A STARTLING CONTENTION / GM: Giants - who fall to Astros - have shot in '08 Links9
(05-14) 22:42 PDT -- Like most baseball folk, general manager Brian Sabean likes to assess his team once it completes one quarter of its schedule. The Giants did so with a 6-3 loss to Houston on Wednesday night, and strange as it might sound, Sabean sees a San Francisco team that can contend. Not in two seasons, not next season, but in 2008. "As long as we've got a chance to stay in and ... [link]

SF Gate: Sabean thinks Giants have chance in 2008
Published 5/15/2008 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
SF Gate: Sabean thinks Giants have chance in 2008 Sure… and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” is going to come back and have a ten-season run. “As long as we’ve got a chance to stay in and around third place, why not?” Sabean said as he stood along the dugout rail and watched his players take batting practice. “Why wouldn’t you want to think that way? These guys think that way.”

Brian Sabean is Delusional

He thinks the Giants can contend . . . . .this season: "I think we've come a long way," Sabean said. "When you consider some of our challenges in spring training and some of the question marks, we've got to be considered one of the most improved teams in baseball."Of course Sabean fails to mention that the "challenges in spring training" and the "question marks" are attributable to his failure to develop talent, clear dead wood, and correctly evaluate where his team is on the success cycle. But what else is he going to say? His champion -- ...

Sabean on the Waterfront
Published 5/15/2008 by E.L.M. at El Lefty Malo
Uh-oh. Hank Schulman tells us in this morning’s Chronnie that Brian Sabean thinks the 2008 Giants can be contenders. No one-way ticket to Palookaville for these guys. This by itself is not a bad thing. Optimism is nice. It motivates players, and it encourages fans to come out and scream for their hometown boys. Nothing wrong with that. But when optimism gets in the way of the rebuilding process, which has gotten off to a good start, it can be foolish. Let’s run through some of Sabean’s comments and interpret them. ...

2nd & Short: Barkley's gambling may be getting out of hand

... 40 The number of lineup variations San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy has used through 41 games this season. However, not having a settled lineup a quarter of the way through the season hasn't diminished the optimism of Bochy's boss, Giants general manager Brian Sabean, who said San Francisco is still a contender. "As long as we've got a chance to stay in and around third place, why not?" Sabean told the San Francisco Gate this week. "Why wouldn't you want to think that way?" Sabean ...

BREAKING: Brian Sabean experiences a reality that we do not

This from the San Francisco Chronicle, under the headline "A Startling Contention": Sabean sees a San Francisco team that can contend. Not in two seasons, not next season, but in 2008. "As long as we've got a chance to stay in and around third place, why not?" Sabean said as he stood along the dugout rail and watched his players take batting practice ... "Between what people thought of us and how we're actually performing, I think these guys have a lot to be proud of." ...

San Francisco SuckWatch 2008: Some Giants not sucking quite as hard as they used to suck

... .” In the past two weeks, the San Francisco tranwreck express seems to have veered off the track of awesome HD flatscreen total suckage and back onto the track of boring, basic cable suckage. On one hand, the team is in the throes of a five-game losing streak, but on the other hand, several positive developments have occurred which have made GM Brian Sabean so giddy with optimism that he is now declaring publicly that the Giants are still in contention this year and that he will not be trading away any veterans this season. Let’s look at what has gone the Giants’ way of late… ...

Giants Fall 60 Games Out of First, Hire Hillary Clinton As Special Advisor
Published 5/21/2008 by BG (noreply@blogger.com) at West Coast Bias Sports Blog
In a stunning move, Brian Sabean and the Giants have hired long shot presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton as a Special Advisor to the team. Following up on Sabean's outrageous claims last week that the Giants can compete and win this year, Sabean stated at his hastily assembled press conference, "We here in San Francisco have a long history of self-delusion and abject stubbornness. We stood by our ...

Great Moments in Frivolity, Part II

... Giants' GM Brian Sabean announces that he thinks his team can yet contend in 2008, lauding his players for overcoming all of the "challenges" and "question marks" they faced coming out of spring training. Sabean fails to mention, however, that all of the challenges and question marks were the result of his own failure to draft and develop a position player during virtually his entire tenure as General Manager. ...

Dare we watch the (gulp) San Francisco Giants-Chicago White Sox game this weekend?

My wife, daughter and I are headed up to the Bay Area this weekend for her 30th birthday with plans to take in all the usual tourist attractions: Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and Fisherman’s Wharf with a few cable-car rides mixed in between. AT&T Ballpark, however, is on the bubble at this point. Five reasons we won't visit AT&T this weekend: 1. No Barry Bonds (and without him, the ...
