Cards projected to pick 19th in the 2009 draft
Future Redbirds —
... While I’m glad the Cardinals put together a nice little win streak to end the season with their heads up high, it could have cost them in the draft. Right now they project to pick 19th in the draft, putting them past the cut off point of having a protected first round pick. That means if they sign a type A free agent they will forfeit their first round pick. With extra money to spend this offseason, that is entirely possible. ...

... NL teams– it comes down to whether they’re willing to suffer through his defensive woes.
*Depends on whether or not Seattle signs Josh Fields. If they don’t, Seattle gets the 22nd pick. If they do, every team after 22 gets bumped up.
Of the “good teams,” I think the Rays, Mets and Blue Jays are the best bets to sign Raul at this point. This will be something to keep an eye on this offseason.

Not an ideal situation for Oliver, as his status will act as a deterrent to other teams if the Angels offer him arbitration and he declines. The Angels could also get the #25 pick next year if the Mets sign K-Rod. The Mets lost the #18 pick in '06 after signing Billy Wagner, and the Phils used it on ...

He has experience in every role in the pen, including as a closer and pitches from the wrong side of his body. These are all significant feathers in his cap. Nevertheless, he is now 33 years old and will likely receive a 3 year contract between $8-10 M per year. He’s also a type-A free agent, meaning signing him would cost us our 1st round draft pick – the 19th overall. Anybody think we ought to trade our #1 draft pick for a 33 year old lefty ...
