Ian White: Favorite For Captain

Ian White is developing into one of this leagues best defenders.
He has 12 points and is a +5 to lead the Leafs in that department. On a team that to date this season has been outscored by a margin of 76-53, being a +5 in and of itself is impressive.
White was drafted in 2002 by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the sixth round, 191st overall.
In 261 regular season games over his four NHL seasons, White has 91 points , is a career +12, and has only 171 penalty minutes (including that...questionable call vs the Caps).
White has also won a silver medal with Canada's World Juniors in 2002-2003 and was named the WHL's most sportsmanlike player in 2001-2002. During the 2005-2006 season, White was named Captain of Team Canada for the Spengler Cup.
Not to mention the fact that the man can grow quite the mouth brow!
If there were a contest for the Captaincy, the way I see it, there are really only two viable candidates.
Ian White impresses me more the more I watch him. He ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Ian White, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tomas Kaberle, Mats Sundin

Maple Leafs 2, Caps 1 (SO)

Reaction to tonight's humbling 2-1 shootout loss to the lowly Leafs was all over the place in the visitors' dressing room at Air Canada Centre. Coach Bruce Boudreau said his players looked worn out, a combination of playing on back to back nights and performing under the strain of so many injuries. It would be hard to argue with him. Then there was captain Chris Clark, who was annoyed about his team's second straight flat start and its inconsistent effort from shift to shift, period to period, against the league's worst team. Again, it would be hard to argue with him. Both, in my opinion, have valid points. But the Leafs? Really? With an early flight to Ottawa in a few hours, I'm going to keep things brief tonight. If you haven't already, check out my game story here and then come on back for a few notes that

A Sure Bet: Leafs Should Have Taken a Gamble on Andrew Ebbett

There are no sure things in the game of hockey...see Daigle, Alexandre.
But there are some things worth taking a chance on, like in the case of the once again waived Andrew Ebbett.
Ebbett didn`t really turn heads in Chicago, scoring just one goal in 10 games, but he wasn`t given much of an opportunity either as he was delegated to the fourth line most nights.
While conditioning and drive may be questioned, his ability is not, as Ebbett is a gifted center that's play-making abilities rival that of Marc Savard.
Which makes the Leafs' decision to pass on him once again on the waiver wire all that more puzzling.
He may have been the perfect fit for Phil Kessel.
The fact is the kid racked up 8 goals and 24 assists while taking a regular shift in 48 games last season for the Anaheim Ducks.
And the thought throughout the league is that he is capable of more if he had the opportunity to play quality minutes with a top calibre goal scoring winger.
It may be that GM Brian Burke likes to shy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs, Anaheim Ducks, Phil Kessel, Minnesota Wild

Tonight's lineup: Caps at Maple Leafs

Seymon Varlamov will start in goal tonight at Air Canada Center, where the banged up Caps try to take two points from the NHL's worst team. Vesa Toskala, meanwhile, is expected to be in net for the Maple Leafs. Out for Washington are: Alexander Semin (wrist), Mike Knuble (broken finger), Boyd Gordon (back), Quintin Laing (broken jaw), Milan Jurcina (groin), Tom Poti (upper body) and Shaone Morrisonn (concussion). Considering all that, the rest of the Caps' patchwork lineup should look like this: Forwards Ovechkin-Backstrom-Laich Fleischmann-Morrison-A. Gordon Clark-Perreault-Fehr Steckel-Beagle-Bradley Defense Schultz-Green Erskine-Pothier Sloan-Carlson Goalies Varlamov Theodore I'll have more after the game.

Tom Poti left tonight's game early in the second period with an upper-body injury. The Caps won't comment on the nature or extent of the ailment, other than to say that the defenseman is day to day. Coach Bruce Boudreau said the Caps would likely need to recall someone from Hershey. Boudreau also said he doesn't expect Alexander Semin to make tomorrow's road trip to Toronto.

With any hope of making the playoffs this year fading faster than a three goal lead, let's take a look ahead at what could be on the horizon for our beloved Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Leafs have some "cornerstones" in place with Phil Kessel locked up for the foreseeable future, along with Nazim Kadri , Viktor Stalberg , Jiri Tlusty , and Nikolai Kulemin . The next couple of years could see remarkable changes in Leaf Land.
Overall, the game is moving both backward and forward at the same time. With the elimination of clutching and grabbing and more open ice, small "power" forwards, will once again be the mainstay of most teams.
With that being said, we should also see the re-emergence of the "stay at home" type of defenseman to a degree. With the speed and quickness of opposing forwards, the Leafs, as it stands right now, are ill equipped.
The Leafs' future on defense doesn't hold as much potential as the forward core. The emergence of Luke Schenn ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs

Are The Bruins Starting To Question Trading Phil Kessel

The Boston Bruins have hit the quarter point of the season.
They are sitting with a decent record of 8-8-4, but everyone knows if they keep this up they will not have a shot come playoff time.
One of the most talked about stories of the offseason was what were the Bruins going to do about Phil Kessel. The young winger had just led the Bruins in goals scored with 36 and was their best offensive threat.
He was about to become a free agent, though, and something had to be done about him. The Bruins could either sign him to a deal which would make it hard for them to sign other players or they could deal Kessel and hope to get something good in return.
