 2007-08 Vezina voting
The only real controversy from last night's awards? New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur winning the Vezina over Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks, whose supporters feel like their man has been robbed. — Greg Wyshynski, Yahoo!Heck, I thought this one was a lot easier to call than most, with the Calder and Jack Adams the real question marks. Nabokov's Poor Vezina/ First All Star Team Case

... way. They saw it as a close race between Brodeur and Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks. Nabokov has a good season. He led the NHL in wins. The problem with using wins to determine who is the best goalie is that wins are a highly team dependent statistic. San Jose had the second most wins in the NHL (behind Detroit) and since Detroit split their goaltending duties between Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek, it's no surprise that a San Jose goalie would lead the NHL in wins. ... Also interesting was the fact that Ryan Miller didn’t receive a single vote for the Vezina, while the goalie he is most often compared to, Henrik Lundqvist, received a first-place vote and eight third-place votes. ... According to the paper, he'll make $3 million this season, $3.6 million in 2009-10 and $4.8 million in 2010-11. Leclaire make $1.4 million last season, when he was an outstanding 24-17-6 with a 2.25 GAA and a .919 save percentage -- good for ninth in the NHL for goalies who played more than 50 games. The fact that Leclaire only played 54 games likely kept him out of the Vezina voting, which was a shame. ...

... The Custodians (Goalies): Is it possible Jean-Sebastian Giguere has gone from one of the most overrated goalies in hockey to one of the most underrated? He gave up fewer goals (117) on more shots (1,508) than he did in the previous season, finished with a 2.12 GAA and yet earned almost no respect during the Vezina voting. His numbers are ...
