World Cup 2010 Qualifiers
2010 World Cup — It's good to be back and posting on this 'ere World Cup football blog. It's been a long time. But the draw for the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup Finals has been announced - the complete list is here on the official FIFA site The most notable fixtures thrown up by this draw are the pairing of England with Croatia in Group 6 - Croatia, of course, put England out of Euro 2008. Also in Europe, Greece seem to have been given a free pass to the Finals as their Group 2 opponents include Latvia, Luxembourg and Moldova. Still, the Greeks have been impressive of late and did, of ...

World Cup 2010
Football Down Under and Beyond — ... In October and November last year a preliminary knock out round in Africa claimed Comoros, Guinea-Bissau and Somalia. The rest of the federation has been drawn in 12 groups of four, to begin the round on the 30 May with Cameroon vs Cape Verde Islands and other games. They play for 5 places in the finals, including South Africa which has it's place as host guaranteed. ...

Blogger's Cup Wrap after a draining Qualifier, Australia v Iraq 1:0
Football Down Under and Beyond — ... In other World Cup news the Africa Confederation started their huge 12-Group Round 2 of qualifiers yesterday and continue as I write. Togo and Camaroon won their first games as expected (against Zambia and Caper Verde Islands respectively), but my disapointment was Kenya being beaten away by Namibia. I started following Kenya's progress because my housemate John, an excellent and knowledgeable football compatriot, is from Kenya. According to him they are in the easiest possible group (Namibia, Guinea and Zimbabwe) but they really should have beaten Namibia. John was devastated. ...

The Netminder — ... hit the usual contenders to join the USA and Mexico in the final tournament. How does Bermuda have a 2-1 lead over Trinidad and Tobago? (That would be MISL and USL veteran John Barry Nusum with two for Bermuda.) How about Grenada drawing Costa Rica? (Could've been worse.) Haiti might not be much of a power, but the Netherlands Antilles? Did they sign up the Netherlands' B team? That's CONCACAF for you. Nothing leaps out as a shocker at this stage in Africa, while Asia qualifying will go to the next round without China. ...

WCQ Stats & Info
Climbing the Ladder — I've been following the action and have some neat stuff to share with you. 1) I've been keeping track of the World Cup eliminations timeline, and just published an updated post below this one. There are now 128 teams remaining, including all 32 qualifiers from four years ago. There is one more African match next weekend, Gabon vs Lesotho, where the latter team is expected to be eliminated. After that, there's Kazakhstan vs Andorra in August. But the real action doesn't start up again until September 5th. Sucks. 2) Of the remaining 128 teams, 58 have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup. There have been at least ...

Climbing the Ladder — ... qualifier for each region during the next week: AFC: 9/6 - Saudi Arabia vs Iran Three teams in Group 2 are expected to compete for the two automatic bids; they are these two and South Korea. Iran struggled a bit during the last round, waiting until the final matchday to advance. Given how often the other two qualify for the World Cup, I'd say Iran are the favorites to finish third. Here's their chance to prove otherwise. CAF: 9/7 - Benin vs Angola Three teams are competing for first place ...

MLS/WCQ Notes & Updates
Climbing the Ladder — ... Only 121 teams remain, and all 32 of the 2006 World Cup teams are still alive. By this time four years ago, China had been ousted by Kuwait. Who will be the first to go this cycle? Trinidad & Tobago could be edged out by Guatemala, but that's unlikely to happen before November. That leaves Africa, where the current round will be done after the next match day in October and none of the five Germany representatives have progressed so far (standings) ...

The Netminder — ... AFRICA The final 20 are almost set. South Africa has qualified as host but is playing here for qualification into the 2010 African Cup of Nations. And they're not playing well. WCQs - Where We Stand
Climbing the Ladder — ... 1) In Africa, this weekend's results mean that Cameroon and Tunisia should now be considered clear favorites to qualify. If Gabon can't beat Cameroon at home, then how they can hope to get a result on the road? Togo let in a last second equalizer against Morocco which probably ended their hopes. Meanwhile, the draw with Nigeria means that all Tunisia needs to do is beat Kenya at home and Mozambique away. Should be easy, except the latter already held Nigeria to a scoreless draw at home. ...
