As far as the Yankees were concerned, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez will be starters, and Mariano Rivera made the team as a reserve. He also is a possibility to take the roster spot of David Ortiz, who was voted a starter, but is still injured and will not play.

... Joe Torre used to get a lot of flack when he was Yankees manager for picking his own guys to be All-Star reserves, but Terry Francona takes the cake. On today's All-Star Selection Show on TBS, it was announced that Jason Varitek would join Joe Mauer and Dioner Navarro as catchers on the American League roster. ...
Boston vs. Chicago in 2008 MLB All-Star Game
Published 7/6/2008 by Tuffy at SPORTSbyBROOKS
The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs will each send seven men (theoretically) to defend the honor of their respective leagues in the 2008 MLB All-Star Game, including two-thirds of the starting NL outfield and the right side of the AL infield. (”Theoretically” means David Ortiz’s limp wrist is listed but shall not participate. Alfonso Soriano may be iffy as well.) ...

Deserving Yet Unheralded

... Following the hour-long roster announcements yesterday all but two players–who will have to wait for the final vote–learned of their plans to venture to New York for the festivities. The rosters, which can be found here, comprise 32 of the best players in each league relative to the requirement that each team in that league be represented. Additionally, the starters are chosen by the fans and, quite simply, are not too often fully indicative of those deserving to start. ...

Jason Varitek is an All-Star. How?
Published 7/7/2008 by Ryan Hudson at RealClearSports - Blog
... Yesterday, the 2008 MLB All-Star game rosters were announced, and Jason Varitek, Red Sox catcher, made the AL squad. But, how?
Now, Varitek is a very good catcher. Obviously intangibles are tough to measure, but he leads that Red Sox pitching staff, and has for almost 10 seasons now -- there's a reason he's the captain of the team. He's also caught four no-hitters, a MLB-record. All great stuff.
But.
He's hitting just .218 and slugging only .360 this season. He has more strikeouts (70) than hits (53), and is currently in one of the worst slumps of his ...
