Once upon a time, in a remote Himalayan theocracy, an old ruler once wise and powerful had spiraled into grave illness. His decisions were proving odder and odder, and the people, mostly poor farmers who scratched out sustenance from the thin air and rocky soil, were perplexed. How could this be? He is, after all, divinely embodied, half-human half-deity, like all our rulers before him, a descendant from the loins of the Great Ox-in-the-Sky that shines at night upon our kingdom in the brief but beneficent summer months. They dared not speak ill of their ruler. They could only look at each other and wait.

Anyone who has read this blog probably knows my opinion on these prospect lists: I don’t like them. Well, that’s not 100% accurate. I think the discussion that comes out of them is certainly valuable and some “prospect expert” ranking prospects is certainly better than picking names out of a hat. However, it’s the way they’re presented that always gets me … like without recognition that they’re going to be off on tons of guys. Just like you have to know the limitations of statistics, you have to know the limitations of scouting (or scouting and statistics, if you prefer). Anyway, that doesn’t ...

Neither is really the pinnacle of this field (that honor is reserved for Baseball America) and Law is considerably less respected and knowledgeable on the subject than Goldstein, which shows up quite a bit in his list. The Value of Johan Santana?
Published 2/2/2008 by The Baseball Analysts Staff at Baseball Analysts
I know, I know. Santana had just a year remaining before unrestricted free agency and demanded an extension in order to sign off on any deal. That matters, so I do not want to make this come off as an apples to apples comparison.
With that out of the way, let me now comment on something that I think is just astounding. The Twins may have yielded less for Santana than any of the other high profile deals involving youngsters/prospects this off-season. It is possible that, with only part of a season played above A ball, he’ll struggle. Last year, Alex Gordon was similarly hyped, but, without experience above AA, had trouble adjusting. I’m not saying that Bruce doesn’t have .300/ 30/ 100 potential- even for 2008- but it would be foolish to expect it from him. I’d rather miss out on Bruce and have someone else overbid than ...

The other side of the Santana trade by Victor Wang February 11, 2008 In my previous article , I analyzed the Johan Santana trade. I did this by comparing the historical value of the types of prospects the Twins received to the projected value of Santana. I concluded that the Twins were not ripped off like others have claimed. However, I did conclude that the Mets were slight winners based on a couple of factors. One of these factors was that the Twins were not able to accept the best offer, though this may make the Twins losers more than it makes the Mets winners. As we entered the ninth inning in today's game, it looked like we could be in for a repeat of yesterday's "kiss your sister" tie, with the scores level at four runs apiece. However, Dustin Nippert refused to let that happen, allowing the Chicago White Sox to score three runs in the ninth, to leave the team still looking for their first victory of 2008. Nippert wasn't actually the worst pitching line of the day; that dubious honor goes to Billy Buckner, who allowed six hits and a walk in his two innings, and four earned runs, a pair in each frame. Insert obvious comment here, probably something like not knowing how many of those hits went through ...
