john_nyc Just messed up. They sign an awful player to an awful contract and want other teams to bail them out? If I am Miles I sue the league for trynig to prevent him from earning a living. if he feels he can still play at 27 years old after that injury who are the Blazers to say no? -
kellex I'm a huge Blazers fan and I also think this statement is absurd. Not really a smart move in my opinion, it's like tempting the entire league to sign him just to say "f-off Portland".
And like NYC just said, they are basically telling Darius Miles that they don't feel he should be able to make a living. Although that's sort of sickening to say seeing as he's still making $18 mill.
-
ticketstumbler Blazers are acting like bitches.
Protip: don't sign crap players to awful contracts then try to blame everyone else.
-
kellex What you aren't understanding is that this front office didn't sign Miles to this contract, the previous sucker-faced front office did.
These would be the intelligent replacements that realized from day 1 that he was a cancer.
-
-
EthanJaynes I should have sent the Blazers one of these before they signed him. -
torridjoe very smart move by Miller. When GMs start anonymously dropping doo doo in the nat'l media by suggesting that a team violate the terms of a joint venture and act to screw another team's cap and competitiveness while enhancing their own, it's time to lay out a warning.
Note that the email does not say other teams should not sign Darius--it says they shall not do so for the purpose of hurting Portland and gaining for themselves.
This is a warning that a team thinking of doing that would expose themselves to an expensive--and likely winning--lawsuit.
But the best thing for the NBA to do would be to lift the cap penalty on Portland, which acted in good faith on the union-paid doctor's assessment of Miles, that he had a career ending injury. The rule is there to prevent teams from re-signing a retiree at a smaller cap number. If they cut him with the faith that he was done, and he suddenly signs and plays regularly with another team, then why should the Blazers have to allow him to be paid twice?
-
BustaBucket Torrid, well said, I agree with you so I will say no more.-
kellex Even though the statement says don't sign him simply to hurt Portland, it still implies that they would love it if Darius never plays in this league again.
If it said something along the lines of "dont sign him to hurt us, but if you want to sign him because you'll use him as an asset, then good for both of you!"
Of course, if they said that, this sh!t wouldn't be so much fun!
-
-
kellex Because the NBA sucks. -
daddycane what's the difference? Or in other words 'how would you prove intent to hurt portland'?
Any team that signed and kept him could be accused of 'intent' to hurt portland....it's irrational either way.
-
kellex It's a shotty move by Portland. But it was also meant to be behind close doors...err email accounts. But they would also be stupid not think it would get leaked.

All in all, league executives have been rooting hard for Miles to play those 10 games after he missed two years with a knee injury that Portland and league doctors declared was career-ending.
