Del Zotto & Leetch: Have we met?

If you need a reminder of just how young Michael Del Zotto is, we were talking after the game about growing up watching Brian Leetch play - and he meant in Toronto. Del Zotto was just 13 years old when the Ranger great was dealt to his hometown Maple Leafs on March 3, 2004 - but tonight, it was the youngster who impressed the legend with a first-period goal, a solo rush that began backskating at center ice, ended scoring from the left circle and channeled a bit a Leetch. “Did he?” Del Zotto said, eyes brightening. “That’s awesome.”

Del Zotto, it turned out, added that he had never met Leetch, though that was unlikely to be the case for long. “He’s one guy I’ve always wanted to meet,” Del Zotto said. “When he played for Toronto for that little bit, watching him there, it was unbelievable just to watch him. I hope I ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New York Rangers

Higgins rises as Drury closes in

Next up on left wing alongside Vinny Prospal and Marian Gaborik will be Christopher Higgins, who has been filling in at center as the Rangers deal with their injuries but will move up against Columbus tonight at the Garden. As discussed in earlier posts, Higgins has looked much stronger since his early-season struggles but still has only two goals in 21 games as a Ranger, though Tortorella offered this stat today: according to the coaching staff’s count, Gaborik leads the team with 28 scoring chances 5-on-5, while Higgins is second with 24. “Maybe it’ll kickstart Higgy into scoring a couple goals,” the coach said of the move, because while he is getting opportunities for himself, “he just isn’t scoring; I don’t know what else to say there.”

While Higgins said it would be counterproductive to alter his own game playing with Prospal and Gaborik, he also said this of his approach tonight: “Just keep getting them the pucks, they seem to be doing ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New York Rangers, Marian Gaborik, Christopher Higgins, Chris Drury

Kotes too cold for Torts

Ales Kotalik’s audition with the Rangers’ top duo of Marian Gaborik and Vinny Prospal appears to be a one-and-done affair, because John Tortorella didn’t exactly care for it: “I don’t think he can play there, I don’t think he can play with the top two guys,” the coach said of the winger who will make $3 million this season and in each of the next two. “Kotes is fighting it. I don’t think there was enough puck battles won, he’s having a problem getting his shots through, you get a setup at the end of the game and his stick breaks. I don’t think he can play there, so we gotta figure out something else.”

Kotalik played 17:50 and Tortorella said the reason he kept him with that top unit was because he liked how the other two lines were going, which had a lot to do with the play of Sean Avery and Christopher Higgins. Higgins appears to me to be a different player than the one who slogged through the first 14 games of the season ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New York Rangers, Marian Gaborik

Now that this year's Ranger power play has eased back to Earth following a blistering start to the season, John Tortorella believes one of the answers to its struggles may lie in 19-year-old rookie Michael Del Zotto.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, John Tortorella, New York Rangers

Drury may be closer; Kotalik moves up

Sounds as though Chris Drury is improving and may be inching his way toward a return - the Ranger captain is to be examined this afternoon by a team neurologist and if all goes well could cross a major hurdle toward rejoining the lineup.

John Tortorella said he hasn’t spoken with Drury but did talk with trainer Jim Ramsay this morning and that “I guess (Drury) has had a number of good days here, so he’s gonna go see the doctor and we’ll see where the next step is from there.” (So you DO talk to trainers before meeting the media! J’accuse!) Drury is 12 days removed from the concussion he suffered in Calgary on a blindside hit from Curtis Glencross. For the record, Glencross is already back; he served his three-game suspension for the hit and returned to the Flames on Tuesday to play against Colorado.

Meanwhile, the 20 skaters who were in practice today had themselves a healthy workout in what some players described as the Rangers’ hardest practice since ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New York Rangers

Morning roundup: Semin sidelined

(Toni L. Sandys/The Washington Post) An MRI exam on Alexander Semin's right wrist did not reveal any structural damage, but the winger is listed as day to day (don't you love that term?) and GM George McPhee said it's unclear when he'll return. "The wrist got sore [but] it's not from a blow or anything," McPhee said. "He just tweaked it." Alex Ovechkin returned to the lineup Tuesday and helped the Capitals to a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers, but with Semin sidelined, they are now without four forwards from the opening night roster. Mike Knuble (broken finger), Boyd Gordon (sore back) and Quintin Laing (broken jaw) are also out. Semin, who is listed as day to day, is believed to have been injured when he was hit by a Florida player as he unleashed a wrist shot Nov. 6. He played through the injury because the

Laing was hurt in Tuesday's win over the New York Rangers. He had metal plates inserted into his jaw during surgery.

Semin missed the Rangers game and was wearing a brace on his wrist Wednesday.

(Bruce Bennett/Getty Images) Matt Bradley got into a fight that left him with a gash over his left eye in the first period, then scored the go-ahead goal in the Caps' 4-2 win over the Rangers last night at Madison Square Garden. Oh yeah, and Alex Ovechkin returned: Ovechkin also tallied on Tuesday in his anticipated return from a six-game absence with an injury, but it was Bradley's clutch, Ovechkin-like goal that everyone was toasting in the visitors' dressing room at Madison Square Garden afterward. "Bradley was our MVP of the night," said defenseman Brian Pothier, whose empty-net goal with 17 seconds left clinched the win. "His fight changed the momentum of the game and scores the goal that seals the deal for us. Every time he had the puck he was doing something with it. And when he didn't have it, he was hitting someone. He was great

Caps 4, Rangers 2

The night was supposed to belong to Alex Ovechkin. Instead, it belonged to Matt Bradley. As I wrote in my gamer story (which can be found here), Bradley was the Capitals' catalyst in a 4-2 victory over the Rangers tonight. The fourth line winger scored the winner and suffered a pretty bad gash over his left eye in afight with Aaron Voros. But, as I mentioned in an earlier post, it was Quintin Laing's face that got the really bad beating tonight. Laing, if you have not seen the update, suffered a broken jaw when he went down and blocked a shot with his face in the third period. For those keeping score at home, Laing has now suffered a torn spleen, contracted swine flu and sustained a broken jaw in the past in nine months. (He also walks with a permanent limp, presumably from blocking all those shots).

Tonight's lineup: Caps at Rangers

Semyon Varlamov will start in goal in Alex Ovechkin's return to the Caps' lineup tonight at Madison Square Garden. Henrik Lundqvist, meantime, will get the nod for the Rangers. Alexander Semin is out with what's believed to be a right wrist injury, which means minor league call-up Jay Beagle is in. Michal Neuvirth will be on the bench because Jose Theodore is back in Arlington tending to a personal matter. The rest of the Caps' scrambled lineup should look like this: Forwards Ovechkin-Backstrom-Clark Fleischmann-Morrison-Laich Perreault-Steckel-Fehr Laing-Beagle-Bradley Scratches: Semin, Gordon (back). Defense Morrisonn-Green Schultz-Poti Erskine-Pothier Scratches: Jurcina (IR), Sloan (healthy) Goalies Varlamov Neuvirth I'll have more after the game.

Semin sent home to see doctor

The Caps have gained one Russian winger and lost another. Alex Ovechkin will return against the Rangers tonight, but Alexander Semin was sent home to Arlington to see a doctor, Coach Bruce Boudreau said. Although the Caps are officially calling Semin day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, it's pretty obvious that he's got a bad right wrist. He appeared to suffer the injury last week against Florida when he was hit by Keith Ballard as he unleashed a shot, and has been wearing a tight wrap around it ever since. The winger played through the wrist injury (and other bumps and bruises) while Ovechkin was out, but apparently the wrist was not improving. It's unclear how much time he'll miss. The Caps don't play again until Friday.

Ovechkin's ready; Naslund returns in Sweden

From the Caps’ morning skate today: Alex Ovechkin has tested the ice and the body at the Garden this morning and everything appears set for the superstar’s return to the Capitals’ lineup for tonight’s game, even if no one wants to make it official. For a guy who plays the game with as much enthusiasm as anyone in the sport, he may begin tonight’s game as if he’s been shot out of a cannon - which is actually what worries Caps coach Bruce Boudreau.

“I’m excited to come back,” Ovechkin said after taking the morning skate at MSG. “It’s going to be a pretty cool moment. I’m just excited to come back and play hockey, not practice.”

“I know he’s missed it because he loves playing,” Boudreau said. “When he plays in this building he gets pretty excited. I’m just afraid of him doing too much too early.”

Ovechkin has missed the last six games with a strained left shoulder, the longest ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New York Rangers, Alexander Ovechkin
