SURPRISE, Ariz. | If there was any doubt before, there isn’t now. Things are going be different for the Royals under new manager Trey Hillman. It didn’t matter Thursday that Ryan Shealy had just hit a game-ending homer for a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Surprise Stadium. Or that the Royals had just won their fourth game in a row. Or even that it’s just ... [link]

Public Reprimand
Published 3/7/2008 by StatsGuru at Baseball Musings
Trey Hillman very publicly reminded his team how to run the bases after their win today: Hillman had seen too many base-running mistakes earlier in the game. His solution was to gather the entire team at the plate for what amounted to a 15-minute lecture in full view of the Diamondbacks and the departing crowd of 5,539. Hillman then spent another 10 minutes in discussion with veteran second baseman Mark Grudzielanek near third base before initiating his postgame news conference at the dugout. "I was just talking about running the bases," Hillman told reporters. "We had a ...

Hillman Pulls Royals Back Onto the Field For Extra Drills

One question I had going into the 2008 season was whether Trey Hillman would attempt to bring a Japanese baseball style of managing back to America. And if he did, how would the modern American ballplayer take to it? Looks like my question might have been asnwered: It didn’t matter Thursday that Ryan Shealy had just hit a game-ending homer for a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Surprise Stadium. Or that the Royals had just won their fourth game in a row. Or even that it’s just spring training. Hillman had seen too many base-running ...

Lollygaggers!

... I CAN'T HEEEER YOU!! New Royals manager Trey Hillman's displeasure with the way his team ran the bases resulted in a 10-minute lecture -- in full view of both the public and yesterday's opponent, the Diamondbacks -- at home plate immediately after the game. (Kansas City Star) The drill-sergeant routine -- enormously popular with fans with fans and some portions of the media, not so with players -- has gone the way of the straw hat in baseball, so it'll be interesting to see how the Royals respond to it. If it works, expect to see a spate of Sergeant Carters in ...

Great Moments in Frivolity, Part I

... Following a poorly-played spring training game, Royals' manager Trey Hillman delivers a verbal reprimand of his entire team on the field in front of over 5,000 fans at Surprise Stadium. Sources in the crowd report that Hillman was particularly displeased with the way that the Royals lollygagged the ball around the infield, lollygagged their way down to first, and lollygagged in and out of the dugout. This, according to pitching coach Bob McClure, made the Royals "lollygaggers." ...

And That Happened

... : Remember when Trey Hillman publicly shamed his team back in spring training? Look for the Royals to be doing community service or going into the witness protection program after this one. Bright side: at least the Royals have finally found Tony Pena's true calling, as he pitched a scoreless ninth with a strikeout to boot. Reader Adam Thomas notes: "Probably the best Royals inning, pitching-wise, in the game. Low-90s fastballs and 75mph curves. Pretty hilarious, and makes you wonder about the Royals' dogged insistence for keeping him on the roster." Clearly, Pena was a ...
