The Myth of the "Stupid" Footballer

A couple of years ago I was engaged in a discussion with several friends on a certain footballer. Said player happened to be about the only footballer these people had heard of. Of course, he is none other than the much maligned and criticized, David Beckham.
It ended up being more of an argument than a discussion. I tried to explain what I thought was the importance of physical intelligence; the idea of mental capacity being transferred from a bookish knowledge into physical knowledge.
I have always had a major problem with those who seek to simplify the exploits of a highly skilled sportsman into the category of instinctual and genetic inheritance.
This could very well become a piece about any sport, but as I am a participant in and a follower of football, I will devote this article to football and footballers.
I am of the mind that any footballer who reaches the higher realms of sporting achievement not only has an above average intellect but also demonstrates and exercises ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Soccer, David Beckham, Arsenal, Premiership, FIFA

MLS Roundtable: What Should MLS Do To Increase Its Image On The World Stage

While the Premier League in England is experiencing continued growth, another little league is trying to doing the same. Major League Soccer has grown from a fledgling league to an improved league in a little over 10 years. Yet, MLS has continually struggled on the international stage. What should it do to improve? In his second MLS roundtable, Thomas brought in fellow MLS community leader Joe Guarr , World Football community leader Salaar Arshad Shamsi , and a regular MLS and world football contributor, Eric Gomez , to discuss what Major League Soccer should do to increase its image on the international stage.

Thomas: This year alone, MLS clubs have won only one international competition - the New England Revolution won the SuperLiga. In the innagural CONCACAF Champions League, only two MLS clubs have made it to the group stages of the original four clubs - DC United and Houston Dynamo. DCU currently sit at the bottom of their group with no points and the Dynamo sit ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Soccer, Major League Soccer, Houston Dynamo, David Beckham, D.C.
Sky Sports to Lose Premier League Rights To ESPN In 2009?

The Premiership is the most lucrative football league on the globe, right?
So it will come as no surprise that television companies across the world are currently lining up to bid hundreds of millions, in order to broadcast the games when the rights hit the market in January 2009. But will a successful bid by ESPN be the final nail in a rotting coffin that will demonstrate the globalisation of a league that has already lost it's identity?
Since BSkyB's acquisition of the Premier League rights in 1990, their sports orientated channel Sky Sports has played an enormous role in the commercialisation of British football. They have arguably played the biggest part in making the Premiership the most popular football league on the planet today.
Who can ignore their extravagant themed advertisements for football matches, which somehow appear to have equal significance to a battle in a roman coliseum. Inteligently engineerd phrases like "Ford Super Sunday" are a prime example of just how ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Soccer, ESPN, Premiership, England, David Beckham, Major League Soccer

The 10 Most Overrated Footballers

 10. Cristian Panucci (Roma, Serie A)
Not the best right-back or center-back in Italy and he never was the best, even at his peak. Panucci is not the most reliable of defenders, yet he still gets a lot of undeserved attention.
Panucci was a player in the Italian squad in Euro 2004 and Euro 2008 in two tournaments very disappointing showings for Italy. Ironically, he was absent from the Italian squad in 2006 when Italy won the World Cup.
 9. Sergio Almiron (Fiorentina, on loan from Juventus, Serie A)
After a good run in Empoli's first team, scoring impressive long-range efforts, Almiron moved to Juventus. However, he formed one of the worst midfield partnerships in the history of Serie A with Tiago Mendes before they both turned into bench warmers for the rest of the season. Almiron did absolutely nothing in his time at Juventus and is currently playing on loan at Fiorentina.

'Alex Ferguson is the best manager I've ever had at this level. Well, he's the only manager I've actually had at this level. But he's the best manager I've ever had'.

Why I Love This Beautiful Game Part 3: Year Round Play

I will be the first to tell you that I am not a huge fan of the MLS. I started watching the beautiful game and saw nothing but European teams to start out with. This spoiled the hell out of me.
The MLS is almost always touted in serious football circles as being a pansy league. Even with David Beckham trying to change that, it is unlikely that the MLS will ever reach greath heights in the states, let alone worldwide.
You know what I figured out that I like about MLS though? It's on during the summer. When the rest of Europe is taken a holiday from the sport. I get a game that has seen its level of quality increase slowly over the last five years.
It isn't La Liga, the EPL, or even the Australian leagues, but it is a perfect reprieve to having football in the off months.
That is a truly beautiful thing. There is always some incarnation of the beautiful game on at some time during the year. Granted most of it is on during the fall to spring, there is still football on.

When asked about his experience with Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco during July's All-Star Game, it was clear Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham respected Blanco but knew little about him on a personal level.
