Tim McClelland Explains It All
Bugs & Cranks —
... verbatim from umpire Tim McClelland’s postgame press conference, after Game 4 of the ALCS, wherein he discussed his two mega-blown plays at third:
“The first one, with Swisher leaving too soon – in my heart I thought he left too soon.”
In my heart I thought: I want instant replay in the postseason.
Then, regarding one of the oddest plays (and calls) I’ve seen in recent years: ...
There are now no longer any valid reasons AGAINST instant replay

None. Zilch. Don't even bother writing a comment because you are wrong. It has moved beyond opinion... it has entered the world of fact. Tim McClelland was standing right THERE and saw what we all saw with out bare eyes... Mike Napoli tagged Robbie Cano and Jorge Posada and neither were standing on the bag. It looked that way in regular speed. It looked that way from a high and awkward camera angle. And guess what? The replay showed it... WHILE THE MANAGER WAS STILL ON THE FIELD ARGUING. So there goes the whole "it will ...

... Crew: Sheesh, where to begin? Was it home plate ump Jerry Layne who, after a bit of prodding from Mike Scioscia's face, decided to finally start calling low strikes for Scott Kazmir? Was it second base ump Dale Scott who missed the call on Kazmir's successful pickoff of Nick Swisher? Or was it crew chief Tim McClelland who had the single worst performance by an umpire in the history of playoff baseball without actually making any calls that affected the outcome of the game? On the play in question, Mike Napoli tagged both Jorge Posada and Robbie Cano as both were within ...

... bag. (See photo to right, courtesy of the site that never sleeps, SBNation.) So Angels catcher Mike Napoli made the smart play and tagged both of them out, because neither one was on the bag. Except, for whatever reason, (he didn’t have a good angle on Cano; he expected them both to be on the bag which happens 99 out of 100 times on a play like this) McClelland called Cano safe. Bad call. Some are even calling it THE WORST CALL OF ALL TIME. (You can see video of it here.)
If anything, this shows baseball could significantly benefit ...

... , but this one is the biggest joke I’ve ever seen. If you’re a Yankee in the ALCS, don’t worry about tags made on you while you’re off the bag… Tim McClelland has you covered. Even Joe Buck got it right. And the amazing thing is, we as fans just keep getting the same lines from MLB: ” Sorry, I feel terrible about it.” Yeah? Then do your damn job and get the calls right, especially in a big playoff game like that. ...
