How old is Alexei Ramirez?
Published 9/19/2007 by The Cheat <info@southsidesox.com> at South Side Sox: Front Page Posts
Does it matter? Even if you add three years to each of his reported birthdays -- Yes, he's got two of them -- he'll still be younger than any of the other free agents available this spring. His age shouldn't change any team's scouting report or view of his major league viability. ...
Alexei Ramirez
Published 9/19/2007 by Brian Oliver at Nationals Farm Authority
Baseball America noted that MI/CF Alexei Ramirez, a Cuban defector who played in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, has selected Jamie Torres as his agent and is ready to come to MLB. Ramirez is reportedly 26-years old and has played CF for the Cuban National team in the WBC, SS for Pinar Del Rio in the Cuban National League, and also at 2B for the Cuban national team. From what I can find, he seems to most resemble Julio Lugo in terms of projected abilities. If he can play center field, he seems to be an intriguing option for the Nationals this off-season. His salary demands would not seem to be at the level of the top tier CFs on the market (Andruw Jones, Torii Hunter, Aaron Rowand) but it definitely would be a risk on whether he would provide a solid return. ... would be a good "low cost" option in center field for the Braves. Today I'm turning my attention to a higher cost option, but still not a bank buster like Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand (or Andruw Jones). The youngest potential free agent center fielder is a 26 year old Cuban defector named Alexei Ramirez. Baseball America had this to say about him last month: ...

... on ESPN.com. Baseball America also had the report on his possible availability , and in that article it mentions how he plays shortstop locally, outfield and second base internationally. Talk about getting creative to fill a hole. This certainly would be — and the Cardinals have said that they are looking into the Asian leagues for pitchers and across the globe for contributors. Not sure a team is ready to hand over a key spot like shortstop to Ramirez, but take a look at his swing for yourself: ...
Taking a look at Alexei Ramirez

... until recently. Alexei is a 26 year old second baseman in the Cuban league, although most scouts agree that he may be best suited to play shortstop or center field. Per Baseball America, Ramirez hit .335 with a .574 slugging percentage for Pinar Del Rio while leading the league in home runs with 20. He is currently trying to become a Dominican Republic citizen, as his wife already is, and this would allow Alexei to go through the U.S. government "unblocking" process, making him a free agent. Judging by the time the articles were released, it will be around the December GM ...

You read that correctly. 4 years, $36 M for David Eckstein. It's been great knowing you, David. You're a little sparkplug - plucky and spunky and all those things that fans like. Thanks for the World Series title! We'll remember you fondly. How we'll replace him, I don't know. God help us if it's Cesar Izturis! This Alexei Ramirez intrigues me a little.
