Alou: Bartman Not To Blame For Foul Ball Blunder
Published 4/1/2008 by jason at SPORTSbyBROOKS
... But years later, Alou apparently had a little confession to make. Jim Litke of the ASSOCIATED PRESS recently wrote about meeting the ex-Cub now current Met last June while at the Macy’s store in midtown Manhattan. Inevitably, the conversation turned to the Cubs & Bartman’s boo-boo, where Moises made an admission:“Everywhere I play, even now, people still yell, ‘Bartman! Bartman!’ I feel really bad for the kid,” Alou said, shaking his head.“You know what the funny thing is?” he added a moment later. “ ...
If Bartman Wasn’t Miserable Enough

Steve Bartman is one of the all-time great stories in sports, and like all great stories in sports, they never truly die. Even if this was five years ago come October, The Legend of Bartman continues to live.
Moises Alou, who was running for the foul ball that Bartman caught, admits he never had a chance at it, anyway.
“Everywhere I play, even now, people still yell, ‘Bartman! Bartman!’ I feel really bad for the kid,” Alou told Associated Press columnist Jim Litke.

... Moises Alou is either a liar, or a really mean guy. Five years later he reveals that he wouldn’t have caught the Steve Bartman ball!? Is he you serious? He couldn’t have said that right after the game? Or the week after? Or the year after? Or three years after? Alou clearly doesn’t understand how the normal psychology of human emotion and forgiveness works. ...

... Five years later, Moises Alou has finally admitted that there was no way he would have caught that ball. Really, dude? It must have taken so much for you to come forward. Saying that earlier might have saved Bartman from the death threats and pariah status he still carries instead of saying that you hoped he didn't regret it the rest of his life. Shit, Salman Rushdie comes out in public and he has a fatwa against him. When was the last time anyone saw Bartman? He's become the chupacabra of Chicago. ...
Alou on Bartman

Moises Alou has a confession to make: Alou, now with the Mets, said he wouldn't have caught the now-infamous pop foul in the 2003 National League Championship Series that hit the heel of Bartman's hand in the eighth inning of Game 6, prolonging an inning in which the Marlins later rallied for the lead . . . "Everywhere I play, even now, people still yell, 'Bartman! Bartman!' I feel really bad for the kid," Alou told Associated Press columnist Jim Litke. "You know what the funny thing is?" he added a moment later. "I wouldn't have caught it, anyway." ...
Alou wouldn’t have caught it anyway

... in stark contrast to Alou’s reaction at the time. After the play, he jumped up and down with his arms outstretched.
After the game, he said: "I timed it perfectly, I jumped perfectly. I’m almost 100 percent that I had a clean shot to catch the ball. All of a sudden, there’s a hand on my glove."
He didn’t have kind words for Bartman on that night either.
I mean, what is Alou supposed to say today?

... games, sitting along the first base line, and even in the first inning of a game in April, I am moving out of the way so my first baseman can have a clear shot of it. Granted, I have a bigger mental capacity and more quick reasoning skills than your average Bartman, but it isn’t that hard to try and avoid a live play.
I guess the years of heckling are really getting to him. Either way, I don’t really give a shit, because the Fish got the ring.

... get over it quick. As for the play itself, the ball wasn't all that close to Soto and it wouldn't have taken any effort by Weeks to go around him. I'm frankly shocked that the Cubs didn't retaliate later in the game. On the other hand, we needed the win pretty badly and maybe it's best to save that for down the road.
This Fukudome character is pretty good.
