This IS frigging AWESOME (the franchise, that is)

    for the Silversword

America cares about soccer more than most sports.  Only three or four are more popular - think of all the sports we have here. Soccer is THE most popular of all in some ways and with some groups of AMERICANS.

Speak for yourself next time, not for the whole country.

Silversword55 is out of touch.  He needs only to browse this website for a few minutes to discover all of the news articles on expansion and investment including great new stadiums made just for that sport.

Billionaire investment groups including movie producers  and superstar athletes and owners of other types of sports teams wouldn't be investing so heavily in this sport if they thought for 1 minute that  "America doesn't care about soccer"

It's just my humble opinion, but it won't be as popular in the USA as the NFL. NBA, MLB, NHL, and NCAA Sports. When it comes to these 5, the MLS has to take a backseat, unfortunately.

    ALOHA, guys =)

As a league, of course, it will take time to grow.  It only started in 1996, after all.  There are record crowds for soccer, record viewing on TV, more and bigger TV deals (7 national networks will combine to televise every MLS game this season). Average attendances for the league are now about the same as NBA and NHL league-wide averages.  Some teams' average attendances (including Galaxy) are higher than the same cities' NBA and NHL teams.

As a sport in general, and for TV viewing, soccer is already much more popular than almost anything.  As an organized recreational team sport, nothing else comes close.

Suffice it to say that MLS is the new 'hot property' for sports investment.  This is the American sport of the future: The MLS supporters - and investors obviously - know that the public demand is there now, as it has been growing - and will continue to grow.

    Silversword,

Thing is, people say stuff like "not as popular as the NFL or MLB" like that's a death sentence.  There's already a huge sliding scale in the leagues you just listed, but getting over that negative mentatlity is the biggest challenge MLS has had to face.

But it's already started happening, since the league has survived 12 years, since stadiums are getting built, (I think this will be the 9th, if I'm not mistaken), and since some teams (LA, Chicago, Toronto) are starting to sell out on a regular basis.

This league starting to turn the corner in a real way and make some moves that only a self-confident league would ever make (like they're spending money on player development systems, something leagues that wonder where their next meal is coming from never do) and allowing franchise players.  They're charging more and more for the expansion teams, but owners still want to pay it.

I don't know how far it can go, only that it's going good right now, and it's good to be a part of it.

well stated.  to answer the last part about how far it (expansion) can go, a plan is in place, and FIFA also will have a say in how many teams can be in the table.

I head the San Diego group, and St. Louis is in front for spot 17.  We are competing also with Cleveland (OH), Milwaukee (WI), Portland (OR), NYC, Miami (FL), and others in USA with interest including Las Vegas and Atlanta, as well as at least two Canadian cities who have successful USL teams and major interest - Vancouver and Montreal.

The table by 2012 may top out at 18 teams.  So, you have many cities competing for what amounts to two spots.  There's a chance they'll go to 20, but that would probably be the most, at least for a few more years following that.

All regions I had listed - including those you mentioned ( Miami and San Diego ) - have supporters groups jockeying for position in line to get their own team.  Miami is making a good effort, and out of the 16 so far, there is no team in the Southeastern states.  The old Orange Bowl is being redeveloped, and that is really the catalyst, along with the possibility to have a soccer stadium included in the new complex with the new Marlins ballpark.  You can read news about the MLS Miami Supporters Group on BallHype, here - http://mlsdevelopment.typepad.com/mls_expansion_and_develop/2008/03/mls-miami-suppo.html

The Philadelphia Soul have joined the Phantoms, Wings and Kixx in Philadelphia’s sporting pantheon; i.e. the one that doesn’t count against the drought. Is there any doubt the MLS Cup will be next? The Phillies, on the other hand, may only ever win a Series if the innings where they face good starting pitching doesn’t count. Against relievers they are absolutely golden. Thanks to a rain delay the Phils and Braves are still just in the 8th; after trailing 5-0 (Adam Eaton allowed three runs as the first man out of the pen) they took a 12-5 lead on home runs from five different players (including Jimmy Rollins, for the first time ...
