Yankees and Sox Fighting For Santana

Who Is the Third Piece In a Johan Santana Trade To The Yankees?
Published 12/2/2007 at FakeTeams
With Johan Santana one 2nd-tier prospect away from becoming a New York Yankees, Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus has his Top 11 New York Yankees Prospects up.  At the top of the list is the one untouchable followed by the five players Jack Curry of the New York Times reported as unavailable from inclusion as the third piece. After those six, Edwar Ramirez is the only one ready to earn the major league minimum salary.  I am not convinced SS Albert Gonzalez can hit enough to get the deal done, and I wonder how far away reliever Kevin Whelan was for Mr. Goldstein.  He is the prospect sleeper I am ...

Andy's back, and Hank's strong words (are awesome)
Published 12/3/2007 by Dave & Aziz Nekoukar at NJ.com: Pride of the Yankees
We all certainly awoke to good news in Yankeeland, eh? Andy Pettitte is coming back for the 2008 season , making it just that much more likely that Mike Mussina won't have a starting job for the upcoming season. Sweet. This almost goes without saying, but it was really quite nice of Andy to let the team know about his plan before the Winter Meetings, because it gives Cashman a much better picture of his '08 starting rotation. And meanwhile: oh, Hank Steinbrenner, how we have quickly come to love and loathe your banter . While Hank does talk a little too much -- and of course by "little," we mean a lot -- we love what he had to ...

Dreaming on Cashman
Published 1/8/2008 by dajafi <info@thegoodphight.com> at The Good Phight: Front Page Posts
News flash: there ain't too much happening with the Phillies right now. The team avoided arbitration with Jayson Werth on Monday, signing the outfielder to a $1.7 million contract with performance bonuses for 2008. And they evidently signed two guys named Cory Willey (lefty pitcher) and Angel Negron (first baseman), according to Baseball America by way of Beerleaguer. Otherwise, Pat Gillick seems deep into his winter nap. Given that it's probably his last one, though, it isn't too soon to think about who the next Phillies general manager might be. Our unhappy hypothesis is that Ruben Amaro, Jr., the assistant GM who's proven much ...

Non-Roster Invitee #10: Alan Horne, RHP
Published 1/29/2008 by Jason at MY BASEBALL BIAS
With pitchers and catchers reporting to Tampa in 16 more days, I thought we’d take a daily look at all 26 non-roster invitees in alphabetical order. If all goes according to plan, we’ll wrap up this series on February 13th with infielder Marcos Vechionacci, one day before Yankee camp officially opens. One word of caution - I do not claim to be a scout. Most of my sourcing will come from various interviews, profiles, videos and looking at statistics. The series is meant to be a learning tool as we prep for the opening of Spring Training. I invite all of you to add to the discussion in the comments section, post links on said player or, if ...

Trade Reflection Part One - The Anticipatory Set
Published 6/12/2008 by Brandon Heikoop (noreply@blogger.com) at The Outsiders Look at the Insides of Baseball
Sometimes I wonder how a General Manager loses his job. Clearly there are times which warrant such a move, but rarely does a General Manager come in, clean house, start all over and build a contender while going without error. I think of the praise General Manager Mark Shapiro receives and then the duds he has brought in to 'fill holes'. This is not a knock on Mark, he is strapped for cash and typically stays within a plan, but that does not mean the flops that he brings in are without recognition. ...
