Braves Top 20-John Sickels
Published 11/16/2007 by themurph <info@talkingchop.com> at Talking Chop
[editor's note, by gondeee] - I promoted this from the diary so it doesn't trump the trade news. Damn! There's a lot of news today. John Sickels top-20 list is out. I've never seen this many B's in one of his lists. 11! Cody Johnson at 20? ...
JJ on Sickels list
Published 11/17/2007 by admin at Jair Jurrjens - Braves Prospect
John Sickels wrote up his “extremely preliminary” rankings of the Atlanta Braves prospects. He had the lowest rating of Jair Jurrjens that I’ve seen so far with him slotted at 8th and rated as a B. Sickels noted that he was worried about Jurrjens health, which is a fair statement given his late season neck & shoulder problems the last 2 years.

Nobody knows what Ascanio will do for the Cubs in 2008 as of yet. He’s likely to head to AAA Iowa, but he’s the kind of reliever that Lou loves to have around. Overpowering, electric stuff.
For what it’s worth, CHONE projected Ascanio to post a 4.50 ERA in the big leagues in 2008.

Braves get Ohman, Infante from Cubs
Published 12/4/2007 by Adam J. Morris <info@lonestarball.com> at Lone Star Ball
The Braves and Cubs have made a minor deal, with reliever Will Ohman and utilityman Omar Infante going to the Atlanta Braves for minor league relievers Jose Ascencio. Infante had just come over from the Tigers in the Jacque Jones deal, and is a pretty decent utility guy, while Ohman is apparently to replace Ron Mahay in the lefty-out-of-the-pen role. Ascencio got a C+ from John Sickels, is 22 years old and threw hard, and well, in AA last year.
Catfish Stew: Blowing Up The A's, Part 3: Kotsay to Atlanta?
Published 1/10/2008 at Baseball Toaster
David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says he has spoken with Mark Kotsay , who was told by Billy Beane that the A's are working on a deal that would send Kotsay to the Braves for a mid-level prospect. The A's would probably pay at least $5M of the $8M owed to Kotsay this year. If the Braves find Kotsay's MRI acceptable, the deal could be announced Monday. This deal is probably going down now because the Braves other good CF option, free agent Mike Cameron, just signed with the Brewers. It's a good fit for both teams: the Braves need a stopgap centerfielder until Jordan Schafer is ready for the big leagues, and the A's ...

... almost 30 years later. I don't think I've ever felt so old and out of shape in my life... Many thanks to zywica for filling in while I was gone...and if you haven't already, make sure you check out his piece last night on the Rangers' pitching situation, which I think is about as good a breakdown of where the staff stands as you'll see... I see the A's continued their teardown. The Kotsay trade is interesting...and I'm not sure what to think about the return. Joey Devine got a grade B from John Sickels, who had him as the #5 prospect in the Braves system, but he didn't ...
Catfish Stew: Mark Kotsay Is Officially A Brave; Catfish Stew Is Officially Giddy
Published 1/14/2008 at Baseball Toaster
Mark Kotsay passed his physical, and...wow. The A's got not only one, but two of the Braves' top 20 prospects in exchange for Mark Kotsay. As discussed before , the A's get hard-throwing reliever Joey Devine, who John Sickels lists as the Braves' #5 prospect, plus--bonus!--Jamie Richmond, the Braves' #13 prospect. Neither prospect is without their flaws. Devine was rushed to the majors too young, where he promptly gave up some devastating home runs. He was the first pitcher in MLB history to give up grand slams in his first two games, and he also gave up an 18th-inning home run to Chris Burke in the 2006 NLDS, which ended ...

... John Sickels has Richmond listed as the Braves #13 prospect in 2008 with a C+ grade, a downgrade from 2007 when Sickels rated him a B and the number 8 prospect in the system. Richmond was the Appalachian pitcher of the year in 2006 and was a Baseball America Rookie All-Star. ...
The Pitchers We Gave Up for Kotsay
Published 1/16/2008 by gondeee <info@talkingchop.com> at Talking Chop
I'm fairly certain this will be the penultimate thing I will write about the Kotsay trade (it may even be the ultimate). We have been discussing it ad nauseam for several days now and I'm sure it's beginning to wear on some folks, but I wanted to take a closer look at the two pitchers we gave up, and see if their hype (perhaps their hype was only in my mind) was on par with what the experts say about them. ...

From last year's prospect list # 7 1B Thorman, #8 LHP Jo-Jo Reyes and #10 INF Yunel Escobar all graduated to the major league team. The only player left from last years #3 Brandon Jones the rest have either made the majors, been traded or dropped off the list. The Braves prospect list looks much thinner this year, their best prospects are three B+ outfielders. ...

Jeff Locke Q&A

Jeff Locke, who was a big part of Appalachian League Champion Danville Braves this past season, was kind enough to answer a few questions for Chop-n-Change. For those of you who don’t know, Locke is a left-handed pitcher who the Braves took in the second round (51st overall) of the 2006 draft. He was recently rated the eleventh best Atlanta prospect by Baseball Prospectus and John Sickels, and the eighth best by Baseball America. Without further adieu, here is the Jeff Locke Q&A.
