5 Underrated Sports Blogs

In an interview on Larry Brown Sports the other night, Zach from TheBigPicture/FanHouse/UDubDish/SeattleTimes mentioned that one of his favorite blogs that "doesn't always get a ton of pub but deserves it" is The Hater Nation. I'd have to agree, and it got me thinking that there are other blogs that I'd put into that category as well.

Here are 5 sports blogs that are "underrated" in my book. Criteria for inclusion is pretty simple—these are blogs that currently don't crack the top 100 of the Ballhype blog rankings, but somehow seem like they should. Looking over the list, I wouldn't characterize any of them as typical sports blogs.

The Hater Nation

Go figure: one of the best-designed sports blogs around covers a team with one of the toughest personas in sports. The creativity doesn't stop there; Adam's writing is entertaining enough to make up for Oakland's abysmal 2006 season. Examples: Liberace's NBA Preview, Can't Hate Swisher.

The Painted Area

Thank goodness Henry Abbott turned me onto this one—it's an amazing source for NBA analysis. These Hubie-philes really know their stuff, and are often almost always more insightful than the pros. For a taste, check out Acceptable Board Scores for Finals, or pretty much any of their playoffs game recaps.

Straight Bangin'

If you like the NBA, hip hop, and U of Michigan (or even 2 out of 3), you're bound to find plenty to enjoy here—just be sure to allocate enough time. Bonus points if you're a Tony Starks fan. Don't miss: NBA Award Tour 2007, USC Signs Lil' Romeo to Run the Point.

Empty the Bench

Offering commentary and analysis on the day's news: OK, sure. What sets ETB apart is their execution—they consistently offer an interesting point of view. Check out: Sizing Up the NBA's 2006 First-Round Picks, Lebron's Neighbor: "Honey, He Doesn't Want to Shoot Hoops with You. Get Over It!".

Nation Of Islam Sportsblog

Like sports and the Nation of Islam? Then you'll love NOISb. Comments are a must-read on this blog, epecially gems like Viking Victim of Jim Crow Laws and Colin Cowherd: An Act of Self Defense.

If you aren't familiar with any of these, I'd recommend giving them a look. Got your own "underrated" list? Please share.
