On a final note, my friend and fellow ballhawk Nick Yohanek (aka "The
Happy Youngster") has really gotten screwed by both the Marlins and the
media, and now he's getting bashed mercilessly as a result. Check out
the Associate Press story about him (note Coghlan's absurdly dishonest quote in the 4th paragraph) and then read Nick's version of the story
on his blog. Wow.
The Happy Youngster is a douchebag

... doesn't make it right.
Coghlan, quite understandably, wanted that home run ball back. Most fans would be glad to be a part of that moment and give the ball to him in exchange for whatever was offered. Off the top of my head, I'd say an autographed ball to replace the ball or possibly a bat would be a reasonable exchange. Maybe even a jersey if the player was feeling particularly friendly that day.
All of the events that follow are either taken from Happy's own blog, or accounts from others directly involved in the story.

Despicable Baseball Fan or Capitalist? Nick Yohanek Catches Chris Coghlan’s Homer, Holds it for Ransom
The Big Lead —
... Chris Coghlan of the Marlins (seen here with mouth agape) hit his first major league homer this week. The fan who caught the ball at Miller Park, Nick Yohanek, has his own blog. He detailed what went down next: In exchange for the ball, the pushy fan demanded a ball signed by Coghlan, a bat signed by Coghlan and a signed Hanley Ramirez bat. If you feel those demands are extreme, he calls this a “hobby.” ...

... Yohanek has an extraordinarily detailed account of the whole thing on his website (did you know that every MLB team is supposed to have TWO authenticators on hand at each game? Nick does!). Suffice it to say, it doesn't appear that he's a stranger to bartering for the baseballs he's caught. Nick spoke to EIGHT Marlins' officials (including, for some reason, the team's psychologist), and even had his demands written out for posterity's sake (a Chris Coghlan game bat and signed ball, and a Hanley Ramirez game bat). Finally, Coghlan himself came out to speak with Yohanek. There are ...

... I'm including Ronny Woo Woo. Here's the back story, this "kid" (he's 30 years old) goes around and tries to catch as many home run balls possible. Not too bad you say? Well, even though the guy caught over 370 balls this season alone (that's including batting practice) he apparently needs to keep all those balls to himself. It's not bad enough that this asshole refuses to give the caught balls to kids around him, but on one night he caught Chris Coghlan's first ever home run, and then held it for ransom. According to Coghlan, he demanded, "an autographed baseball by Coghlan, a ...
