Ken Rosenthal reports that the Blue Jays are nearing a long-term extension for right fielder Alex Rios. The six-year deal would cover two arb years and four of free agency, starting with the '09 season. The amount would be around $65MM, apparently with a 2015 option for about $15MM. The Vernon Wells-Rios outfield tandem would be together ...

Rosenthal: Blue Jays close to locking up OF Rios Robonomics at work… Just over a year ago, the Blue Jays signed center fielder Vernon Wells through 2014. Now, they are on the verge of locking up right fielder Alex Rios for at least that long — and possibly longer. Rios, 27, is close to signing a six-year contract extension, according to major-league sources. The deal, expected to be in the $65 million range, will include an option for 2015 that could push the total value closer to $80 million. Play Fantasy Baseball! The contract will cover Rios’ remaining two arbitration ...
Rios Deal Nearly Complete
Published 3/25/2008 by Stoeten at Drunk Jays Fans
After a several days of bad news out of Jays camp, JP Ricciardi has evidently decided that enough is enough, and will soon make with some good news by announcing that he's finally signed Alex Rios to a long term deal. Now, I know I probably talk a little too much about the fucking hysterical fans who like to go shit ape (or, as Bob McCown would say, on radio at least, "ape goof") over every little goddamn thing-- such as the Jays not having signed Rios long-term as of about three minutes ago-- but I think I'm completely justified in thinking thank fuck this is done and can shut some of those morons up. No? This deal was pretty much always going to ...

Blue Jays To Extend Rios
Published 3/25/2008 by Eli at MLB Rumors
... According to FOXSports.com, the Blue Jays and Alex Rios are closing in on a six year extension worth about 65 million dollars. The deal, which will begin in 2009, will cover his first four years of free agency. The Blue Jays are known for giving their players opt-out clauses in their contracts, along with a no-trade clause, and I expect them to do that with Rios. This is a solid deal for the Blue Jays, mostly because Rios is really coming into form in the MLB. He struggled in his second year, like most hitters, but turned it around in 2006 and made his first All-Star appearance. ...
Jays Close to Extension With Rios

Or so says Ken Rosenthal who has scooped all the local writers.
Looks like 6 years, $65 million with a $15 million option for 2015. The deal apparently kicks in after this season and would cover the 2009-2014 seasons covering Rios' last two arbitration years and 4 years of free agency. He's 27 right now (February birthday) so the deal is for his age 28-33 seasons. Last month I thought that 5 years for $50 million would be fair. This seems to be in that range, but a year longer (and two if it happens to be a player option). It's a year or two longer than I would have liked, and we don't know if Ricciardi gave another player a no-trade or ...

Well the season has started, but of course not yet for our heroic azure corvidae. We will have to wait for Monday, when I will unfortunately be in Tennessee for work and therefore away from my Extra Innings subscription. But I'll be able to listen to the game on the radio, and that's good enough for me. Everyone else gearing up for the start of the regular season? ...
