$21 million payroll is insulting -- Wages and Pensions, Florida Marlins, Johan Santana -- South Florida Sun Links5
Ah, Opening Day. The crack of the bat. The smack of the glove. The Marlins fan looking over the new roster and asking, full of optimism, "Will any team be more profitable?" Because let's not lie. Let's not ignore the 800-pound gorilla in the dugout and talk some Opening Day nonsense about how a little better defense or a few more first-pitch strikes will help these Marlins surprise everyone. ... Marlins $21 Million Payroll is Insulting
Published 3/31/2008 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
Marlins $21 Million Payroll is Insulting The Marlins got $600 million in public money for a new stadium and amenities. They can’t just brush the subject of their embarrassing payroll under the carpet anymore and hope no one notices. All that before selling a ticket. ...

... The Marlins have a $21MM payroll. This guy thinks that's insulting. I think it's kind of cool. Granted, I don't care if the Marlins win or lose, and I like seeing youngsters and I like rooting for underdogs. But even apart from all of that, it's an interesting experiment, isn't it? While the Marlins ownership is hardly the classiest bunch in the game, what this writer ignores is: what good would a bunch of free agents do for them? They could've kept Miggy and Dontrelle and won 80 games. They could've coughed up the dough for ...I don't know, Hideki Kuroda, and maybe won 82 ...

... Local media, instead of unequivocally supporting the hometown team, again find the most inappropriate time to attack the team. After all, nothing helps a team desperately in need of public support more than a public attack on perhaps their most visible day of the year. ...
