Sabres-Leafs: No New Year's Hangover for Buffalo in 4-1 Victory

With far too many bad memories of recent Buffalo Sabres games burned into the fans' minds, it was only forward thinking that would have thought the Sabres would be suffering from New Year's hangover tonight versus the Toronto Maple Leafs.
But the Sabres eased the pain for fans tonight in a 4-1 trouncing of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The first period saw very little in the way of action. Buffalo and Toronto both looked like teams that had come off a three-week break and were trying to find their legs.
But the second period was a far cry from resembling the first period in any way. Buffalo exploded for three goals in the period and left the Leafs in the dust.
After an Ian White hooking call, Buffalo's newest whipping boy, Jason Pominville, got the Sabres on the board with a one-timer from the point that found its way past goaltender Curtis Joseph.
About two minutes later, Derek Roy added to Buffalo's lead by beating Joseph with a slapshot. That would prove to be the game winner, but ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ian White, Ryan Miller, Jason Pominville

Sabres Welcome New Year with Win Over Leafs

The Buffalo Sabres celebrated the New Year by turning over a new leaf and exhibiting an energy level which had been absent in their previous five games. In the process, they scored a convincing 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Most noticeable was the Sabres' forechecking. While the game was still in doubt in the first two periods, the Buffalo forwards kept consistent pressure on Toronto's defenseman, bodychecking, rotating their forwards, and even pinching with their own defensemen on occasion.
Even though the Sabres were dominating play, the score remained tied late in the first period. All of Buffalo's strong effort could have been for naught when, after a Maple Leafs flurry of shots, the puck lay dangerously exposed in the crease, forcing Sabres' center Derek Roy to use his hand to sweep the puck away, resulting in a penalty shot being called against Buffalo.
Toronto winger Niklas Hagman skated in on Sabres netminder Ryan Miller, but Miller foiled Hagman's attempt with ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, Derek Roy, Ryan Miller, Lindy Ruff
