I've been noodling over an idea today, an idea to make the PGA Tour "playoffs" really matter. To players and fans. To make them feel more like real lose-and-you-go-home playoffs, to build momentum from week-to-week leading up to a "super bowl" of golf with all the attendant hype, pomp and circumstance.     I like your winner-take-all plan.  The "real" golfers would rise to the challenge and to the top. 

    I like the idea of the Fedex Cup.  It seems someone along the line responsible for making decisions didn't put much thought into the process of arriving at a champion.

What can we do to entice Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and company -- not to mention the fans -- to buy into the FedExCup concept at least long enough to show up for the tournaments? Match play: Waggle Room has the most radical suggestion. If it's playoffs the PGA Tour wants, then make them playoffs. A winner-take-all match-play tournament. Given the history of match-play tournaments, we might see a 24th seed walk away with $20 million, but those are the breaks. Six weeks to play four: Phil needs a break? Tiger needs a shift of baby sitting duty? Els needs to do whatever Els does when he's not playing golf? Fine. Let's stretch the playoffs to six weeks but give golfers as many as two weeks off. Here's how: - Weeks 1-2: We start with 144 golfers, just as we had this year. Golfers count their best performance of these two weeks toward the standings.
