.

In case you haven't heard, Guillaume Latendresse has been traded to the Minnesota Wild.
It has been a rough season for Latendresse, who has scored two goals and added an assist. Also, he didn't seem to be meshing with linemate Maxim Lapierre like he did last year.
Also, the role of "Gui" on the team was very unclear. Was he supposed to be a scorer on the second line, or a grinder on the third line?
These things were never apparent, and Latendresse's play too a hit because of that. Does this move come as a surprise?
Definitely.
Latendresse was supposed to be the next French-Canadian hero for the Habs, or at least that is the image that fan hype created for him. Advertised as a budding power forward who could score, the former second round pick in 2005 never met those expectations, although unfair.
Keeping in mind that Latendresse is only in his third year as a Habs, this move would seem a bit premature. But had Bob Gainey lost his patience with his prospect? Perhaps, but it was slowly ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Montreal Canadiens, Guillaume Latendresse, Minnesota Wild

Is There Still a Place For "Goons" in the NHL Today?

The NHL has changed greatly over the years. Back in the '70s and '80s, hockey was more of a grind it out game and much more physical. Over the years, though, it has changed, and today it is more of a speed game.
The change has been brought upon by the new players to the game. Recently, many new players are coming over from Europe; these players bring much more skill to the game and less of the physical play, which in my opinion was a better thing for the NHL today.
With this change brings the question, is there still room in today's NHL for "goons"? A goon is usually defined as a player who has little skill and plays on the fourth line. He is out there to protect the star player for his team and get under the skin of the opposing players and get them off their games.
Looking back, there was once a time when these types of players were needed. In the '70s you had a huge amount of so-called goons. The Big Bad Bruins and Broad Street Bullies are names that come to mind. These two teams also had ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Montreal Canadiens

Injury Bug Bites Detroit Red Wings Again: Kronwall Sidelined Four to Eight Weeks

Call him what you want, but Nick Kronwall is one of the better defense man in the NHL. Kronwall, off to another decent start with 13 points (5 goals, 8 assists) will now miss up to two months because of a dirty hit by Montreal player Georges Laraque.
The question now is what do the Red Wings do? They have already lost Johan Franzen (ACL tear), Valterri Filppula (broken wrist) and Jason Williams (broken leg). How deep is this Red Wings team?
Yes, they have points in eight of 10 games. Yes, seven of those eight games have been wins; but a team can only be so deep. Having already lost other big names to free agency, (mainly Conklin, Hossa, Kopecky, Samuelsson, and Hudler) this Red Wings team is going to be tested over the next month.
Detroit will be without Filppula for at least another month. Williams will be out for at least another month. Franzen is out for another three months. Adding defenseman Andreas Lilja (week-to-week with concussion syndromes) to that list and losing Kronwall looks bad ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Detroit Red Wings, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Justin Abdelkader, Montreal Canadiens

Morning roundup: Injuries taking a toll

Tom Poti, left, is the latest Cap to suffer an injury. (John McDonnell/The Washington Post) As the injuries continue to pile up, the Capitals will have to see how much depth they have. The team could again be without seven players who were on the opening-night roster when they play the Senators at Scotiabank Place tonight: The recent rash of injuries has forced Coach Bruce Boudreau to put players in positions in which they're not completely comfortable (left wing Tomas Fleischmann struggled when he lined up as a right wing against Montreal), give significant ice time to rookies before they're ready for it, and lean more on others than he would like. (Mike Green, for example, skated a season-high 31 minutes 38 seconds against the Maple Leafs.) "You can't use it as an excuse because that makes it look like you're looking for a crutch," Boudreau said. "But there's

In Mike Cammalleri, Montreal Canadiens Have First True Goal-Scorer in Years

When I think of Mike Cammalleri, a few words come to mind: determination, speed, courage, power, and most of all, goals.
Cammalleri is the first natural goal-scorer the Canadiens have had in over a decade.
There simply hasn't been any one else with the goal-scoring prowess that the new member of the Habs possesses.
He has formed a dynamite first line with Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez, a line that is unfortunately falling apart due to injuries.
However, Cammalleri showed in yesterday's game against the Detroit Red Wings that he doesn't need his American linemates to score, as he potted both of his goals in Saturday's contest against the Detroit Red Wings on a line with Andrei Kostitsyn and Tomas Plekanec.
With a personal record of 39 goals last year, and with 11 goals so far this year, it's certainly within the realm of possibility that Cammalleri will surpass that record.
How long has it been that Habs fans have been able to talk about a player on their team with those kind of numbers? ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Montreal Canadiens, Michael Cammalleri, Detroit Red Wings
