New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek is out for the season with a knee injury. The Islanders announced on Saturday that Martinek tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Friday night in the third period of a 2-1 loss at New Jersey. The oft-injured defenseman was helped off the ice with about 5:45 to play after he was hit hard against the boards in front of the Devils bench by Zach Parise.

A few quick updates: The Caps have placed Alex Ovechkin, who is still nursing a strain near his left shoulder, on injured reserve to make room for Eric Fehr on the roster. Ovechkin could, however, still return Wednesday against the Isles. Mike Green and Jeff Schultz, who both left last night's game with injuries, will be game-time decisions tonight against Florida at Verizon Center. Also, Shaone Morrisonn seems to have avoided a suspension for boarding Kenndal McArdle late in the third period against the Panthers. Coach Bruce Boudreau said that Morrisonn was put on probation at the end of last season and couldn't receive a major penalty in the Capitals' first 15 or 20 games -- he wasn't sure which -- but the league hasn't taken any disciplinary action yet. Ryan Miller wanted nothing more then to put last Saturday night's 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the New York Islanders behind him. Tonight as the scene shifted back to Western New York, Miller and company came out and played with a purpose for 60 minutes. The result: a 3-0 beat down of the Islanders and former Buffalo goaltender Martin Biron. Since leaving the Sabres, Biron has virtually owned the Buffalo Sabres, winning consistently with either team he has played for since his departure from the Sabres in 2006. But tonight was Buffalo's night as forward Derek Roy got the monkey off his back, netting his first goal of the year. And Thomas Vanek contributed to the offense as well, as he followed in Roy's footsteps and netted one of his own. The game was as complete of a game as Buffalo has played in probably two full seasons. Admit it. As an Islanders' fan right now, you must be ecstatic. When was the last time this team won four games in a row? Even more than that, when was the last time you had confidence in this team to win games? Last season it was always a hope, but that hope usually faded by the third period. That trend carried over into the beginning of the season, but since the New York Islanders defeated the rival Rangers 3-1 one week ago, they have looked like a better team. The Islanders have scored 15 goals in the past week, while only giving up five. But not only that, they are getting production from a whole host of players. First off, the real surprise of the season has been the play of winger Matt Moulson.
