As you may have heard by now, things got a tad messy at the Columbus Crew-New England Revolution match. Some overzealous Crew fans, and some folks attending the game who don't deserve the label of fans, decided it was a good idea to through foreign objects ranging from water bottles to a lit flare, at Revs players. As much as I wish that was the extent of the ugliness, it wasn't. One game ... [link]

... that was acceptable behavior at a soccer game. Gee, where would he have gotten that idea? Of course, the coup de grace is that this same fan shouts that one of the Revs should be sent off for reacting to that taunt -- while other fans are throwing water bottles at the player in question. ... find bizarre about all this is that if someone threw a flare onto an MLB field, an NFL field, or an NBA court, they'd be pinned against the ground with a billy club stuck into their groin in about 3 seconds. Yet at soccer games, no one does anything. That better change soon if the U.S. wants to prevent soccer hooliganism from continuing to spread here.
