Spring Training - Week 1

... A little early last week, a little late this one: hey, sue me… Nice to get a week of Spring Training under our belts, and had a great time down at Tucson last Friday. You can find a full report of that trip here, but let’s just say that the sunburn has just about healed now… The Diamondbacks season has started brightly enough, winning six of the ten games played since the season started [a couple of days saw split-squad games]. Obviously, that isn’t significant yet, but the highlight was probably the 9-0 defeat of the Giants - whom it’s always a pleasure to beat, even in meaningless contests like these!

Thus spake the great philosopher John Lennon, and as we sit on the final day of 2007, it seems an appropriate time to look back and see where we are. The obvious answer to that is: National League West champions, something which seemed like a possible, but perhaps unlikely outcome, twelve months ago. Or even less than that, given that a week after the All-Star break, I was asking a poll question, 'Is Arizona's season over?' Still, hindsight is 20/20, and I think we can look back and say that the year just passed was our best, probably since the World ...

The Diamondbacks emphatically ended a streak going back almost five months, to the final game of the NLDS, getting their first victory in eight attempts, by crushing the Chicago White Sox in a split-squad game at Tucson Electric Park this afternoon, 12-5, in front of 7,361. A little later, the other half of the roster also beat the White Sox, rallying from a 5-0 deficit down in Hermosillo, Mexico, before a crowd of 12,855.
