Ducksnorts: 500

... Ducksnorts: 500 Wow. Trevor Hoffman is a god. I got chills watching his teammates carrying him off the field, and then again during the video montage of his career. I m lucky to have a guy accomplish (almost) all of that on my favorite team who is also a pillar of the community and a total class act. And even during the press conference afterwards, he kept deflecting credit and attention, to his teammates and to the other great closers (Rivera, Eck, Smith, Franco). Geoff was there tonight, and I got chills again looking at his pictures. I m a tad bit ashamed I missed it myself. Matt Vasgersian was calling the game with Tony Gwynn as the color guy. Vasgersian s call after the final out: Five hundred saves for Trevor Hoffman! He s going to have a plaque right next to yours in Cooperstown someday, Mr. Gwynn. Then he did the smart thing and shut up, and let us enjoy the celebration.

... jury trouble and became the master of the change up. And his is so nasty; that guys go up to the plate looking for it - knowing it s coming and still can it it. By the way, it was Trevor s 498th save as a San Diego Padre, lest we forget that he started his career with the Florida Marlins. In my opinion, I think that Hoffman is twice the closer that Mariano Rivera is. Period. But hey, that s just me and I m sure there are some who think I m out of my mind (wont be the first or last time). I also think that Rollie Fingers (who was also a Padre during his career) was a better closer than Marino is..but again that s just me. And it has nothing to do with my dislike of the Yankees, I just feel deep down in my gut among other things that Rollie and Trevor are better. That s taking nothing away from Mo, who is pretty much headed to the Hall Of Fame once his career wraps up. So congratulations to #51, a milestone well deserved. For the 500th save in pictures, head over to Ducksnorts.
