THEY HAVE SLITHERED through cyberspace like those seed pods from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." They have aligned themselves into three distinct groups: The "Tell Him to Try This" hitting coaches. The "Get Rid of the Bum" bashers. The "Just Leave Him Alone - He'll Be Fine" partisans. Everybody has an opinion on Ryan Howard's third annual - and by far scariest - spring slump. The bashers ... Conlin: Suddenly there are more experts than strikeouts in Ryan Howard’s slump (RR) The Sweet Science of the Swing Era with Coach Conlin. Most of these former line-drive machines correctly state that Howard stands too far off the plate with a stance that is much too open. For the record, he is setting up in just about the same stance he brought to the majors in 2005, when he was rookie of the year. The difference, of course, is what he does with the stance once it unfurls into the various components of a swing. Charlie Manuel has explained it in a peanut shell. Howard is ...

When It Comes To Howard’s Slump, Everyone Has An Opinion (Including Me)
Published 5/14/2008 by Brian Joseph at Seamheads.com
... Usually, I post on Saturday and I asked Mike if there was room for a second post by me this week.  He suggested Wednesday or Thursday which is why the post is up today.  Ironically, Philadelphia Daily News columnist Bill Conlin wrote a column on the obsession with Howard’s slump.  In his article, Conlin divided us (I guess I’m one of them now, too) into “bashers”, “coaches” and “partisans”.  While I played baseball through my teenage years, I wouldn’t know any advice to give him.  The last thing I want is for the Phillies to trade him because I’m not one to think that Burrell or ...

The Ryan Report, #04

We noted in last week's report that his AVG/OBP/SLG line was a paltry .167/.294/.351, but it is now .171/.280/.357. His strikeout rate has improved by a sliver.

Fear and Loathinig in Pittsburgh

When popular submarine-sidearm Pirate pitcher Kent Tekulve was traded to the Phillies in April of 1985, many of Pittsburgh's faithful were up-in-arms that their ridiculous looking starter/mascot was so easily disposed of. In an effort to placate the growing hostility at Three Rivers, Pittsburgh brass thought they could simply find another player to wear prescription Blue Blocker aviator glasses.

Brandon Webb: Pay This Man Right Now

This isn't the first time I've talked up Brandon Webb. Avid fans (hey, Mom!) will remember that I juxtaposed my main man Barry Zito with Mr. Webb awhile back. I said then it's quite hilarious that Zito makes more than Webb. Well, Webb is about to cash in (and still make less than Zito). His agent is negotiating an extension with the Diamondbacks right now. If he keeps throwing like he did ...

When It Comes To Howard’s Slump, Everyone Has An Opinion (Including Me)

On the heels of a night where he went 2-for-4 maybe there’s hope that Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is finally snapping out of his ’08 slump. Then again, he did add to his strikeout total twice to boost it to a major league-high 56 times. Other than surviving Jimmy Rollins’ trip to the disabled list with a winning record, the hottest topic amongst Phillies’ fans is the horrendous slump that ...
