When I took my then-three-year-old son to his first hockey game (Phoenix @ Dallas, as it happens), the first period ended and a pair of figure skaters hit the ice. After watching them for about 30 seconds, my son turned to me and asked, "Daddy, why aren't they playing hockey?"
