chone It's completely ridiculous that this dude is dead and the woman is going to jail for something so dumb. But, a drunk dude outside of a bar harasses a woman who's by herself in the middle of the night, and dies in an accident, then gets a tribute at Fenway? No thanks. Sorry if that's callous, but this extraneous, outside of the game, "rivalry" bullshit has to stop. -
dmothe30 With all due respect, I believe you need to read the stories before opening your mouth.
Each news report -- and police -- have said that the woman struck someone in the group before said "harassment" went on. There's no doubt this situation escalated on both sides, but to essentially say he had it coming smacks of ignorance and the mockery of a senseless death.
Listen, I'm completely with you when you say the overblown "rivalry" outside the game itself needs to end. I've blogged about it frequently. But have a heart, man.
-
EthanJaynes I think that it should be tastefully done and point to the fact that this was senseless.
I think that it could easily be done at Yankee stadium as well. The memorial is not to just remember his death. It is also to keep us in remembrance that this should have never happened.

-
Evil Empire It's messed up, but I'd rather see the teams distance themselves from this shit. When it comes to laying blame, fandom takes a distant third after drunkedness and idiocy. -
McLean Stevenson LOL, they can't be serious about this shit, right? Baseball fans die every day! Unless this gets idiot Red Sox fans to stop acting like a-holes, then please give it a rest. -
KellyDwyer I can't get over the initial assumption that this guy -- less inebriated and a lot more lucid than the woman behind the wheel -- was picking on this older, drunker woman ceaselessly.
-
dmothe30 Again, people miss the point. The petition was every bit as much about a guy shielding his younger friend from an oncoming vehicle driven by an apparently "distressed" woman.
This isn't about turning someone into a martyr for Red Sox fandom, it's about honoring someone who died trying to save a friend. And unless I missed something, the violence in this incident -- the slap/punch in the face and the rundown -- were both committed by the woman. Since when does taunting, if that's what it was, justify violence?
-
Evil Empire If it's just about honoring someone who died trying to save a friend, why does the team need to get involved?
My point is: it's a drunk/stupid issue, not a baseball issue. The only reason we know about it is because somebody in the newsroom was savvy enough to play up the rivalry angle.

-
KellyDwyer "Since when does taunting, if that's what it was, justify violence?"
Find the quote that implies that, and I'll dignify that with a response.
-
newgroom422 I agree with Evil Empire. This is not a baseball story, but a crime story. MLB and the teams should stay out of it. -
dmothe30 Evil/Newsgroom,
Your opinions are duly noted. McLean's comment struck me as the kind of thought process that will perpetuate more of these problems, though, hence the reaction.
-
1ofthefewtheproud for what it's worth, dmothe 30...I don't miss the point.
Thanks for posting this.
-
McLean Stevenson I want to start a fund to honor the poor car who was needlessly involved in this horrific incident. -
NFLAdam What if they did this every time a Raiders fan killed somebody? -

NFLAdam I don't get it. That wasn't funny at all.

... rooting for the Boston Red Sox and his apparent heroic actions before death, we ask that the Red Sox consider honoring Beaudoin’s memory with — at the very least — a day in his honor.
