By Jim Street / MLB.com 11/02/09 12:42 PM EST A knee injury that became increasingly worse during the season has been surgically repaired and former Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn said he's looking forward to continuing a career he thought had reached the end. "Going into Spring Training, ...

Jarrod Washburn Discusses The Future
MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com —
MLB.com's Jim Street talked to free agent lefty Jarrod Washburn recently. Washburn, a 35-year-old Scott Boras client, posted a 3.78 ERA in 176 innings this year for the Mariners and Tigers. A few highlights from their chat:
Back in Spring Training, Washburn was planning to retire after the '09 season. He wasn't enjoying the game anymore. However, Washburn's improved ...
Washburn would like to return to Seattle
Beck's Blog —
MLB.com Mariners reporter Jim Street caught up with likely former Tigers pitcher Jarrod Washburn, who should be healthy next spring after having his knee cleaned out last month. That said, even a healthy Washburn seems unlikely to return to Detroit. As many expected, Washburn sounded like someone who would very much like to return to Seattle, where he credits his success for the first half of this past season and the clubhouse atmosphere with pulling him away from a possible retirement. "We had a lot of fun and the coaching staff made it a much more
pleasant working environment," he said. "You looked forward to coming
to work."
On the July 31 trade to Detroit, Washburn said ...

Aroldis Chapman and Felix Hernandez
Phil Rogers, Chicago Tribune:
The Aroldis Chapman market is going to be interesting to judge. The Mariners are the latest team to jump seriously into the bidding, possibly hoping to have another front-line arm so they can deal Felix Hernandez before he reaches free agency.
Rogers must have had a hard time figuring out how to open his article, because this is just stupid. The Mariners wouldn’t go after Chapman as a replacement for King Felix. The Mariners are kicking the tires on Chapman because he’s a good prospect, and good organizations tend to gather up as many good ...

Circling The Bases —
franklin-gutierrez-091102.jpg Anyone who saw the results of the " Hank Aaron Award " yesterday knows to take the results of any award voting with a grain of salt, particularly if fans are involved. (No offense to the masses, but when Derek Jeter beats out Joe Mauer for a hitting award, something is wrong.) Some awards, though, are worth giving a closer look. Witness the Fielding Bible Awards , which released their winners on Monday. What the honor lacks in name recognition, it more than makes up for in heavyweight brainpower, with a voting panel that includes a mix of sabermetric guys and sharp writers, from Bill James and John Dewan (author of The Fielding Bible) to Joe Posnanski, Peter ...
Jarrod Washburn wouldn't mind returning to Seattle
Detroit Tigers blog —
Jarrod Washburn's time as a Tiger should officially come to an end soon.
After coming to Detroit at the July 31 trade deadline after four months of pretty successful baseball, he did little in a Tigers uniform (7.33 ERA, much gnashing of teeth from the fans) and eventually saw his season come to a close in mid-September. His season ended early due to a knee injury, one that the Tigers knew about and were not concerned over.
Washburn spoke to MLB.com's Jim Street, the Mariners beat writer, about his plans for the future.
Washburn on being traded:
"Going to a first-place team was nice, but I was leaving a group of players that I loved. It was both good and ...
Morning Prowl: 40-Man Roster Decisions, Placido Polanco's Market Value, and Van Slyke's Replacement
Bless You Boys —
At The Detroit Tigers Weblog, Bill Ferris looks at the team's 40-man roster, which currently has 44 players on it (due to some being protected on the disabled list). So the Tigers have some decisions to make, especially as some minor leaguers will need to be protected. Bill speculates who the first cuts will likely be.
The San Francisco Giants re-signing second baseman Freddy Sanchez last week seemed like a harmless enough transaction. But Tiger Geist immediately pounced on how that could affect the Tigers. Will Sanchez's deal determine Placido Polanco's price on the ...

One more lap for The Kid
outsidethepressbox.com 25 days ago — It wasn’t all that surprising when the news came down that Ken Griffey Jr. was going to be returning to the Mariners for his 22nd season (!) in the bigs – for all the hand-wringing about the Griffey experiment last year, it, much like the rest of the Seattle season, turned out to be ...

Shock out of Seattle: Ken Griffey Jr. is coming back to the Emerald City.
Let’s be clear, it’s not a shock that Seattle wanted him back. If they could, they would take his Cooperstown’s bust, relocate it to Seattle and place it in the shrine they’ll build.
No, the real shock is that ...

Griffey is one of those rare players in sports who have earned the right to come back if a team wants him. This is also a smart business move by the Mariners.
