USA BASKETBALL WINS GOLD

... and taking stupid technical fouls. But now, order is restored and the U.S. is once again on top of the basketball world. Huge props to Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski getting this team to play hard. Not difficult to figure out that if you can get a bunch of guys playing together for extended periods of time and use their athleticism(cough cough Larry Brown) and force turnovers, that these games end up a lot easier than they should be. Highlights Recap **Update** Shoulda checked AwfulAnnouncing before I posted. He ...

Chris Paul: Olympic Champion
Hornets247.com Blog —
... Congratulations to Chris Paul and Team USA, who defeated Spain 118-107 early this morning to win gold at the Beijing Olympics. Damn game messed up my whole sleepy time but it was sure fun to watch with Spain playing their asses off, Kobe Bryant coming up clutch, and CP showing his usual steady hand throughout. ...

Team USA is Golden
Brew Hoop —
Team USA is golden again after toppling Spain 118-107 (recap/quotes) in the early hours this morning.
Five thoughts after the win:
Despite the up-and-down performance, Team USA won each quarter, if ever so narrowly. It went 38-31, 31-30, 22-21, and 27-25 for the Americans, who never could create a commanding lead against the same team they knocked around by 37 points the week prior. Spain played wonderfully in the gold medal match, but let's not suddenly delude ourselves and pretend Team USA didn't thoroughly dominate this tournament. They ...
There's gold in them thar hills!
Lakers Blog —
... Team USA's mission was to bring a gilded medallion from China home to the states. Said mission was accomplished last night (this morning, if you're watching on American TV) with a 118-107 victory over Spain. It was considered a foregone destiny by many heading into tourney that the Redeem Team (meh, but everyone else seems to find the name catchy) would bring closure to the American's 2004 disappointment. Fate indeed went fulfilled, but not without a fight and some enemy scare tactics. Credit Spain- playing without starting point guard Jose Calderon (of Raptors fame)- ...
Who Reigns Supreme?
The Cowhide Globe —
... Team USA has come full circle. When the Dream Team of the ’92 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain took to the court, they were considered the best arrangement of superstars ever assembled. After many Summer Games since, and with a perception or reality that the world has caught up to USA basketball (Argentina won the 2004 Gold Medal after all), the Redeem Team of 2008 has brought back USA basketball dominance. Thorough and convincing has been their play, the USA superstars of today have drawn comparisons to that untouchable bunch of 1992. Perhaps bordering upon hoop-lore blasphemy, the ...
Band of Brothers

... the last day of the Olympics, in their last battle, to accomplish their goal. It was not only a goal of gold, but a goal for respect that was once lost from other players from around the world and their home country. It was a goal of pride that needed to be renewed, by a group of men, in honor to those before them. Finally, it was a goal of redemption that drove this team to shine in what looked to be their darkest hour, in their biggest test of these ...
2008 Year-End Sports Review: What We Already Knew

... After mowing through the competition en route to the championship game, Team USA – led by Kobe Bryant and LeBron James – survived a scare against a feisty squad from Spain (which featured Pau Gasol and NBA ROY candidate Rudy Fernandez) to win the gold medal, 118-107. The win culminated a three-year quest to overcome the embarrassment of the team’s three-loss, third-place performance at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Jerry Colangelo assembled a terrific team (securing Kobe was the key) and found great head coach to lead them. With that much focused talent and Coach ...
