A confession about my newspaper-reading habits. Even in
tough times–actually, especially in tough times–I immediately open to
the sports section, trying to avoid the headlines screaming about the world’s problems. But lately, basketball news hasn’t provided a refuge from stories about stagflation and the dollar’s drop.

As I touched on yesterday, the Cardinals are
all over the rumor mill - especially when it
comes to left-handed relievers. That’s no surprise, considering Ron Villone (1-2, 4.75 ERA) and Randy Flores (1-0, 4.95 ERA) have been less than impressive.

Before I let my giddiness get the best
of me, here is a disclaimer. I know that
the Cardinals current five-game winning streak has come against the lowly Pirates and Padres and that the rest of this month’s schedule (four at home with Milwaukee, three on the road against the Mets and four on the road against the Braves) will be a much better gauge of how good this team really is.

My calendar tells me it’s mid-July, the dog
days of summer. In the sports world, that means
baseball’s trade deadline is right around the corner, NFL training camps will be popping up any day now, and the Olympics begin in only a few weeks. We just finished watching a historic NBA Finals, a classic Wimbledon final, and a never-ending MLB All-Star game.

While David Beckham is most likely enjoying a
romantic honeymoon with French footballer Zinedine Zidane, it was
Landon Donovan who got the shaft at the 2008 ESPY awards. Who am I to question the great and powerful ESPYs? While David Beckham is likely the prettiest player in the MLS (as evident by the ESPY nod), I don’t think you can hand over the Best Player award to Becks so casually

The deliciously 10-games-over-.500 Redbirds continue to surprise -
just ask anyone in the media. I’m beginning to
believe that literally no one expected this, at least no one that has come forward yet. Even the hometown media is befuddled by St. Louis’ 53-43 first half.

itself for a mid-summer charge and stands unfazed by
the oppressive swelter of the annual Midwest “Humidity Fest.” It is truly that wretched time of year when a majority of the country falls victim to brutally high dew points and even the most adamant of narcissists shudder in ...

to mind? Chevy Chase trekking across the country in

The 2010 World Cup has been scheduled to
take place in South Africa, but as of late
FIFA has made it clear that that they do have a plan B . They say it’s necessary in case of a natural disaster, but it’s most likely because South Africa is having problems dealing with rampant crime, stadiums that are being delayed , and the possibility of random power outages.

It’s been a rough week for the Wizard.
Sleep has been difficult, with all the nightmares of
a Brewers v Cubs NLCS (or, worse yet, a Cubs v Red Sox World Series). But no worries, because there is a ray of hope. Wait, what’s that, no ray of hope? Ohhhh, well at least there are links.

Last week were reminded that sports are nothing
more than a business. Elton Brand supposedly had an
agreement to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers, only to sign a five-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. Some people were shocked, but they shouldn’t have been. Remember, it’s a business.

Asshat, schrutebag, jerk, dick, jackass, idiot, dunce, scumbag.
Even though I’ve been listening to “ The Herd
” for a couple years, I never knew what a super guy Colin Cowherd was until I started researching the great beyond — this thing called the Internet — where I found all the lovely pet names for ESPN’s superhero of court jesters.
