The Rangers blasted out of the gate again this year to the top spot in the league, and have now sunk out of playoff position and are tied with the Islanders for the lowest point total in the Atlantic division I previously wrote that Rangers need to dismiss GM Glen Sather. This team has shown they can win, but need a spark. They look lifeless and heartless. There's only a 50 percent effort through most of their games. On Friday in Tampa, the Rangers were hammered 5-1 and then 8-3 on Saturday in Pittsburgh. The Lightning came out and walked all over the Rangers for 60 minutes. On Saturday, the Rangers scored first and remained in the game, trailing by one through the start of the third period, then the Penguins scored four straight in the final period. This team doesn't look like it has any...well, any anything. At this point, I don't believe the Rangers have any chance of winning the Stanley Cup this year. After a disappointing 5-1 loss in Tampa Bay last night, a game which head coach John Tortorella called the worst of the season, the Rangers get back to work right away as they play the Penguins in Pittsburgh tonight. Tonight's game is the first of a home and home series with the defending champs as the two teams play Monday night at the Garden. While we are only going into December, the standings in the Eastern Conference are already very important, as only five points separate fifth place from 13th place. For every game the Rangers lose, there is another team with a similar number of points that will get a win on that day. You get nights light these with a team still trying to figure it out. In a 3-1 loss to a team the Lightning need to learn to squash, Tampa Bay was beaten soundly. It happens in an 82 game schedule, you'll have an off night or two. Even the Penguins have clunkers. For a young hockey team like the Lightning, every single opportunity at two points is crucial. On this night, against the 5-12-5 Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay's top players decided to take a vacation and watched two of those precious standings points disappear. Alex Tanguay, Steven Stamkos, and Ryan Malone had two shots on goal between them. Road No Longer Unkind for the Tampa Bay Lightning

As the 2009-10 season began for the Tampa Bay Lightning, the road was not kind to the Bolts. In their first five road games, the Lightning managed no victories and only one point. Since the horrid start, the Lightning have turned it around on the road and are now on a 3-0-1 string, garnering seven of a possible eight points in their last four away from the St. Pete Times Forum. Improved goaltending on the road has certainly helped. Antero Niittymaki and Mike Smith have combined for 1.5 goals against in the last four road games, after giving up an abysmal 5.0 goals per game in the first five. The Lightning have also begun to light the lamp much more consistently, raising their road goals total to 2.75 per game from 1.58. Antero Niittymaki has been a major force behind the turn around.
