With less than eight hours to go before his NHL debut, defenseman John Carlson stood in the dressing room at KCI this morning and joked about how he didn't get much sleep last night. But don't worry he said with a big smile, his relative lack of shut-eye won't be an issue on home ice tonight against the Montreal Canadiens. "I'll try to get as much as I can today," the 19 year old said when asked if he planned to squeeze in a nap. "I'm just happy right now, but I'm sure I'll be nervous. I just want to go out there and play with confidence." Carlson will be paired with Tom Poti, the most senior of the Caps' blueliners. Carlson, who grew up in New Jersey, said his father Richard, mother Angela and older brother Andrew will be in attendance. "I always believed that [veterans] are a steadying

Brendan Shanahan: 'It was just me, my dad and Stanley'

                    Larry Wigge

It's a warm and humid Saturday afternoon in early August 1997 in Toronto. The sky is cloudy. Weathermen are talking about the possibility of thunderstorms. But for Brendan Shanahan, it is the most peaceful time he has spent in months.

The fun-loving Red Wings left winger has relived the team's first Stanley Cup since 1955 every day in some way since Detroit swept Philadelphia on June 7 that year. Each player gets to spend time with the Cup -- and the loquacious Shanahan celebrates the championship with friends and acquaintances, raising it above his head in front of hundreds of people.

But that's just window dressing. Shanahan saves a special time for himself, the Cup and his father, Donal, who died of Alzheimer's disease in 1990. After arriving at his father's grave Aug. 9, Shanahan chokes on his words, he's so overcome with emotion:

"Dad, look what I've got."

"For a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Brendan Shanahan, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils

Shanahan: The shot, the summit and other things

Brendan Shanahan announced his retirement on Tuesday and immediately the speculation began over what he'll do next. He's already being hailed as a possible savior for the NHLPA, although it was the league, not the NHLPA, that announced his retirement. Maybe there's a spot waiting for him in the league offices.

But before looking too far ahead, let's take one last look back at the five things we'll remember most about Shanahan's remarkable 21-year career.

1. The shot
He wasn't a Brett Hull-type sniper, but Shanahan's quick release was one reason he was able to score 656 career goals, which puts him at 11th on the all-time list. He also scored 109 game-winning goals -- a total surpassed by only four NHL players.

"He had a great shot and he did a lot of things well," Dallas Stars forward Mike Modano told Sporting News. "He was tough, he scored goals, just a solid guy. He had a great career, pretty consistent by the numbers and he accomplished some great ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New Jersey Devils, Brendan Shanahan
