Slats: We have enough at center

Glen Sather is up here in Toronto for Brian Leetch’s Hall of Fame induction tonight, and said his plan is to sit tight with his roster and let the current crop fill the holes at center. With Chris Drury and Brandon Dubinsky injured in Saturday night’s game in Calgary, and Vinny Prospal capable of playing center, Sather pointed to Christopher Higgins as a player who should be able to step in while the natural centers heal - at least for a little while.

“Higgins has played center before, he’s perfectly capable of doing it,” the president/GM said as he made his way to the auditorium. “You’re better off letting your people have an opportunity and see what they can do, and if they can’t do it then we’ll look to make a deal.”

Our Peter Botte also has some experience at center, but today, the Yankees’ victory champagne presumably out of his hair, he covered practice up in Greenburgh and reported Chris Drury working out on a stationary ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, New York Rangers, Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky, Toronto Maple Leafs

Brian Burke's Fuzzy Picture Starts To Come Into Focus?

I am a huge Toronto Maple Leafs Fan. Really, I'm like 6'2" tall and 225lbs!
I was less than enthused when I heard Brian Burke was coming to town, it isn't really that I dis-liked the man, but he had the aura of a cocky young business exec who was trying to climb the corporate ladder and would probably eat his young on the way up.
I don't like people like that!, and he's got ridiculous hair (of course, that may be jealousy speaking).
The fact of the matter is, this is not his first kick at the can when it come to building a contender, say what you want about the man, he's here for a reason.
Brian Burke knows what it takes to do the job, and is getting used to life in the pressure cooker that is Leaf Nation .
After the return of Phill Kessel, and getting 10 out of a possible 14 points in the last seven games, including, their first three wins of the season, things are starting to look good for the boys in blue.
You can go all the way back to October 17 against the Rangers if you are ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Brian Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs

The 29-year-old right winger was on the ice for several minutes before being helped to the dressing room.

Williams was off to a relatively slow start with two goals and seven points through 14 games, but was still fifth on the team in scoring.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto-Carolina: Second Win There for the Taking

By Louis "King of Roncesvalles" Pisano
Toronto will be facing a Carolina team that some predicted to be in the hunt for the playoffs this year and at this point, Carolina is just hoping to get off the slide they’ve been on. The Hurricanes actually are below the Leafs in conference standings yet with the same mere seven points, though the Leafs have a game in hand.
As we have seen the problems continue to mount for this Carolina team that beat the Bruins in seven games before falling four straight to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Penguins in last year’s playoffs.
Toronto showed that they are battling tooth and nail for points and have gotten them in five straight games, though have lost three in OT and one in a shootout.
With Phil Kessel in the line up and the goal tending tandem of Gustavsson and Toskala healthy the Leafs should be primed to win a few games and none better than tonight against this struggling Carolina team.
Without their leader Eric Staal and veteran Ray Whitney this ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes

What Do Kessel, Wilson, Gustavsson, and Back to Back Wins Have in Common?

Yeah...I don't know either!
I'm just kidding, this weekend promises to be a great weekend in Leaf land! Playing two games in two nights is always a test for any team, however, Friday's game is against a dismal Hurricane team that has only one more win than the Leafs (that was before Stall was hurt). Next up are the Detroit Red Wings . Who are obviously a little tired and beat up, after playing nine preseason games in 12 nights, traveling to Sweden, and going on a five game road trip for 11 days.
"I knew all this before it started, but what do you do? Do you tell them it's going to be tough? Who cares?" said Coach Babcock in a recent interview.
Phil Kessel will start his second game in a Leafs jersey, and after putting a career high 10 shot on net vs the Lightning , there is a lot of reason for optimism. Although now, former line mate, Matt Stajan is quick to admit there is a lot of pressure to perform it the Big Smoke, he says it won't come from the team.
Hopefully he doesn't ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Phil Kessel, Jeff Finger, Toronto Maple Leafs, Jason Blake, Garnet Exelby

Speed Won't Kill Leafs, But It Might Not Help Either

Ron Wilson has tried just about every coaching technique at his disposal to get the Leafs going.
His latest plan? Speed.
Wilson inserted John Mitchell into Toronto's "top" line, putting the fast Mitchell between the quick Jason Blake and the speedy Phil Kessel.
Speed is an important strategy in hockey, but also one of the more misunderstood ones.
Speed for the sake of speed doesn't mean anything in and of itself. Games are won on the number of goals scored. There are no points awarded for the fastest forward on the ice.
So let's look ahead to Wilson's new speed line. He has his top line on the ice and they've caught an opposing team in a change. There's a three-on-one for Toronto crossing into the offensive zone.
The lone opposing defenseman sees three Leafs flying down the ice at him: Kessel, who finished last season with 36 goals, but is just returning from an injury; Blake, who has one goal on the season; and Mitchell, who also has no goals on the season. Who does Wilson think the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Phil Kessel, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ron Wilson, Jason Blake

Malone tapped in an awkward shot that bounced over Jonas Gustavsson moments after John Mitchell nearly won it for the Maple Leafs on a pretty rush, with the puck nearly taking another funny hop into the goal.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ryan Malone

Kessel could debut
Assuming he passes a few last tests on his surgically repaired shoulder, Phil Kessel is expected to make his long-awaited Toronto Maple Leafs debut tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning. They need him. "He's an opportunistic player. He's a good skater, he's got good speed. He'll do well there," Kessel's former teammate Mark Recchi told Sporting News. "I don't know who he'll play with, but you get him a centerman who gets him the puck and he can play." According to the Toronto Star, that center will be Matt Stajan, although head coach Ron Wilson told the paper that nothing is locked in. "It's a big experiment for now," Wilson said. "We'll see how it goes, game by game, shift by shift."
Rare homecoming for Thomas
It's been a few years since Boston goalie Tim Thomas played in his home state of Michigan and the ticket demands this time around are ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Phil Kessel, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Anaheim Ducks

Takin' a T/O With BT: 10 Bright Spots for the Toronto Maple Leafs

In Theoren Fleury's book Playing with Fire , Fleury goes on record saying that he would've liked playing in Toronto, except for one thing.
The media.
According to Theo, and this is very apt, the media always keys on a low-point for the team. They could have won 16-straight and there would be something to find a problem with.
So, with the team at an all-time low, why not look for a few positives? And what better time than after they've gotten out of a putrid month?

  1. The Power Play
Currently, the power play for the Toronto Maple Leafs is the top-ranked in the league, which is kind of surprising as they've had a few problems scoring (14 of their 30 goals have been on the power play this year).
Whats even more impressive is that they've actually been better on the road with the man-advantage, clicking 30 percent of the time.

  2. Put the Puck on Net
Granted bad shots don't get you many places in the league, but they can sometimes get you somewhere. So far, that hasn't ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tomas Kaberle

Commanding Respect: Thomas Kaberle Deserving Of Leafs Captaincy

Thomas Kaberle has never been one to complain during his career in Toronto. He's been here through the bad times, and the really bad times, and has simply stuck to his game.
He has been rumored in dozens of trades over the past three seasons, criticized for his lack of physicality, and constantly heckled for not shooting the puck enough.
Fans cried for him to be shipped out of town for the past two seasons, and on various occasions, he was all-but-gone. Yet the Leafs were never able to see a trade through.
He has never been given the respect that he deserves and is regularly blamed as having a role in the Leafs downfall.
And through all that, he shows up every night and is consistently the most important defender on the team.
Well, this season we're starting to see that he might just be the most important defender in the league for his team. Without Kaberle leading the way, the Leafs terrible start to the season might just be down right indescribable.
His 17 points (2 G, 15 A) not only ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs
