A hidden dent in Frank Thomas’s value? Links0
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 A hidden dent in Frank Thomas’s value? Posted by Derek Carty at 3:34pm No team has made an offer at any price at any time. That's a simple fact. At this point in time, no club has even offered the minimum salary. And even though the minimum salary wouldn't be a bona fide offer for a player of his stature, it's beyond comprehension that no team [has made] ... [link]

Derek - you write: "If collusion is indeed taking place—and there is some evidence to indicate that it is—then Major League Baseball owners have already shown a willingness to block out a player."

There is some evidence? What evidence are you talking about? I've seen allegations, speculations and suspicions, but nothing that I would call "evidence". But perhaps I haven't been paying close enough attention. What evidence is there?

First, I'll say that this article was not meant to be about Barry Bonds at all.

Next, I'll say that perhaps "evidence" was a poor choice of words.

I'd then direct you to a quote from this article: "assuming they are colluding against Bonds, which I am not passing judgment on one way or the other."

I'd then point you towards this article by John Brittain: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/those-who-do-not-learn-from-history/ if you are interested in Barry Bonds stuff.

I'd then say that if I believed this were true, the fact that a guy with Barry's talent (10.29 RC/27 last year, just one of many numbers I could reference) has yet to receive a single contract offer would lend a lot of credence to the theory.  Now that Thomas has been signed, why did he get snatched up so quickly and drew interest from 4 teams while Bonds has been waiting around all winter despite being less talented than Bonds and also seen as a clubhouse problem?

Again, not voicing an opinion one way or the other, but I would say there that is some "evidence," given some peoples' definition of the word.  Again, though, a better word could have been chosen.

      My apologies.

Hey, no apologies necessary.  I am not a lawyer or an agent. :-)

Since you pay more attention to this stuff than I, I was just wondering if I missed something in the story.

And now that Thomas has signed, does that add to the suspicion?  Or is Bonds so toxic in the Bay Area that the A's were fearing bad mojo?  Not being a west coast guy, I can't say one way or another.
