Though the joy in Atlanta is surely tempered by the loss, all of the boys and girls on Peachtree rejoiced as Felipe Lopez struck out, making John Smoltz the 16th pitcher to record 3000 strikeouts in a career . In the bottom of the third, Smoltz utilized his signature split-finger fastball to retire Lopez. I’ll be complaining about the game in a moment, but for now, please indulge me. John Smoltz just got his 3,000th strikeout, and he’s pitching some of the best baseball of his career. Unlike Craig Biggio, who hung around too long just to try to collect his 3,000th hit, Smoltz is raking in strikeouts like they were candy — his K/9 is currently 12.1, higher than he’s ever ...Smoltz Gets 3000 K’s, Braves Fall

Tonight was a special night for John Smoltz (3-1), who unfortunately got the loss after striking out 10 in seven innings of one-run ball. In the third, he struck out the 3000th batter of his career, joining only 15 other pitchers in baseball.
