 07-08 Predictions With Conviction
by Jes Well, I finally put together the little predictions spreadsheet that I do every year, comparing my picks with Greg's, Mirtle's, and other mainstream writers and publications. Just to brag a little, I tend to kick the MSM's ass quite frequently, although I do have the benefit of time. Magazines have to come out with their predictions a bit earlier ... although they still tend to make ... [link]

A prediction compilation
Published 10/5/2007 by James Mirtle at james mirtle
Jes Golbez does a nice job of compiling various NHL predictions from across the land, a group of 10 that includes myself and some other choice hockey minds. I'm the only soul with Florida in the playoffs, and the Wild winning their division, so I suppose those are my out on a limb picks. Only three pickers have Nashville in the postseason, the same number that have picked St. Louis. Division leaders Atlantic : Pittsburgh 70%, Rangers 30% Northeast : Ottawa 100% Southeast : Carolina 90%, Florida 10% Central : Detroit 100% Northwest : Colorado 40%, Calgary 30%, Vancouver 20%, Minnesota 10% Pacific : San Jose 60%, Anaheim 30%, Dallas 10% In the playoffs Ottawa 100% Pittsburgh 100% N.Y. Rangers 100% Buffalo 100% Carolina 90% New Jersey 90% Tampa Bay 70% Atlanta 50% Toronto 30% Philadelphia 30% N.Y. Islanders 20% Montreal 10% Florida 10% Washington 0% Boston 0% Detroit 100% San Jose 100% Anaheim 100% ...

... tie at the bottom. (I don't think it mattered who got Nylander.) Pittsburgh, Buffalo, New Jersey, Anaheim and Calgary would all miss the playoffs if they started tomorrow. Dallas and Vancouver are right on the bubble. The postseason's a good five months away — but there's a good chance half of the above don't get their act together to climb back into the mix. Maybe what's most surprising has been the hot start of teams like the Islanders, Boston, Columbus and Chicago, teams that received zero respect in preseason predictions. (If I had to pick just one reason, it'd be ...

... Maybe what’s most surprising has been the hot start of teams like the Islanders, Boston, Columbus and Chicago, teams that received zero respect in preseason predictions. (If I had to pick just one reason, it’d be coaching, as all four men have done an amazing job behind the bench with these teams so far. I keep saying not to bet against Ted Nolan and then breaking my own rule, and it’s hard to believe the way that team has played — something that’s been obscured by the fact they’ve played the fewest games in the league. This is a club on pace for ...

Can Montreal Win The East?

... which was the highest predicted finish among many predictions ). Yet, with only three games left they sit atop the East Conference with 98 points. Can they really win the East Conference? Are they really the best team in the east? For much of the season, they relied on goaltender Cristobal Huet, who is a good goalie. They traded him to Washington on the trade deadline, which prompted me to call them ...

Predators on the Playoff Prowl

... . There was no limping to the finish line, but rather a strong drive (5-0-1) that lifted Nashville past the struggling Canucks. For Preds fans, it's obviously a time of relief and celebration, and a good time to stick out your chest and declare, "nobody thought we could do it!" But was that really so? This preseason roundup saw 3 of 10 experts picking Nashville to make the playoffs, with ...
